ANNOUNCING ...

I hope you are all having a fabulous break.  I have enjoyed spending time with my family, working in our yard, and having Santa visit!  I have also been finishing up details and looking towards what is coming in the new year:

The Past:
Announcing the winners of the Funny HaHa completed in class, December 18-
First, the punchline:  "On those days the kids have to play inside."

The Joke:  "Why Is a Mother Kangaroo Unhappy When It Rains?"
 - closest guess, period 1:  "What happens when it rains in Olympia?"
                 *Serina and Vivika
 - closest guess, period 2:  "What happens when it's raining cats and dogs?"
                  *Lily G and Sadie
-And the winners of the funniest haha contest goes to- "On what days does Ilona get a sore throat?"
                  *Alina C and Maisie
All winners will receive one candy point when we return to school.  Congratulations!

The Present:
Remember that completing and bringing in any Quizlet practice test with negative numbers will count as an extra assignment for you.  I also recently posted a new set for adding and subtracting negatives; it's a speed practice set and you can be the first to set the fastest time.  It's great practice and gives you a few extra points in your pocket!

The Future:
Trans Math students - We will be having the computation section of the negative integers test during the second or third week of January.  We will be covering multiplication and division immediately upon return and then using everything within the order of operations.  I will let you know the exact date as soon as possible, but make sure that you are preparing on your own as well!
P.E. students for Wednesday and Friday - do not forget your swimsuits and towels!
Basketball/Volleyball players - it is possible you can still sign up if you have forgotten as practices will not begin until the second week in January.  I am guessing if there are spots, you can nab one.  Information on the season is forthcoming.

I look forward to seeing you all in 2013~
Mo ;-)

Homework for Monday, Dec. 17

Assignment:  Negative Subtraction #2 (differentiated)
You received your homework during 4th period today unless you were not here.  (imagine that!)
Please take your time to solve each equation, rewriting as necessary so that they are all addition problems ... this will help you keep track of your good and bad cowboys.  Trust me.
*There is a subtraction "help" link on the "Mo'Help" page of this blog.  Stuck?  Please use it.
*Max and Kameko - this is your homework
Due Tuesday, before winter break!

Homework for Thursday, Mr. Gacek's Birthday!

     Happy Birthday Mr. Gacek!
Assignment:  Real Life Negatives B
As I told you in class today (and we practiced) there are two parts to each of the problems on this worksheet and the first part is NOT explained on your worksheet.  So, here it is:
Part 1 - You must write an equation for each of the problems 1 - 6.
*This could look like 5 + (-4) + (-13) + 3 = x
*You may solve it by commuting and associating in whatever way makes sense to you, but you MUST show me the original equation as it would be written according to the story.  This skill (making an equation from a scenario) is critical to future problem solving, not to mention right now.
*Mark the equation clearly; if I cannot find it, you will not receive credit for it.
Part 2 - Solve each equation.
*Again, you may solve it by commuting and associating in whatever way makes sense to you.
You do not need to write equations for problems 7 & 8 although I would recommend drawing a picture of some sort.
There is a copy of the worksheet here:  Real Life Negatives B
*Did you get the note that the missing number (when the car reverses for the second time) in #2 is 40? P.S - if you downloaded the worksheet above, I have already inserted the 40 for you.  ;-)

Homework for Wednesday, 12/12/12

Assignment:  Subtracting Negatives
A lot of you had not seen subtraction using negatives before and/or had some of the rules confused with other rules.  My recommendation is consistent:  Turn it into an addition problem and think about the cowboys.  If you would like further re-instruction with this, check the Mo'Help page of this blog for further examples.
*copy of this worksheet
Due Thursday - we will be correcting this in class

No Homework, Tuesday, Dec. 11

I hope you all had a great day and will appreciate that David forgot to give you your homework for tonight.  It sounds like you had a good time practicing in class today; thank you for being so terrific.
I hope to be back tomorrow,
Mo ;-)

Homework for Monday, 12/10

Assignment:  More Adding with Negatives
I decided to make this a bit like a "choice" assignment where you were able to select which level of addition problems you felt prepared to tackle tonight.  Many of you are feeling confident as this is beginning to feel "easy" for you, but some of you also realize that the reason it feels "easy" is because you understand it now.  Yes?
*Some of you may have looked at your assignment and changed your mind after realizing that it looked easier or more difficult than you thought it would.  YOU CAN CHANGE!
*Below you will find copies of the variety of assignments I offered in class today.  If you would like to switch assignments, please do.  Obviously you may not redo one that you already did.  ;-)
 - 1.5 Practice ws
-  Adding Negative Integers (big numbers)
-  Adding Negative Integers (long sequences)
- Adding Negative Decimals
Robyn - I recommend the second or third choice on this list, but it's your choice
One more thing ...  I realize that I probably haven't remembered to tell you that you can always do extra assignments for full credit if you want to.  That means you can select any or all of the above, whether or not they have been assigned to you, and turn them in.  There is no pressure and I certainly don't want you to feel like you need to do extra work, but some of you like the extra practice (like I wish I had practiced juggling a soccer ball more) and that's cool.
*these types of extra assignments can be turned in at any time this trimester
Homework is Due Tuesday

Homework for Thursday, 12/6

Assignment:  Adding Negatives
Today is the first time for many of you that you will be thinking about negative integers in the format of an equation.  Do not let it daunt you!  They are still just yellow and blue cowboys represented as a number in this case.  Who wins?  Who is left at the end of the battle?  Same thing ...
*You received one of several assignments today that was differentiated based on now you did on the pre-quiz.  TRUST ME.  If you missed a bunch on the pre-quiz, in spite of your confidence level you will be assigned practice problems that fit where you are.  HOPEFULLY by today they should look "easy."  You've learned a lot already!
*No copies here, but you can send me an email in hopes that I have an electronic copy for you.
Due Friday

Homework for Wedsnesday, Dec 5

Assignment: Real Life Negatives A
Welcome to the "real" world (as real as it gets in these examples) of negative integers.  Today you are to focus on what you are doing not how you write it.
*Note - I did not give you the answer to #1, so your task is to find it in any way you want to - ask around, Google it, whatever works for you!  The bottom line is, you need to have the answer and it needs to be correct. ;-)
Mo's advice:
*First commute!  Drive those numbers around until they find where they ...
*Associate!  Remember that these numbers only want to associate (or hang with) numbers with the same "value."  They're not all that friendly, eh?  So if you go down the steps at Hogwarts, all of those downward steps are collected in one place and all of the times you go up are collected in the other.  Make it simple.
*The rest of it is up to you.  Figure out how to decide whether you have a profit or loss, whether you end up above ground or below ground, etc.  Think about how you know that then figure out how to get to that answer.  If you're stuck, remember the cowboys:  who wins?  How did you decide that?  Same thing, now the numbers are bigger and there are more of them.
*Yes, I do have a copy of this assignment and here it is!
Due Thursday

Homework for Tuesday, Dec 4

         "Who are those guys???"
*meet the bad cowboys and the  good cowboys.
          (in honor of Patrick)

Assignment:  Commutative and Associative Properties with Negatives ws
*Keep it SIMPLE!!!!
*Today we focused on how it works, NOT what an equation looks like.  We never want to forget the "rules" again, eh?
*Follow the homework directions precisely:
Step 1) commute only;
Step 2) total positive and total negative;
Step 3) Answer.  Make sure to indicate whether it is positive or negative (blue or yellow cowboys?)
*For #5 Mavis, write the steps out yourself.
Due: Wednesday

Homework #1: Monday, December 3

Welcome to the winter trimester!  This is where your math homework begins ...

Homework:  3 - Definitions & Examples
In this assignment you are to interview three different people regarding negative numbers.  Be sure your interviewee knows what a negative number is before you begin.
Write in detail!
*Only one person may be a current NOVA student and it may not be another 6th grader at NOVA.  Note that it is not required that you have a NOVA student.
*You may conduct your interview over the phone; there is no excuse not to be able to find three different people.
*Write in the name (and relationship) of each person to you.
*Definitions should be written in as much detail as the person gives you.  Do not worry about accuracy at this time; your interviewee might be rusty. ;-)
*Examples:  your three examples (one per person) must all be different.  I would word the second question something like this - "I need you to give me a real life example, other than 'in math class,' where you would need to represent something as a negative number?"  Push them on this a bit, okay?  They can do it!

Starting Winter Trimster

Hello all of you beautiful people!
Your schedules have all been entered into TeacherEase, so you can go there now and have a preview of what you can look forward to this winter trimester.  Thank you all for your patience; it is a lot of data entry even though I have had it all "scheduled" for several weeks.  Enjoy!
*Do not forget to wear tennis shoes for your P.E. class.
*We will all be playing tennis this month, so bring your own racket IF you have one you prefer.

*Retests for the Decimal Application test will be taken in Gruel this week and this week only.
See you all Monday!
Mo ;-)

Decimal Application Test results

Seriously, overall you did well on the test today!  Kyle still has a few of you flustered, but no one let him completely overwhelm you.
There were SIX 100%!  Is one of them you?!?!  To find out, go to TeacherEase.
So now, here's how we are wrapping up this fall trimester:
*In class tomorrow we will be going over the test, making test corrections, and deciding if you want to retest the application section.
- how to decide?  Check to see TONIGHT how this test score has impacted your grade and whether or not that bothers you.  If you are happy, let it rest and move on.  Kyle will let you go ... for now. ;-)
- If you choose to retest we will do so next week.  Depending on how many people want to retest, it will either occur in class or in Gruel.  This WILL still apply to your fall trimester grade.
*Thursday, November 28 is the absolute LAST day that I will take any late or redone papers.  If you have really old papers they do not apply to this deadline as THAT deadline was Friday, November 16 (check out the sidebar I have on this blog for "upcoming dates.")  So we're talking about the Kyle and Mavis papers we have done since then.  Thanks!
P.S. This last deadline does not apply to Kameko, Claire, or Emily who missed most of the days this past week.  Their Kyle/Mavis deadline is Tuesday, December 4.
NO HOMEWORK in math tonight.  Study for your Spanish and Language Arts!
Best to you all (try to sleep well),
Mo ;-)

Homework for Tuesday, November 27

Assignment: Student Choice
You were to choose an assignment today that you felt would help prepare you for the application test tomorrow.  Accuracy is important!
Here were your choices:
Hard copy of worksheet with more Kyle and Mavis
***please note that the answer to #9 is a typo!  It should read 8.09 NOT 8.90.  I apologize for all of you for whom this has caused great stress.  :(
Hard copy of Verbal Expressions (not on the test, but an option for the confident!)
Quizlet - print out the test after you have completed it; please un-select the true/false option.
*you may choose either the Decimal Applications or the Verbal Expressions option.
This is a credit/no credit assignment.  Turn in your corrected assignment at the beginning of class this Wednesday for full credit.

Monday, November 26, 2012

Homework:  More with Mavis ws
Today you will meet Mavis who owns a muffin shop.  Although this worksheet is called, "More with Mavis," this is indeed the first time you have met her.  You will see lots of her though!
*There is a copy of this assignment HERE.
*Practice your applications carefully.  Make sure that you understand the question and organize your work accordingly.  Your arithmetic must be accurate.
*The Mavis and Kyle questions are all examples of what could appear on the application section of the test this Wednesday.  Get comfortable with the ins and outs of the vocabulary and how to separate the information you need from the information that you do not need.  If you do, the test WILL be easy!
*Remember that there are more decimal application problems on Quizlet.  Practice will help you move through these types of problems more quickly.  Trust me.

Thanksgiving Math?

Assignment:  Job Crisis B
Kyle is back to give you more experience with applications involving decimals and his inability to keep one job.
*Points: do you know what to do (which operations and when) and are you accurate with your decimals?
*You had the opportunity to do most of this in class today, so if you did not finish you shouldn't have much to worry about this break.  DO take your time though.  ;-)
*On Monday you will get the Job Crisis C.  If you turned in B today, you will get it back and be able to look over your mistakes (or lack thereof) before Wednesday's test.  If you turn it in on Monday, I will get it back to you on Tuesday.
*Study Kyle on Quizlet if you get the chance, eh?  It's worth it.  Kyle WILL be on the application test Wednesday, so you want to master him.
*For those of you absent today for whatever reason, HERE is the copy of this Kyle assignment.
Due Monday

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!!
Mo ;-)

Assignment for Monday, 11/19

Work in progress:  5-number summary, central tendencies, and box plot of your airplane
*Ideally you completed 95% of this in class!
*You may use a calculator to double-check your medians and determine the mean.
  - Once you have gotten an answer twice you may assume it is correct.
*Go to the Mo'Help page if you cannot remember how to complete your summary or draw your box plot.
*Box plots should have a scale of 1 box = 0.25m or 25 cm; this should be included somewhere on your graph.
*Your zero value should be at the bottom of your graph with 13m as the top value.
*Please label every meter on your graph.
This is NOT due tomorrow; your priorities should be your geography map, Golden Compass reading, and project for Mr. Kehoe.  You WILL want to be caught up, but don't sweat it tonight; you will NOT be handing this in at this time.

Weekend Update: 11/17

First of all, congratulations to the NOVA basketball team on their victory today!  Great teamwork from everyone.  Sign-ups will be soon (believe it or not) for the Winter season.  I'm hoping to have volleyball AND basketball teams; I will be making an announcement at this Monday's assembly and have a sign-up information tab on this blog by then too.

Next week we will be working on decimal applications and our paper airplane project.  You can begin practicing (lots of Kyle) on Quizlet if you haven't yet.  The decimal application test will be on Wednesday, November 28.

It's a short week, but we will be busy so don't fall behind.  There will only be 4 days left after Thanksgiving to redo the new assignments!  Check the no-name board for any missing assignments.

Due Monday:  Test Corrections with parent signature for one candy point!

Thursday, November 15, 2012

Homework? 11/15

Nope!
Focus on your other homework tonight, but don't forget to complete any math papers you would like to redo or have not turned in yet.  It's almost the end of the trimester (already?!?!) and you want your grade to best represent your learning for this fall trimester.
*Your tests have been graded and recorded in TeacherEase, so check yours out!  FANTASTIC job overall.  I am super impressed with how quickly and accurately you all picked up the skills you had either forgotten or had not even previously learned.
*Retests will be the last week of the trimester, November 26 - 29.
You may choose to retest part 1 (computation only), part 2 (order of operations with decimals only), or both.  You may take them on separate days also, but plan ahead so you do not run out of days in the week!
*The applications section of the test will be that week also; date to be announced.
Test Corrections tomorrow, due Monday.

Homework for Weds, 11/14

Assignment:  Pre-Test Student Choice
Students had a lot of options to choose from today.  Hopefully, you chose one that will help you feel well-prepared for the test tomorrow.
Remember:
*CORRECT your mistakes.  Learn from them!
*Quizlet is an option, but be sure to print out your page and turn it in.
*This is a credit/no credit assignment.  You are graded on completing it, on time, and turning it in.
*Late papers (not turned in tomorrow) will receive 1/2 credit.
Note: If you do not have a worksheet and do not want to do Quizlet, you will need to send me an email pronto and I will help!
Due Thursday

Homework for Tuesday, 11/13

Assignment:  Mixed Practice ws
Well, this is it.  These are the skills you will need to master for the test on Thursday.  If you can do this page easily, you're ready to rumble!
*There is a copy of the assignment HERE.  We will correct it in class tomorrow so you can better choose your homework for Wednesday night, so be sure to have it completed by class time.
*Note: there will also be problems involving the order of operations, so review those if you need to.
*Note: there will not be any application (story) problems on this test; we will take that section of the test during the week after Thanksgiving.
Due in class Tuesday

Saturday, November 10, 2012

Advice for the week, from Mo ;-)

We will be taking the decimal unit test on Thursday of this coming week and a lot of you could use the extra practice.  Like juggling a soccer ball or dribbling a basketball, the more practice you have the more comfortable you are with the basic skills.  Think about this: you want to be comfortable and confident when faced with the inherent stresses of a testing situation.

If you haven't been there already, go to Quizlet ... now.  On my page you will find decimal practice with multiplication, division, a review (all operations), and applications.

Next week you will have a limited time to practice and get feedback for how you are doing, but Quizlet will give you that immediate feedback as you work through the problems.  These sets are at the level you will be expected to know by test time, so you should know going into the test how prepared you are.

Enjoy the extra long weekend, but keep thinking about your math!
(sounds fun, huh?)
Mo ;-)

Homework for Thursday, Nov 8

Homework: Decimal Division, whatever you asked for
Today we reviewed long division and then moved into division with decimals.  We also admitted -
*it is important that your answer makes sense.
*it is important to line up your work in long division in order to keep the place values straight.  Graph paper can help.
*150 divided by 3 is not the same as 15 divided by 3 which is not the same as 1.5 divided by 3 ... yet they are all related.  How do you know where to put the decimal?
*still confused?  Check my link!
Due Friday

Homework for Wednesday, Nov 7

Assignment:  Decimals Mult. #2
You received an assignment today that was catered to you, so I don't have options here to download.  Pick up an extra copy tomorrow if you need one.
*I will remind you to be more careful of everything today: arithmetic, zeros, and counting your decimal places.  As we discussed in class, paying hundreds of dollars extra for 12 pounds of chocolate is NOT okay!  Everything DOES matter.
*Be thinking also about how you can best prepare yourself for the decimal test.  Practicing does help and I have several options on Quizlet already.  Check it out now rather than waiting until the last minute, okay?
Assignment Due Thursday

Homework for Tuesday, 11/6

Assignment: Lesson 1.5 - Applications: Adding, Subtracting, Multiplying Decimals
*This is all about money, so round to the nearest cent (hundredth) after you have completed the arithmetic.
*Be sure to show your work so I can check how you set up your problems, operations choices, rounding, and arithmetic.  They are ALL vital!  I realize there is not enough room on the front of this worksheet, so use the back or staple on your work paper.
*I am pretty certain that some of you did NOT pick up your homework today.  In order to keep pace, I do have a copy of the worksheet here for you to use.
Due Wednesday

Homework for Monday, November 5

Decimals #2:  Multiplication
Today you received an assignment based upon how you did on the pre-quiz multiplication.  Please be careful and accurate in how you complete these problems.
*If you received the "SuperKids" worksheet (don't ask, I didn't write it I just printed it) then you have the worksheet that will allow you to check off multiplication on your gold card.  You MUST get above 80% though and you MUST show me every little bit of your work/steps.
*We ran through this pretty quickly in class today.  Remember to use money as your guide in creating your own rules.  Still, if you need help in remembering, you can use this link.
Due Tuesday

Homework for Thursday, Nov. 1

Assignment:  Organize your airplane data list
*Greatest to least, least to greatest, it does not matter!  Organizing it either way works.
*Do NOT do any of the rest of this worksheet.  I will need to check your ordered list before we move on.  We will be completing a lot of this IN class.
*Tomorrow you have Dia De Los Muertos, but you will still need to turn in this assignment on Friday so I can check it this weekend.
Celebrate well!
Mo ;-)

Homework: Halloween Eve

Assignment:  Create a paper airplane
This is an effort based grade based upon:
*you must use a single sheet of 8 1/2 x 11 copy paper.
*you may use Scotch tape only.
*you may cut your plane to make flaps.
*you should decorate your plane, including your name.
*you should spend more than 2 minutes creating your plane TONIGHT.  Look on the internet, ask someone, test it out.  This IS your plane for the duration of this unit, so do a good job of it.
*you may not use any other kind of tape.
*you may not add anything else to your plane, including weights.
*you should not build your plane in carpool tomorrow morning; it won't be "effortful" enough ... and I know what effort is.
*you will lose a point if your plane is late - DUE THURSDAY at the beginning of the day.
When you get to school tomorrow, please come park your plane in your room #1 airplane hangar so that it doesn't get squished or bent in any way.
-Please do not fly them in the classroom or the hallways.
-Respect all planes; do not touch or mess with anyone else's plane.
THANKS!  Fasten your seatbelts and prepare for flight,
Mo ;-)

Homework for Tuesday, 10/30

Assignment:  Decimal Ordering ws
As I looked over this worksheet, I realized that it would be a good little review for everyone regardless of whether or not they'd "passed" the decimal ordering section on the pre-quiz.  Hopefully you will find it easy!
*This worksheet is kind of tightly organized; please help me out and circle your answers.  ;-)
*Think carefully about your place values ... that's the (decimal) point! haha
*Sorry, there is no copy of this worksheet available online.  You can find extra copies hanging on the homework board in room 1.
Due Wednesday

Monday, October 29, 2012

Homework for Monday, Oct. 29

Assignment:  Decimals #1
For this assignment, you either received practice in subtraction or an addition application worksheet.
*For the subtraction practice make sure that you set up your problems by aligning the decimals and adding zeros if necessary.
- Think money: if you have $1.00 and subtract $0.75 you need those zeros!
- Remember: you will never, ever, ever ... forget how to subtract decimals again.
*For the addition application practice worksheet, you should add to get your answers.
- Be sure to show all of your work somewhere on the page or on an attached sheet of paper.
- You may need to look up some definitions of the polygons and terms used in the problems, but that's just fine!  Go for it.
- Also for this worksheet:  l = length, w = width, and s = side
Due Tuesday

Homework for Thursday, 10/25

Assignment: 3 Interviews and 1 Teaching Moment
 The Interviews -
You are to interview 3 different people and ask them, "How do you define a decimal number?"
- You are to write down who they are along with their explanation (do not worry whether or not they are correct).
- You are not to interview other NOVA students (unless it's your sibling) or NOVA teachers.
 The Teaching Moment -
You are to explain in your own words, using illustrations and examples as needed, why it is necessary to line up the decimal when adding.  Assume that you are teaching this skill to someone who either does not know or remember how to add decimal numbers.
*Turn this all in on one piece of paper.  Make sure that it is organized in a way I can read it!
Due Monday, October 29

Monday, October 22, 2012

Homework for Monday, 10/22

Assignment:  Central Tendencies and Graphing ws
*Please use the Mo'Help tab on this blog and select the link to review 5-number summaries if you have forgotten what to do.  It is spelled out there for you.
*Need another copy of the worksheet?
*Make sure you complete both sides of this assignment!
This assignment is due by Thursday, October 25, but I would LOVE it if you would turn it in tomorrow, Tuesday.  Just leave it in the basket in room #1!

Thursday, October 18, 2012

Homework for Thursday, Oct. 18

Assignment:  Test Corrections
*This is a homework assignment; these corrections do not count back towards your test points.
*If you would like help remembering all of the directions to this assignment, please click on this link where I have written it all down for you.  Seriously ... go there!
*You are responsible for correcting every problem that you missed (or that Mo missed if you got 100%).  If you showed your work, this step will be much easier for you!  If you did not show every step, you need to figure it out.  Seriously.
*Reasons like "I forgot," "I don't know," and "I made a mistake," are NOT acceptable answers!  Pretend like you are the teacher helping you identify your mistake and learn from it.  This assignment is about that learning.
*Be sure to correct your mistake(s) correctly.  If you miss a correction, it's still incorrect.
*Retests will be held the week of October 29 - November 2 during Gruel.  You will let me know which day you would like to retest (if you want to retest) and then you will be responsible for going during that lunch period where Maestra or Ms. Funchion will have your retest there for you.  You will receive your best test score for you final grade.
Your test corrections are due with a parent signature during math class on Monday, October 22 for one candy point.  Even if you forget it on Monday, you will still need to turn it in with the parent signature for credit asap.

Homework for Wednesday, Oct. 17

Homework?  Nope!
It's true.  We had our first test in class today and you deserve the night off from math homework.
*Test scores have been entered into TeacherEase.
*Tomorrow students will get their tests back and learn how to do test corrections.
*Retests will be the week after conferences in Gruel.  Students will have the option of retaking and receiving their best test score to represent their mastery of the order of operations.
Enjoy the night!

Homework for Tuesday, Oct. 16

Assignment:  Choice #3
Please select one of the following assignments in preparation for the test tomorrow.  This is it ... if you can do these operations accurately, you are good to go!
Correcting your work is important for checking your preparedness.  If you cannot do it tonight, it will be even more difficult under test pressure.
PLEASE send me an email (respond to this post) or ask your parents for help/clarification if you need it.
Options:
*Quizlet (to join, see the 10/15 blog entry)
 - there is a new set!  Order of Operations - more practice
*Order of Operations practice ws (with corrections)
If you selected the worksheet and misplaced it OR you thought you would do Quizlet and have decided not to (for whatever reason), please select the link to the worksheet above and you will find a copy there!
Due Wednesday

Homework for Monday, Oct. 15

Assignment:  Student Choice #2
*please write "Choice 2" on whatever you do.
Tonight you get to choose your homework again!  Remember that the point of this is to practice something that you believe YOU need to practice in order to be ready for the test.  Choose wisely!
These are your options:
1) Any of the following worksheets that you have not yet had:
   *Order of Operations (with exponents)
*Logan's Parentheses - this was the assignment Logan requested.  It's tough (you have to insert parentheses in equations to make the statements true), but you can all handle it!

Homework for Tuesday, Oct. 9

Assignment:  Data Dilemma ws
*Note that there are 5 data values in the first five problems and 6 data values in the second set.
*The mean is your best friend in this worksheet.  If you aren't best friends yet, follow this link ...
*Some of these are trickier!  Use what you know about each of those central tendencies to complete the sets.  Check your answers by reworking the problem using the numbers you determined to be the missing values.
*Please read the directions ON the worksheet; they contain valuable information necessary for your success.
*Some problems will have more than one answer; you only need to provide ONE complete data set for each problem.
Due Wednesday

Homework for Monday, Oct 8

Assignment:  Order of Operations #3
Well, we're moving along through these at a nice pace!  Please don't panic if it seems like we're moving too quickly ... it's all within your reach and I am doing my best to make sure your assignments reflect YOUR pace.
*This is your third individualized assignment.  It should stretch you a bit, but not too much.
*Please do your best to turn in your homework each day as that is how I determine which assignment you will receive next.
*Today in class we talked about showing all of your work.  You should realize by now that I'm serious.  Very, very soon I will not accept papers without the work attached.  It's such an important skill (besides that it helps me help you) that I will be very insistent!
*Next week we will be testing on the order of operations; I will let you know that date this Wednesday.

Quizlet!

Want a little extra math practice?  (you know you do)
Go to Quizlet.com (there is also a link on the right of this page) and join Quizlet, then send me a request to join the "Olympia Nova School" group.

I will be going over this in class soon, but this will give you a head start.  I have created practice sets for a variety of skills and there is no need to wait!

Enjoy the sunshine this weekend,
Mo ;-)

Homework for Thursday, 10/4

Assignment: Order of Operations #2
*This is your second (individualized) order of operations assignment
*Make sure you check any notes I wrote on your first assignment; I provided helpful tips for where you are making any errors.
*Be sure to show all of your steps down the page ... for some of you, this is the area you need the most work with.  In your future, you will be grateful. ;-)
*Don't forget there is also this HELP link too!
Due Friday

Homework for Weds, Oct. 3

Assignment:  What Does it Mean?  worksheet
*Be careful when determining your central tendencies.  If you mess it up at the start, you will mess up the entire worksheet.
*Answer the questions like the intelligent non-2nd grade person that you are.  Use some of the fabulous vocabulary and be specific in your reasoning.  Questions 4 - 6 are worth two points each and I won't give those points easily!
*Feel free to ask your parents "what" the question is asking if you aren't sure that you understand it.  It should be apparent from the way the question is worded, but ask if you don't feel that it is.
*I do have a copy of the worksheet HERE!
Due Thursday

Tuesday, October 2, 2012

Homework for Tuesday, Oct. 2

Assignment:  Central Tendency - Mean, Median, Mode ws
*Using the data accurately is key here!  Be sure to understand the question you are being asked and that you are reading the tables correctly.
*There are several parts to each problem, so be sure to solve all of the parts and to label them so I know which part you are answering.
*This is a worksheet that is not available online; extra copies are on the assignment board in the front of the classroom.
Due Wednesday

Monday, October 1, 2012

Homework for Monday, Oct. 1

Assignment:  Order of Operations #1
*This is an individualized assignment based upon your current comfort level with the order of operations.  These are KEY skills and I need to make sure you have all of them!
*Because you received different assignments, I do not have extra copies of the worksheets here.  You can receive another copy in class tomorrow if you lose yours.
*Gorillas Eat MuD and ASphalt:  for help with any details regarding any steps in the order of operations, please select this help link.  Hopefully I have answered all of your questions there!
*Do not create a lot of stress for yourself over this; we will be practicing these in class a lot.  Just keep learning the language.  ;-)
Due Tuesday

Note - keeping up with these nightly assignments is critical in helping me know where you are with these skills and assigning homework that is appropriate for you.  Please come in at break or lunch rather to ask me questions rather than waiting for the next day; I want to help!

Homework for Weds, Sept 26

Assignment:  Practice worksheet 11.2
*Complete the questions; be sure to answer what the question is asking you.
*Draw your box-and-whisker plots like you did in yesterday's homework.  (the link to "how to" draw them using a number line is in that post)
*When answering #11 and #12, look ONLY at the graphs that you drew in order to make your conclusions.  "Knowing" the data is not the point, but "seeing it" is in graphical form is.
Due Thursday

Tuesday, September 25, 2012

Homework for Tuesday, Sept. 25

Assignment:  Box-and-Whisker Plot Practice
*There are 5 problems on this worksheet; be sure to complete all parts of all of them!

Homework for Monday, Sept. 24

Assignment:  Sodas worksheet #27
*Sorry, I do not have a copy of this worksheet available online as I cannot reproduce it in my Google docs.  If you lost/forgot it, you will need to get another copy off the homework board tomorrow.
*What a crazy survey ... someone noticed that a student claims to drink 10 sodas a day.  Yikes!  Just go with it.  ;-)
*Carefully think about the questions and explain your answers.  In other words, you get credit for the answer AND credit for your explanation, so be thorough.
*For problem 14b, you can write a description or actually draw/create the imaginary bar graph as described.  Your choice!
Due Tuesday

Thursday, September 20, 2012

Homework for Thursday, Sept 20

Assignment:  3 Box Plots and 3 Observations
*You should have all of this information; please see the Sept 19 entry if you would like help making your box plots.
*Your 3 observations should represent what you DO understand about reading box plots.  Don't worry about whether your observations are accurate at this time; I am primarily interested in seeing where you are in this process.  Just communicate what you think you see!
Due Friday

Wednesday, September 19, 2012

Homework for Wednesday, Sept 19

Assignment:  3 Box Plots
*Note that you are only required to draw your three box plots tonight.  Don't worry about the observations yet!
*You should have three 5-number summaries:  yours, your partner's, and the class summary that I gave you in class.
*Number the years down the left side of your page, plot your 5 points, then draw the boxes and the whiskers.  Need help?  Try this link.
*Tomorrow we will go over reading and making observations using box plots.  Feel free to take a stab at making one observation, but it's not necessary.
Due Friday

Due Thursday:  Coin data, histograms, and observations.
*You will need to turn in these items, stapled together:
1) Your random chaos and organized lists
2) Your 3 histograms of yours, your partner's, and the combined data.
3) Your histogram of the class data.
4) Your 4 (total) observations.

Tuesday, September 18, 2012

Homework for Tuesday, September 18

Assignment:  Class Histogram Graph and 1 more Awesome Observation
*Complete a class histogram (bar graph) on the large sheet of graph paper I handed out in class.  Click here for help in setting up your graph.
*Click on the following links for the data specific to your math period:
  ***Period 1 class data
  ***Period 2 class data
*Make ONE more observation and include it on the sheet with your other 3 observations (see yesterday).
-This observation should compare your class data with either yours, your partner's, or your combined data.  It should include specific examples and use some of the math vocabulary we reviewed today.
- Some possible vocabulary ideas to jump-start your observation: range, scale, outlier, shape, percent, fraction, difference, compare, double/triple.
Have this ready Wednesday, September 19.

Monday, September 17, 2012

Homework for Monday, September 17

Homework:  Three Graphs and Three Observations
*You need to use the graphs you made for these observations
-your coins, your partner's coins, combined coins
*You need to make 3 different awesome observations of your choice ... what interesting things did you notice?  Remember "Ella's" observations are not detailed enough!
*Use numbers, examples, and any math language you know to make your points.
*HINT - I should be able to tell from your explanation what your point is and what the data you are comparing looks like without looking at your graphs.
Due Tuesday

Wednesday, September 12, 2012

Homework for Wednesday, Sept 12

Assignment:  Complete 3 histograms of coin data (on one sheet)
*You need to complete 3 histograms (bar graphs) of the coin data that you collected in class.  Those histograms should reprsent:
1) Your data
2) Your partner's data
3) Your combined data

*You received graph paper and instructions for how to do this in class, but you can find detailed information of those instructions by clicking on this link.
*Each graph should be in a different color to help differentiate your findings and help you to see the shape of the data ... all topics we will cover next Monday!
*If you have further questions, please ask me at Camp Colman or send me an email ... after checking the link above, of course!

Your histograms are due on Monday, September 17 along with your 20 coins, frequency charts, and un/organized lists.

Tuesday, September 11, 2012

Homework for Tuesday, September 11

Assignment #3:  Data Lists
*You should have two pieces of notebook paper for this assignment.
*On your first piece of notebook paper you should have labeled and completed lists for-
1) Random Chaos: The dates of your 20 pennies listed in the order you pulled them from your baggie.
2) Organized List: The dates of your pennies organized in order from newest coins (at the top) to oldest coins (at the bottom).  Be sure to list EVERY date separately, even if the dates are the same.
*On your second piece of notebook paper you should have all of the dates listed from 2012 to the oldest coin in your data set.   This is for your:
3) Frequency Tables:  Put a tally mark for each of the coins in your baggie in the appropriate column.  It is best if you practice this by randomly selecting the coins from your bag like you did in the original random chaos list.
*Double check all of your lists - they should have identical data!
*Bring these completed sheets to class on Wednesday, 9/14.
*Note - without these sheets you will be unable to participate in what we are doing in class.  Come prepared or you will have a lot of homework to catch up on!

Monday, September 10, 2012

Homework for Monday, September 10

Assignment #2:  20 pennies
*Your pennies belong in a sealed, plastic baggie with your name clearly printed on it.
*Bring these to class on Tuesday, September 11 so you can participate fully!

Note: Have you turned in your email address for me yet so I can hook you up with Teacherease?  Please do asap!

Welcome to NOVA 2012/13

Welcome!

My blog is intended for use primarily by my Transition Math students at NOVA.  However, there are other options here and I encourage you to look around to see what I have available for you.

Daily entries will be made for Transition Math homework.  This will include details about specific assignments, their due dates, and (often) copies of the assignments themselves.  These entries will appear in the archives, by date, on the right side of this blog.  You can see examples by selecting any month.

Buttons at the top of this home page will take you to my other pages.  These pages are pretty self-explanatory, but will also change depending upon the season.  For example, my Mo' Chicks button will soon disappear and Mo'Soccer will arrive prior to the spring, but the Mo'Help and Mo'Vids buttons will remain at all times.  The Mo'Help button in particular will provide extra skill tips for students and parents to refer to at home.  Check them out!

Links at the right of this page are also helpful.  All of us at NOVA link to each other's pages, so you can navigate back and forth easily.  I recommend "joining" the relevant class blogs so that you will receive updates even when you are not necessarily checking each blog daily.  I also have links to Quizlet, TeacherEase, and to our previous Algebra teacher who is currently teaching in Hungary!

Comments and questions can be left after each daily entry, especially if you need a response from me.  These are connected directly to my email and I am generally able to get to back to you that same evening.

I hope you find this blog helpful; it has been an invaluable tool for my students these past few years.

I look forward to this school year with all of you!
Mo ;-)

August update

Ella on the raft
Greetings!  We returned recently from our family (all of us plus my mother, brothers, and their families) vacation where we do nothing but read, swim, ski, sleep, eat, and play card games.  Totally relaxing, no internet access, just sunshine and family.  But now it's back to reality as I make last-month preparations for the new school year.

*Check the upcoming dates to the right on this blog.  There you will find an updated version of what's happening this month.  Yep, school business happens even during the summer months.
*Your schedules for the fall should begin appearing on TeacherEase around August 20.  If you haven't turned in your Enrichment Options form yet (see tab above for copies and information) then you need to do so quickly or you are completely at my scheduling mercy ... not that it's a terrible place to be, I promise.

Enjoy the rest of your summer.
I look forward to seeing you all!
Mo ;-)

A sunset view across the lake ... peaceful.

Enrichment!

We're excited about our new Enrichment Options that current NOVA students will be able to take in the fall.  They are the same classes with twists ... and you can select them!  Of course there are requirements and a form to fill out, but we think you'll like it.  This is our pilot trimester, so you can help us work out the kinks as well ...

Your packet should be arriving at a mailbox near you soon!  Keep your eyes open, because the deadline for your selections is to have your form back to the NOVA office by Monday, July 23.

Please select the Enrichment Tab at the top of this blog for copies of the forms, FAQs, and a place to ask questions.  There is an electronic option available there too, but I prefer the paper copies you received in the mail for my organizational sanity.

Happy mid-summer!
Mo ;-)

Postcards from the edge

It's July already!  I hope you are having all having a wonderful summer so far.

Postcards:  If you haven't read the project Mr. Gacek and I are trying to do this summer, see the previous post.  So far we have postcards from Fuchsia and Lucas; Cleo is on board to send one from New York soon.  Join us in mapping our travels!

Pre-Algebra:  For those of you studying pre-algebra this summer in hopes of passing the test in August, you should be in the throes of chapter 3 by now.  It's a big chapter that will probably need more time than the previous 2, so give it your full attention.  I have not set dates for the final exams yet, but you can target around August 17 in your mind.

Best wishes!
Mo ;-)

Welcome to Summer!

I had a fabulous time with you all on the spring trip; thank you.  It's too bad the weather did not cooperate, but we still had a good time.  I thought our chaperons were truly fabulous and helped to make it a wonderful experience for everyone.  Other than Jakub's burning backpack setting off the smoke alarm and the wind/rain keeping us from being able to ride horses, we were glitchless!

Yes, I will write posts occasionally this summer, so check back occasionally.

The pre-algebra page for those of you studying it this summer has been added to the tabs above; please check it out first if you have questions.

Enjoy the summer and send those postcards!  Mr. Gacek & I plan to make a big map with all of them attached.

Ella, Brownie, & Fluffy wish you all a happy summer!
Best to all,

Homework for Thursday, May 31

Assignment:  Reflection: Future Family Budget
*The directions really are on the assignment, but here is the intent:
- Show me that you can apply what you learned from imaginary budgets you were restricted to with what your real life might look like one day.  As you think about the limitations you "lived," try to remember when you thought, "I certainly wouldn't spend this much on my vacations!" or "I plan on growing much more of my own food," or "I would take the bus if I had this little money," and so on.  This is intended to be an emotional reaction to the Average American Budget and how you see yourself in relation to that experience.
- There are no right or wrong answers, but your thoughtful answers will indicate how much effort you put into applying what you experienced.
*Your budget should NOT look exactly like the Average American.
*Your budget MUST add up to 100% on page one.
I cannot upload the pie chart I copied onto the worksheet, but here is a copy of the questions.
Due Friday, June 1, or Monday June 4 at the latest!

Wednesday, May 30, 2012

Homework? Wednesday, May 30

New Assignment?  Nope
However, you should be completing any papers you want to turn in or redo so you can turn them in by THIS Friday!
*Pre-algebra pre-test continues in class Thursday:  fractions, proportions, percentages, probability.
*Retests for the percentage/proportions unit continue; make sure yours is planned!
*Reflective piece for the Finance Park will be assigned on Thursday.

Homework for Tuesday, May 29

Assignment:  Your very own Funny Ha Ha!
*You will know it is correct because it will be funny ... or it will not ... but in either case it will make sense!
*Please do not forget to turn this in:  credit/no credit

Thursday, May 24, 2012

Looking ahead, Thursday 5/24

Assignments:  Nothing New
Due Friday, May 25:  Finance Park Books
*We went over in class how to prioritize this huge assignment so as not to sabotage your own points.  Tackle the larger value assignments first and then evaluate what you have left versus losing 10% over the weekend.
Assigned next Tuesday:  Mini Math Assignment, your choice
Wednesday in class:  Non-graded "test" over order of operations, decimals, and negatives.  This is used to assess your readiness for pre-algebra next fall.
Thursday in class:  Non-graded "test" over fractions, ratios, proportions, percents, and conversions.  Ditto above.
Due Friday:  Finance Park Reflections.  This will be available NEXT Tuesday, but it is not due until Friday.  It is your last official Transition Math assignment!

LAST DAY to turn in Transition Math late and redone assignments is Friday, June 1st.

Wednesday, May 23, 2012

Homework for Wednesday, 5/23

Nothing new!
Keep working on your Finance Park book assignments.  This should be your priority in math, right now.
*Double check on the Finance Park tab of this blog that you have ALL of the assignments written into the assignment sheet in the front of your book.
*Turn it in early if you want to.  If I notice anything that you can correct between now and Friday, you will have that option.
*You will not have time in math class tomorrow beyond the first 15 minutes of class, so this has turned into homework for most of you.  Plan well!
Books are Due Friday, 5/25

Tuesday, May 22, 2012

Homework for Tuesday, May 22

Assignment:  Student Choice pre-retest
I know it's a busy time for you all, but we do have loose ends we need to wrap up.  Today you should have received something specific to your needs for the retest that will happen in class tomorrow.  Please have someone check over your work if you get stuck; it's important that you remember how to do these types of problems!
*Quizlet is always an option for this assignment.  The categories you can select from are Percents and Proportions (aka verbal expressions), Fractions to Decimals, Decimals, Fractions, Percents, Proportion Applications, and Sven's Proportion Problems.  Tonight we are using the "Learn" option.
DUE WEDNESDAY

Monday, May 21, 2012

Assignments for Monday, May 21

In your book:  the final assignments!
*Partner - in class assignment:  The Price We Pay, pg 46
- this was a fun competition completed in class today.  If you were absent, just complete it for credit ... it's not about getting them correct, it's about having fun guessing!
*Unit 3 Test: pages 80 - 82
- this will be graded IN CLASS on Tuesday, May 22.  This is an open-book, open-parent test and you will be graded on the number you have correct!  This should be a priority tonight; it cannot be handed in late.
*Extra Credit:  Crossword Puzzle, page 117
- You may only get extra credit for this assignment IF you have completed all of your other FP Book assignments and IF you turn in your book on time.

Finance Park books are due for the final time on Friday, May 25.
Books will lose 10% per school day that they are turned in late.  Absences DO NOT extend this grace period.  You have all of your assignments in the book now, so be working to complete them at home if necessary.

Thursday, May 17, 2012

For tomorrow, May 18

FINANCE PARK FIELD TRIP
*Be in room #1 by 8:00 Friday morning or have notified the office that you are running late or will be absent.  The bus will leave as promptly as possible!
*Bring a sack lunch with your name on it.  Include a beverage if you want one.
*You do not need to bring anything besides your lunch.
-the park provides pencils and calculators
*For the BUS only:  you may bring a book, but leave it on the bus once you arrive.
-you may NOT bring any electronic items (phones, ipods, etc)

Be prepared to live your new life and have fun!
I will see you all up there,
Mo ;)

Assignments for Wednesday, May 16

In your book:
Cable and Eating Out, page 112
*Pretty straight-forward; most of you will go over on your cable, so be careful when you eat out!
Established Expenses, page 95
*Also straight-forward: you must insure your family and yourself.
*Your savings and charity categories are just guidelines.  These are the only categories where you are not required to be within your minimum/maximum.  Use the money you have left at the end of the month to fulfill these categories, bringing your checkbook balance to $0!
Actual Budget, page 113
*After you add up what you have spent,  bring your checking balance to $0 by dividing that money up in savings and charity (your choice).  You will need to match your NMI to complete this mathematical task.
*Be sure to add up the money you've spent correctly ... check it twice!
*This should be the last step in your so-called life.  Hopefully.  If you've overspent, you are going to have to go back and save somewhere.  Find a category that you spent near you maximum in and redo it.  It's a hard-knock life, eh?

In class tomorrow:  details about our field trip on Friday!

Tuesday, May 15, 2012

Assignment for Tuesday, May 15

In your book:  Home Improvement, page 105 - the ORANGE worksheet
*Follow the instructions on the worksheet; we are NOT doing page 105 in the book except to copy the amount you pay per month to the last line.
*Details to keep track of include "spending" enough money, interest charges, taxes, number of different items to buy, paying some in cash, and figuring out the final total to pay each month.
*Glue your purchases to either the orange sheet or page 105 in your book.
*Complete the line items (cost and number purchased) for each of your items ON the orange worksheet.
*The LAST line, Line 8, on your worksheet is the amount that needs to fall between you minimum and maximum.
*An EXTRA orange worksheet is here for you to use.

Monday, May 14, 2012

Assignment for Monday, 5/14

In your book:  Clothing, page 110
*Make sure you use the sticker I handed out in class to determine what you need to purchase, NOT the categories in the book.  A copy of the sticker is HERE.
*These are the MINIMUM purchases you need to make.  You can always buy more as long as you do not go over budget.  As a matter of fact, if you are a thrifty shopper you may need to buy something else in order to reach your minimum.
*Do not forget that the "anything of your choice" is something you must buy in addition to the other items.
*These are all supposed to be clothing items; make sure you are buying clothing (jewelry, hats, gloves, etc.)
*Your clothes need to fit the intended age rage of your child.  Ask your parents if you are not sure what size your child would wear, but generally infants wear infant size (0-24 months or baby), 2T - 4T covers ages 2 - 4, children are usually covered in a "children" category (sizes 4 - 12 or XS - XL children size), and teens are "teen," also often XS - XL, but in the teen department.
*You must cut out the advertisement, the picture, AND especially the price of your item.  Glue them into your book and let me know on what page your clothing items are pasted.

Update for Friday, May 11

First of all, I cannot stress enough how you all need to follow the directions in the book for these Finance Park assignments.  A lot of the questions you wait to ask me are answerable right there on the assignment page.  Follow the directions.  Subtract where they tell you to subtract, divide by the number they tell you to divide by.  Etc.  If you have a question about a specific assignment (like how to follow the directions) go to the link on the Finance Park Book page of this blog.  Seriously ... I put them there for a reason!  I want you to be able to complete these without having to be in the classroom to ask me.

If you have questions that would benefit everyone and you cannot find the answer, PLEASE ask that question in a comment on this post and I will answer it and/or create a link with the answer.

Assignment in your book:  Entertainment and Recreation, page 111.
Things we changed from what's in your book:
*You may use the internet; activities do not have to be found in the newspaper.
*Whether you are single or married, if you have children you must spend an evening out and hire a babysitter.
*Eating out for the purpose of this page IS different from the Cable and Eating Out page.
*DETAILS must be included: cost of each ticket, where specifically you are going, how many people you are buying for (and individual costs), etc.  If you eat out, tell me the menu items you chose and how much they are.  Use the menus available on the internet (or an actual menu) to order.  Make sure your Line 5 answer (total) is between your minimum and your maximum.

Thursday, May 10, 2012

Homework for Thursday, 5/10

20)  Utilities, page 101
*this page cannot be completed until you make your housing choice
21)  Unit 2 Test, page 61
*This is an open book test; all of the answers are in chapter 2 IN your book
*You may certainly use a parent to help you answer these questions.  The important thing is that you know the answers!
*We will be correcting this in class tomorrow.
22)  Transportation Fixed, pages 102 - 103
*First: you MUST buy a car that fits your family.  For example, if you are a single parent with an infant, you still cannot buy a two-seater vehicle because you cannot put an infant in the front seat of a car.  If you have a spouse and 3 children, make sure you have 5 seats!  Also, the ONLY people who can buy motorcycles are those of you who are single with no children.
*The COST of your car is different from the PAYMENT you will make each month.  You will need to work through the ENTIRE page(s) before you know whether or not you can afford to buy your car.
*Follow the tables and the directions in your book ... be sure to include your lucky and/or unlucky chance if it applies
*Fuel Efficiency will be noted in the advertisement if it applies - it's a good selling point!  You may look online to verify fuel efficiency: it is either considered that it is or it isn't.
*Glue your car on to the bottom of page 103.
23) Transportation Variable, page 104
*After you have bought your car, complete this page based upon what you've bought. Follow the directions on the page!

Due Thursday:  Life Poster
*If you have not yet received your "previously known" names from me, be sure to ask!
*The outside border of your paper should be decorated.
*This is an effort based grade.  Make it lovely!

Homework for Tuesday, May 8

FP Assignments:
#18)  Housing, pages 98 - 100
*Please use the orange/red worksheet that I gave you to determine the price of a house you can afford to buy.  All of the directions you need are on that sheet.
*You must use newspapers or real estate brochures to find your housing.  You may not do an internet search.
*The physical advertisement for your housing must be cut out and glued onto either the top of page 99 (for buyers) or the bottom of page 100 (for renters).  This advertisement MUST include the cost of the housing and the number of bedrooms if you have children.
*To complete this assignment:
a) Page 99 (for buyers) or 100 (for renters) must be completed as per directions on that page.
b) Your monthly payment must fall between your minimum and maximum as figured on your Budget Guidelines, page 94, of your workbook.
c) The complete advertisement for your housing must be glued onto the page.
Note: if you have a Lucky Chance down payment, you must use it now for credit!  If you choose to rent, then write "I rented" next to your lucky chance sticker and then check it off on your assignment sheet.
#19)  Unlucky Chance (pages vary)
Note: I neglected to change the page numbers on these stickers, so use the category for your sticker rather than the page number to determine where to stick it.
*Follow the same basic guidelines as for your lucky chance: read the directions on the sticker, write the page number in your book, and check it off when you have completed it.

LIFE POSTERS may now be completed.  Make sure you get your "previously known as" people from me!
These are Due Thursday, May 10, decorated and fabulous!

Book Assignment:  Food Expenditures, pg 109
*You must have completed your NMI (page 93) and your Budget Guidelines (pg 94) in order to do this assignment
*Other than page 109, we are NOT using the other food pages in the book for this assignment.  Instead, you will use the Food Options chart I handed out in class today.
*Be sure to buy food for everyone in your family and as related to their age
*Be sure to note when totals equal weekly versus monthly; you need to complete 4 weeks to have your monthly total.
*Show the math SOMEWHERE: on your green sheet, page 109, wherever, just remember to include it.  Label it.  If I cannot tell what you bought (which options, meals out, etc) then you will not pass this assignment.
*You MUST spend between your minimum and your maximum (page 94) unless your Lucky Chance says otherwise.
*Copies of the Food Options chart and more detailed instructions for this assignment are HERE!

Today in class we also figured out mileage to your places of work.  This should be written on page 91 of your workbook.
This is the number you will use (don't worry about to/from); just write it in the blank!
Remember that this could change for the worse tomorrow when we draw unlucky chances!

Homework for Thursday, May 3

*NOTE: If you would like to take any sections of your math retest tomorrow, you may select one of your morning Mercado rotations  and do so.  Be sure to let me know in the morning!

Complete:  Your NMI on page #93.
*Go to the Mo'Help page of this blog and click on the link for additional instructions on how to complete this assignment.
*This assignment must be completed accurately in order to even begin the Budget Guidelines assignment (below).

*Follow this link if you have additional questions
*This assignment must be completed accurately in order to begin purchasing items for your Life on Monday!
16)  Lucky Chance
*The page number where I can find your sticker should be written in the front of your book (as assignment #17) and written on line 13, page 92 of your Life Profile.
*The huge majority of you cannot do anything with your Lucky Chance sticker yet beyond these steps.  Have patience!
*When you DO complete your Lucky Chance, please check it off in the front of the book.  Your Lucky Chance is graded on following the directions completely AND accurately.

Assignments for Wednesday, May 2

Assignments in your Finance Park Book:
#13)  Net Monthly Income (NMI) page 92
*you can only complete problems 1 - 3 at this time, but be sure that you complete them correctly!
1 - This is the number on your sticker
2 - Divide that gross number by 12 (use a calculator and round to the nearest dollar if you want to)
3 - Using the federal tax table sheet that I gave you: find your gross annual income on the sheet, go to the column based upon your marital status, and find the amount of taxes you will pay annually.  Write this number beneath #3, but divide it by 12 and then write that number in the box on the right.
Note:  If your parents are helping you with this, they will notice that these are old tax tables (specifically 2001), but these older numbers are the numbers that I have based your budget on, so please do not get a current tax table to use for this assignment.  If you are interested though, look it up online and see how much you would have paid this year!
#14)  NMI Calculation Practice page 55 (1 - 3 only)
*All of the practice scenarios are given to you on the page; you may use a calculator if you would like to.
*Deductions are the amount of money you will pay in taxes; your income is not a deduction.
*The last line is the NMI ... remember what those letters stand for?
(see the Mo'help page if you need to)

Tomorrow:  More taxes, your NMI, and lucky chances!

Homework for Tuesday, May 1

Homework:  Life Poster
*You received your "Life Poster" today, but you are not able to complete it yet because you are still missing a lot of the information.  Hopefully you were able to  attach your family picture and store it in your airplane hangar.
*Eventually, you will be asked to decorate the poster border, but don't worry about that yet unless you are completely caught up with the rest of the assignments.
*We will be covering the rest of the information you need in class.
Due date TBA

Finance Park Book Assignments:
#10)  Credit Card Decisions, pg 14
*Be sure to ask your parents if these questions are unclear to you.  I want you to have these conversations, so take advantage of their knowledge!

#11)  A Big Decision, pg 18
*This is your opportunity to look at the pros and cons of buying on credit.  Whether or not you choose to use credit cards in your future, there are pros and cons so list plenty of both.  The decision about how to weigh those pros and cons will ultimately be yours.

Homework for Wednesday, 4/25

First of all, congratulations on your new lives!  The challenges have just begun and they will all be unique, but you will learn more than you can imagine about how math works in your life as well as things about yourself you may or may not have realized.  Don't worry, your relationship with your stock brokers will be made clearer over the next week.  Now ...

Assignment #5: Investment Options, pg 29
*Please ignore the choices: you are to research the risks and benefits of STOCK investments.
*Also, be prepared to talk about what stocks ARE.  It is only one kind of investment option, but it is the primary one we will be "using" this year.

Homework? Thursday, 4/19

No, there is no math homework tonight.
*However, this would be an excellent opportunity to complete any missing papers or papers that you would like to redo before conferences.  Anything turned in by tomorrow, April 20, will be entered into TeacherEase this weekend.

At this moment, I do not plan to enter your test scores into TeacherEase tonight.  There are several tests still in limbo and I want to have those completed first.  However, you should have test corrections tomorrow (in class) or this weekend, as per whatever applies to you.
*The retest date WILL happen, but I haven't yet decided when it will be.

I hope to see you at the Poetry Performances at the Olympia Timberland Regional Library tonight at 7:30!
