Homework for Thursday, January 31

Assignment: Map Distances ws
Use the map to answer the questions; remember that it is NOT to scale, you will need to use the fractions to answer the questions.
*No short-cuts!  Follow the roads
*Make sure you answer all parts of each question
*On question #5, Tom begins at his house.  He does not need to run his errands in the given order and he will not return home.  Be extra careful on this one!

Homework for Wednesday, January 30

Assignment:  Fractions #3 - Addition
Today you taught me how to add fractions ... do you remember now?
If in doubt again, reteach yourself using 1/2 + 1/4 = 3/4, figure out what you did, and do that same sequence of calculations for other fractions.
If you are still in doubt, please go to the Mo'Help tab of this blog where I have tips.
*Today you will be adding fractions, differentiated for how you did on the pre-quiz.  These should stretch you a bit, but not be too difficult.
*If they seem easy, then you probably "forgot" how to do them on the pre-quiz ... do not forget again!
Serina, my dear, you will need to wait and get your assignment when you get back ... I need to make sure you know how to do it first because we went over it in class today.  Get well soon!

Homework for Monday, January 28

Assignment:  Fractions #1
You are going to have an added responsibility this trimester of keeping track of your own course of assignments.  I am thinking of having a list for you to write your assignments on every day ... will that help?  Especially as this unit progresses you are going to be increasingly on your own path, so checking here each night is not going to always work out for you.
Having said that:
*Tonight you have your first (worksheet) fraction assignement.  It has something to do with simplifying, equivalent fractions, or changing mixed to improper to mixed again, but there are many many versions out there.
*If you do lose your assignment at any time, I do have a record and you can check with me, but use this as an opportunity to keep better track of your homework, okay?
I have no copies of the assignments online tonight, but I just had an idea I will let you know tomorrow in class.
*Suggestion, helpful hint, and strong advice:  KEEP UP!

Homework for Wednesday, January 23

Assignment: Your Bingo Card
Get ready to become speedy with equivalent fractions!
It's one thing to be able to name an equivalent fraction and it's quite another to do it quickly and with confidence.  Our Bingo games will help you achieve those goals while playing; practice builds skills.
This assignment is graded on effort and accurately following these guidelines:
*You must color ALL circles.
*You must list ALL equivalencies up to a denominator of 12 for the colored fraction.
*You may only color one whole twice (but it is not required to do it twice) and you do not need to list the equivalencies for the whole.
Due: Thursday or Friday, your choice, just leave it in the basket in room #1.
You will not be eligible to play on Monday unless you have your card in by Friday, January 25.

Differentiation for our fractions unit is huge.  Students will have individual conferences with me beginning Monday, January 28, to set individual goals for this unit.  Students should look for ways to stretch their understandings and use them in context while learning all of the conventions for using fractions.  The opportunity for enrichments are endless!

Homework for Tuesday, January 22

Assignment:  1 Interview and Explanation
Today's assignment is to find someone who can explain to you why the given equation can or cannot be simplified.  It is also important to note that there may be different opinions out there and this is GOOD!  You can change ANY math problem in some way, but changing it to be even more complex is not necessarily a good thing.  It's why we say, "simplify" ... make it simple and/or solveable.
So ...
1) Show them this equation 1/x + 1/y = ?
2) Ask if it can be simplified or changed in a way that would lead to a solution.
3) Ask them WHY it works or would not work or would be better or would not be better, etc.
Most people who use variables in equations will know what I'm getting at.  If they do not know, feel free to ask someone else!  In other words, keep asking until you are happy with an answer.
4) Make sure that you understand what they are telling you; you need to be able to share their reasoning with your classmates.
5) Write down  who you asked, what their answer was, and their reasoning behind their answer.
This assignment is about the effort you put into exploring this question, not about being right or wrong.  Be willing to think about it!

Update: Wednesday, January 16

Being able to use any numbers in application is the ultimate purpose of mathematics.  Today you took a test where you needed to take positive and negative values, make sense of Mr. Gacek's antics, then determine the appropriate steps to finding a solution.
Overall I am THRILLED with your tests!  You took the time to read the problems carefully and make sure your answer matched the question.  There were actually TWELVE people who scored 100% ... congratulations!
I have your scores posted on TeacherEase already, so feel free to go there now and see how you did!
Retests will occur in Gruel beginning next week.

Have a great evening,
Mo ;-)

Homework for Tuesday, January 15

Assignment:  Real Life Negatives D or Quizlet (real life negatives set)
Please note that I WAS at a staff meeting (nearly forever, but actually until 5:00) and then I had a volleyball game, so I did not upload the new Quizlet set until 9:09 p.m.  I apologize if this caused you any inconvenience and hope you either used any of the negative integer sets or used the Real Life Negatives worksheet D instead.  Thank you for your patience!  Mo ;-)
HERE is the copy of the Real Life Negatives D worksheet.
The answer key IS posted HERE.
Due Wednesday before the test!
*eat well, sleep well, and use your best test taking strategies!
*retests for the first two sections/pages will be offered after you have completed the application section of the test.

Homework for Monday, January 14

Assignment:  Real Life Negatives C (extra copy)
You could do this assignment before you even knew how to do negatives, so this should be easy for you!  What are the keys?  Just like in your group task today:
*Understand the question
*Organize your information
*Work towards a solution
Do it in the most convenient, sensible way.  You don't even need to write official "equations" for these, but you should be thinking about them!

Tasks for Friday, January 11

Assignment:  Test Corrections
*Complete your test corrections with full reasons (not, "I forgot") for why you missed any problems along with the correct solution(s).
*Test correction forms must be signed by a parent; include whether or not you plan on retaking either page of the test.
*The first planned retake will be in class on Wednesday, January 16, as you complete the application section of the test.  Additional options for retakes will be in Gruel; we will map those out later.
Due Monday

Completed test correction forms (including the crucial parent signature!) brought to class on Monday, January 14, will receive one candy point!

News for Thursday, January 10

Today you took the Negative Integers Unit test (unless you are Naomi or Emmett, in which case you were absent) and WOW, I am impressed!  Overall, you have the best class average scores for the first time through this test (and it is the same test) I can remember.  GREAT job at tackling this difficult concept; you are putting together all of the pieces that you need to be successful math students in the future.
Please go to TeacherEase where I have posted your individual scores.

In class on Friday we will have SoEmo, test correction time, and then Frodoland.  Please come prepared with whatever you agreed upon to bring to your group.

Again, congratulations on some superb test taking!
Mo ;-)

Homework for Wednesday, January 9

Assignment: Student Choice - (pre-test)
You chose an assignment today to help you prepare for the test tomorrow.  Please note that the important thing is that you use it to prepare: be sure to check over your answers (key on the back) and understand your mistakes.
*If you selected the Comprehensive Review of Negatives worksheet and you aren't sure you understand your mistakes, please click on this link and you will not only find a copy of the worksheet and a key, you will also find a breakdown of the different answers.  I want you to understand why you missed something ... was it a step? an arithmetic error? a value?  Check it out!
Note - #6, the median, should be 2, not 4.
#8, the mean, should read negative 11, not positive.
ALSO - #11 on the answer key of this worksheet is incorrect and should be 135.
See the real answers and reasons on the above link.
You can thank Alina C. for alerting me to most of these errors and  you can give David a hard time for making the key for me!  To be fair, he made it in about 3 minutes, but you can see that we teachers still make mistakes too, especially when we rush.  Sorry for any confusion this has caused.  Mo ;-)
*If you selected Integer Sums and Differences, you can follow this more general link on how to add and subtract negatives using my cowboy method.
*If you selected Even More Ops with Negatives, you will find a detailed explanation of each problem with the key on your worksheet.
*If you selected Quizlet, you should be sure to find someone (like your wonderful parents or an older sibling) who can help you understand any mistakes you make there too.
Other notes:
*Warm up on the Quizlet basic practice set.  Remember that Claire is hoping that no one will beat the record time she has set!  Seriously, this is a great warm-up for the bigger stuff.
*Experiment with eating something wonderful while you work on your math tonight that you can also snack on during the test tomorrow.  It's a fun idea and certainly can't hurt!  We will have people who try this experiment report to us on Friday how they felt it worked.
*Get your rest tonight.  If you are tired, your brain will have a harder time focusing.
If you forgot your worksheet and/or don't want to do Quizlet after all, there is a copy of the 2nd Comprehensive Review sheet (and it's answer key) HERE.

Homework for Tuesday, January 8

Assignment: Comprehensive Review ws or Adding & Subtracting Decimals
I let you choose which assignment you wanted between these two today, so hopefully you are feeling super-prepared for the test on Thursday.  Make sure that if you do have any questions after completing your worksheet that you ask me in class tomorrow!  Like I stressed in class today, you want using negatives to be a step you don't have to ponder for a long time and practice will help you make that transition more quickly.
*Use Quizlet if you have a moment to work on your speed (using the speed set) and building your brain-muscle memory.
*Quizlet also has a "regular" addition and subtraction set as well as negative order of operations.  No one says you cannot practice these tonight ... in fact, it's good for you.  (like spinach, brocolli, and blueberries!)
Copies of the worksheets are below:

Homework for Monday, January 7

Assignment:  Negative Pre-test Study Worksheet
*Llewyn pointed out to me after school that onr of the problem sets does not have the correct solution listed.  Drats!  I printed off the wrong version.  :(  Please use "d) none of the above" and give the correct answer.  Thanks!
This assignment should give you an indication of how prepared you are for Thursday's test.  It will also help you determine what kind of homework you select for Wednesday's "choice" homework.
First, solve the equation yourself.
Second, select the correct answer from the set.
Third, write in your own words the "rule" you used to arrive at your answer.
*Note that while this is in your own words, I do expect you to tell me something other than, "because 2 + (-3) is -1.
*You can definitely talk about cowboys for addition and subtraction problems.
*For the order of operation equations, let me know the order of steps you followed; how you regrouped, what you did first, etc.
There is a copy of this worksheet: HERE
Due Tuesday so I can get it back to you prior to the test!

Homework for Thursday, January 3

Assignment:  Order of Operations with Negatives
It really is time to use negatives within the order of operations.  I know that this seemed overwhelming to some of you in class today, but you WILL get it.  Just write out the steps, line by line ... think of it as simplifying the equation as you work down until it is as simple as 2 - 5.  Remember: don't look back at the original problem; trust where you are in your work (which is why you have it written down).
*For more help remembering the order of operations, check the Mo'help tab where you will find handy links.
*Please continue to practice your addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division separately.  Most of you did VERY well on the pop quiz today, but practice will still help.
*My Quizlet page has some nice options for you and I'm still looking for a speed champion in the new negatives speed set!
*This is a differentiated assignment, so there are not extra copies available here.  If you do contact me via email (or "comment" on this post), then I can send you a copy of yours.
Due Friday

The computation section of the negative integers test will be next Thursday, January 10.  The test will include addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.  There will be decimals, there will be absolute value brackets, and you will be expected to use everything within the order of operations.
The application section of this unit will be the following week.

Homework for Wednesday, January 2

Assignment: Multiplication and Division with negatives (differentiated)
The rules are simple in equations with only two numbers:
*if both numbers have the same sign, the answer is going to be positive
*if both numbers have different signs, the answer is going to be negative
It really is that simple!
Get used to these two number equations because tomorrow we will be adding more numbers in ...
