Decimal Application Test results

Seriously, overall you did well on the test today!  Kyle still has a few of you flustered, but no one let him completely overwhelm you.
There were SIX 100%!  Is one of them you?!?!  To find out, go to TeacherEase.
So now, here's how we are wrapping up this fall trimester:
*In class tomorrow we will be going over the test, making test corrections, and deciding if you want to retest the application section.
- how to decide?  Check to see TONIGHT how this test score has impacted your grade and whether or not that bothers you.  If you are happy, let it rest and move on.  Kyle will let you go ... for now. ;-)
- If you choose to retest we will do so next week.  Depending on how many people want to retest, it will either occur in class or in Gruel.  This WILL still apply to your fall trimester grade.
*Thursday, November 28 is the absolute LAST day that I will take any late or redone papers.  If you have really old papers they do not apply to this deadline as THAT deadline was Friday, November 16 (check out the sidebar I have on this blog for "upcoming dates.")  So we're talking about the Kyle and Mavis papers we have done since then.  Thanks!
P.S. This last deadline does not apply to Kameko, Claire, or Emily who missed most of the days this past week.  Their Kyle/Mavis deadline is Tuesday, December 4.
NO HOMEWORK in math tonight.  Study for your Spanish and Language Arts!
Best to you all (try to sleep well),
Mo ;-)

Homework for Tuesday, November 27

Assignment: Student Choice
You were to choose an assignment today that you felt would help prepare you for the application test tomorrow.  Accuracy is important!
Here were your choices:
Hard copy of worksheet with more Kyle and Mavis
***please note that the answer to #9 is a typo!  It should read 8.09 NOT 8.90.  I apologize for all of you for whom this has caused great stress.  :(
Hard copy of Verbal Expressions (not on the test, but an option for the confident!)
Quizlet - print out the test after you have completed it; please un-select the true/false option.
*you may choose either the Decimal Applications or the Verbal Expressions option.
This is a credit/no credit assignment.  Turn in your corrected assignment at the beginning of class this Wednesday for full credit.

Homework:  More with Mavis ws
Today you will meet Mavis who owns a muffin shop.  Although this worksheet is called, "More with Mavis," this is indeed the first time you have met her.  You will see lots of her though!
*There is a copy of this assignment HERE.
*Practice your applications carefully.  Make sure that you understand the question and organize your work accordingly.  Your arithmetic must be accurate.
*The Mavis and Kyle questions are all examples of what could appear on the application section of the test this Wednesday.  Get comfortable with the ins and outs of the vocabulary and how to separate the information you need from the information that you do not need.  If you do, the test WILL be easy!
*Remember that there are more decimal application problems on Quizlet.  Practice will help you move through these types of problems more quickly.  Trust me.

Thanksgiving Math?

Assignment:  Job Crisis B
Kyle is back to give you more experience with applications involving decimals and his inability to keep one job.
*Points: do you know what to do (which operations and when) and are you accurate with your decimals?
*You had the opportunity to do most of this in class today, so if you did not finish you shouldn't have much to worry about this break.  DO take your time though.  ;-)
*On Monday you will get the Job Crisis C.  If you turned in B today, you will get it back and be able to look over your mistakes (or lack thereof) before Wednesday's test.  If you turn it in on Monday, I will get it back to you on Tuesday.
*Study Kyle on Quizlet if you get the chance, eh?  It's worth it.  Kyle WILL be on the application test Wednesday, so you want to master him.
*For those of you absent today for whatever reason, HERE is the copy of this Kyle assignment.
Due Monday

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!!

Assignment for Monday, 11/19

Work in progress:  5-number summary, central tendencies, and box plot of your airplane
*Ideally you completed 95% of this in class!
*You may use a calculator to double-check your medians and determine the mean.
  - Once you have gotten an answer twice you may assume it is correct.
*Go to the Mo'Help page if you cannot remember how to complete your summary or draw your box plot.
*Box plots should have a scale of 1 box = 0.25m or 25 cm; this should be included somewhere on your graph.
*Your zero value should be at the bottom of your graph with 13m as the top value.
*Please label every meter on your graph.
This is NOT due tomorrow; your priorities should be your geography map, Golden Compass reading, and project for Mr. Kehoe.  You WILL want to be caught up, but don't sweat it tonight; you will NOT be handing this in at this time.

Weekend Update: 11/17

First of all, congratulations to the NOVA basketball team on their victory today!  Great teamwork from everyone.  Sign-ups will be soon (believe it or not) for the Winter season.  I'm hoping to have volleyball AND basketball teams; I will be making an announcement at this Monday's assembly and have a sign-up information tab on this blog by then too.

Next week we will be working on decimal applications and our paper airplane project.  You can begin practicing (lots of Kyle) on Quizlet if you haven't yet.  The decimal application test will be on Wednesday, November 28.

It's a short week, but we will be busy so don't fall behind.  There will only be 4 days left after Thanksgiving to redo the new assignments!  Check the no-name board for any missing assignments.

Due Monday:  Test Corrections with parent signature for one candy point!

Homework? 11/15

Nope!
Focus on your other homework tonight, but don't forget to complete any math papers you would like to redo or have not turned in yet.  It's almost the end of the trimester (already?!?!) and you want your grade to best represent your learning for this fall trimester.
*Your tests have been graded and recorded in TeacherEase, so check yours out!  FANTASTIC job overall.  I am super impressed with how quickly and accurately you all picked up the skills you had either forgotten or had not even previously learned.
*Retests will be the last week of the trimester, November 26 - 29.
You may choose to retest part 1 (computation only), part 2 (order of operations with decimals only), or both.  You may take them on separate days also, but plan ahead so you do not run out of days in the week!
*The applications section of the test will be that week also; date to be announced.
Test Corrections tomorrow, due Monday.

Homework for Weds, 11/14

Assignment:  Pre-Test Student Choice
Students had a lot of options to choose from today.  Hopefully, you chose one that will help you feel well-prepared for the test tomorrow.
Remember:
*CORRECT your mistakes.  Learn from them!
*Quizlet is an option, but be sure to print out your page and turn it in.
*This is a credit/no credit assignment.  You are graded on completing it, on time, and turning it in.
*Late papers (not turned in tomorrow) will receive 1/2 credit.
Note: If you do not have a worksheet and do not want to do Quizlet, you will need to send me an email pronto and I will help!

Homework for Tuesday, 11/13

Assignment:  Mixed Practice ws
Well, this is it.  These are the skills you will need to master for the test on Thursday.  If you can do this page easily, you're ready to rumble!
*There is a copy of the assignment HERE.  We will correct it in class tomorrow so you can better choose your homework for Wednesday night, so be sure to have it completed by class time.
*Note: there will also be problems involving the order of operations, so review those if you need to.
*Note: there will not be any application (story) problems on this test; we will take that section of the test during the week after Thanksgiving.
Due in class Tuesday

Advice for the week, from Mo ;-)

We will be taking the decimal unit test on Thursday of this coming week and a lot of you could use the extra practice.  Like juggling a soccer ball or dribbling a basketball, the more practice you have the more comfortable you are with the basic skills.  Think about this: you want to be comfortable and confident when faced with the inherent stresses of a testing situation.

If you haven't been there already, go to Quizlet ... now.  On my page you will find decimal practice with multiplication, division, a review (all operations), and applications.

Next week you will have a limited time to practice and get feedback for how you are doing, but Quizlet will give you that immediate feedback as you work through the problems.  These sets are at the level you will be expected to know by test time, so you should know going into the test how prepared you are.

Enjoy the extra long weekend, but keep thinking about your math!
(sounds fun, huh?)

Homework for Thursday, Nov 8

Homework: Decimal Division, whatever you asked for
Today we reviewed long division and then moved into division with decimals.  We also admitted -
*it is important that your answer makes sense.
*it is important to line up your work in long division in order to keep the place values straight.  Graph paper can help.
*150 divided by 3 is not the same as 15 divided by 3 which is not the same as 1.5 divided by 3 ... yet they are all related.  How do you know where to put the decimal?
*still confused?  Check my link!

Homework for Wednesday, Nov 7

Assignment:  Decimals Mult. #2
You received an assignment today that was catered to you, so I don't have options here to download.  Pick up an extra copy tomorrow if you need one.
*I will remind you to be more careful of everything today: arithmetic, zeros, and counting your decimal places.  As we discussed in class, paying hundreds of dollars extra for 12 pounds of chocolate is NOT okay!  Everything DOES matter.
*Be thinking also about how you can best prepare yourself for the decimal test.  Practicing does help and I have several options on Quizlet already.  Check it out now rather than waiting until the last minute, okay?
Assignment Due Thursday

Homework for Tuesday, 11/6

Assignment: Lesson 1.5 - Applications: Adding, Subtracting, Multiplying Decimals
*This is all about money, so round to the nearest cent (hundredth) after you have completed the arithmetic.
*Be sure to show your work so I can check how you set up your problems, operations choices, rounding, and arithmetic.  They are ALL vital!  I realize there is not enough room on the front of this worksheet, so use the back or staple on your work paper.
*I am pretty certain that some of you did NOT pick up your homework today.  In order to keep pace, I do have a copy of the worksheet here for you to use.

Homework for Monday, November 5

Decimals #2:  Multiplication
Today you received an assignment based upon how you did on the pre-quiz multiplication.  Please be careful and accurate in how you complete these problems.
*If you received the "SuperKids" worksheet (don't ask, I didn't write it I just printed it) then you have the worksheet that will allow you to check off multiplication on your gold card.  You MUST get above 80% though and you MUST show me every little bit of your work/steps.
*We ran through this pretty quickly in class today.  Remember to use money as your guide in creating your own rules.  Still, if you need help in remembering, you can use this link.
Due Tuesday

Homework for Thursday, Nov. 1

Assignment:  Organize your airplane data list
*Greatest to least, least to greatest, it does not matter!  Organizing it either way works.
*Do NOT do any of the rest of this worksheet.  I will need to check your ordered list before we move on.  We will be completing a lot of this IN class.
*Tomorrow you have Dia De Los Muertos, but you will still need to turn in this assignment on Friday so I can check it this weekend.
Celebrate well!
Mo ;-)
