Homework for Thursday, January 29

Assignment:  Fraction Questions
Honesty and insightfulness!  Share your thoughts and knowledge with me.  This will be graded on 1) completion and 2) the time and energy you put into your answers.  Spending a total of 15 minutes is probably a worthy goal.  It is not necessary to spend more time uniless you have a lot to say, but spending less time won't show me that you have taken the time to think about the questions.
Due Friday

QUIZ BOWL!!!!!!  See you there ;-)

Homework for Wednesday, January 28

AssignmentYour Bingo Card - bingo grids are only available in class
Get ready to become speedy with equivalent fractions!
It's one thing to be able to name an equivalent fraction and it's quite another to do it quickly and with confidence.  Our Bingo games will help you achieve those goals while playing; practice builds skills.
This assignment is graded on effort and accurately following these guidelines:
*You must color ALL circles.
*You must list ALL equivalencies up to a denominator of 12 for the colored fraction.
*You may only color one whole twice (but it is not required to do it twice) and you do not need to list the equivalencies for the whole.
Due: Thursday
You will not be eligible to play on Monday unless you have your card in by Thursday, January 29, or are absent on these days.

Differentiation for our fractions unit is huge.  Students should look for ways to stretch their understandings and use them in context while learning all of the conventions for using fractions.  The opportunity for enrichments are endless!

Homework for Tuesday, January 27

Assignment:  Battleship Questions 2
I've had a lot of you asking some good questions about these questions!  First of all, the more you write, the better off you are.  I want to know what you've learned, how you are thinking, what is beginning to make sense, and what is still a distant idea.  There are "wrong" answers if you don't test some of the questions, but if I can see your thought processes then I will know where you are struggling.  So write!
1) You need to be done playing both battleship games with your partner.
2) You MAY consult with your partner or classmates, but your assignment and answers are ultimately your own.
3) Testing your ideas helps ... get any piece of graph paper and see what you can figure out.
I cannot stress enough that "I don't know" or, "yes" are not acceptable answers.  Not trying means I can't give you credit.  Talk to me!
Due ... Wednesday, but if you need to come to Math Lunch tomorrow to talk about it, aim for Thursday.  ;-)

Homework for Monday, 1/26

Assignment:  Fractions Take-Home Pre-Quiz
Guess what?  Google docs does not accept whatever I am using to put fractions onto this worksheet, so I cannot directly upload or paste in a copy of this assignment.  If you are lucky I will have time to recreate it tonight ... but if not, you will need to get another copy in class tomorrow.
*Read the sheet thoroughly and be thorough in your thoughts and explanations to me.  This is to set you up for this entire unit, so you want to be sure I know where you are coming from.  ;-)
*I DO expect you to find out how to do these problems if you do not remember or (even) have not yet learned.  Don't worry, you will still get to learn what you don't actually know how to do or understand, but I want you to have the framework of where you are beginning from.
Your positive mindset:  What do I know?  What don't I know?  What is my next question?!

Homework for Wednesday, January 21

Assignment:  Pre-Test Choice
The biggest thing about pre-test choice assignments is that you have three steps to them:  1) do the work, 2) correct your work and 3) make any corrections.  I need to see all of these steps for you to get full credit.
LATE pre-test choice assignments will also only receive half credit ... the point of the pre-test choice is that it happens pre-test, eh?
Options and their keys are are follows:
*Comprehensive Review 2
*Even More Ops with Negs
*Quizlet (comp sets, not apps)
Due Thursday, before the test, marked and corrected!

Homework for Tuesday, January 20

Assignment:  Order of Ops Choice
Today you selected a negative order of operations worksheet.  Be sure to solve your equations in order of operations order working down the page.  Write out your steps; they are especially important when you add in the complication of negatives!
A) pg 29 (there is no copy of this worksheet online)
B) pg 30 (there is no copy of this worksheet online)
C) Heckuva Negative Ops
D) Ops with Negatives and Exponents
Q) Quizlet!  Please practice the order of ops with negatives set in "Learn" mode.
Any additional negative Quizlet sets practiced can be turned in for credit, but the minimum is to complete an order of operations set.

Test Prep and Corrections

This coming Thursday, January 22, we will be having the computation portion of the negative numbers unit.  This is going to be tricky for a lot of you who are new to negative numbers, but it is the challenge of being expected to master two years of these math skills in one.  So it's time to see where you are ... there will be simple equations and order of operations on the test.
So what can you do now?
Quizlet - practice.  Do you want to practice on your own?  Worksheets have their drawbacks in that you have to wait to see how you did.  Quizlet gives you immediate feedback and you can practice as much as you want to.  I cannot stress enough how much this kind of practice can help you.  Now that we are JUST looking at how to read equations, this is the most effective way to practice.  Any of the sets with "negatives" in the title are game.
In class - We will have two days in class to practice and you NEED to ask questions if you have them.  Commit to knowing how to do each equation and understand what you are doing.  On the test you are flying solo and you want to feel in control.
Homework - Select homework that helps you practice what you need to practice most.  These choices are yours to make; you know your strengths and weaknesses, so select those that will make you stronger.
Redo - Go back over problems you missed on previous papers and analyze your mistakes.  Redo those problems and commit to not making those mistakes again.
Math Lunch - I have suggested this to many of you, but last week not a single person showed up for math lunch.  Hmmm.  I know that breaks are super important, but basically we eat together (which you need to do anyway) while I go over questions and examples and then you can head out for exercise.  I'm not being subtle here:  many of you NEED to come to math lunch.  Please!
Hang in there!  This is a tough unit, mostly because it's new to the huge majority of you.  You'll get it if you take the time and effort to learn it.  Negatives are here to stay, so let them know who's boss.  ;-)

Application Test Corrections:  Be sure to follow the format on the sheet for full credit.  Identify the skill you struggled with as per the examples in the "skill" column.  Identify your mistake specifically (3 + 5 = 9 or I made -9 = +9) and correct the problem.  I get picker on your steps not less pickier, so fill in this form completely!  It's the best way to understand your mistakes and practice doing it correctly.
Remember that these corrections are Due Tuesday with parent signature for a candy point on Tuesday, January 20.

Retests for the Application portion of negatives will NOT be this week, so set that aside after you finish your corrections (and hand them in).  Once we've completed the computation portion of this unit, I will schedule both retests depending on the amount of interest.

Enjoy the day in service,
Mo ;-)

Homework for Wednesday, January 14

Assignment:  Pre-Application-Test Choice
We covered four options today which were:
*Quizlet - options include all negative problem sets; there IS a Real Life Negs set too.
*Write 6 “Real Life” application problems for Quizlet.
The problems must include several different operations and may include more than one operation.  Problems involving central tendencies may be used as well. The problems should not be “trick” problems, but can be “tricky.”  None of the problems should have the same numerical answer that already exists in the current “Real Life Negatives” problem set.  Please visit Quizlet to determine the kind of problems that would belong in this set and to see what answers have already been used.
Your assignment should include the problems in written format (for possible selection to Quizlet!), the equations , your work, and the correct solutions. You need to have a parent or otherwise capable mathematician check your answers and sign-off on them as well.  Typing out your answers or handing them in electronically (like an email attachment) is also acceptable.
*Negative Subtraction worksheet
Many of you felt good about the application section of the test tomorrow and chose instead to work on your negative subtraction. Unfortunately I do not have a copy of this worksheet as it is from a workbook.
Many of you felt good about the application section of the test tomorrow and chose instead to work on your Order of Operations. The title of the assignment is a copy of the worksheet.
Due Thursday

Come prepared as your best, relaxed self tomorrow! The answer to the phone question is "No, you may not use your phone for music." Not only are phones off-limits during school hours, but there is no way of knowing what you are listening to (meaning the math professor at the University telling you how to do the problems which, while a very complex feat, would not be likely!). So bring your music IF it will help you relax, but don't bring your phones.

Homework for Tuesday, January 13

Assignment:  Real Life Negatives - E
Have you ever wondered how "real life" these problems are?  Well, if you live in an imaginary world, they are as real as it gets.  ;-)
*Be sure to read each problem carefully and answer what it is asking you.
*Be sure to organize your work on your page so I can see what you did; in other words, show your work.
*These do not have to be written as equations tonight, but do keep in mind that you will be asked to write equations for some problems on the test.  That means an equation with an equal sign; be prepared!
Due Wednesday
*Application test is this Thursday!

Homework for Monday, January 12

Assignment:  Student Choice - Subtraction or Ops

It's going to take me a while to see which of these choices I have options online for, but I will do my best to get them up before the Ducks play tonight at 5:30.
GO DUCKS!

If you lost yours, here are the options, just click on the title.  If you've changed your mind, please just pick a new one; click on the title, eh?  And if there is no link, assume there is no link and you will need to select another one.  These are, theoretically, in the order of difficulty from most basic to most complex.
A) Positive and Negative Numbers 4
B) Subtracting Integers 2
C) Adding & Subtracting Integers - B
D) No one picked this (Negative Decimals)
E) Order of Ops pg 29
F) Let's Practice Ops with Negs
Also available for practice, in addition to your worksheet, are Quizlet pages.  Your options at this time are:  Real Life Negs, Negs Add & Sub Basics, Negatives Addition and Subtraction, Negative Order of Ops, and Negative Integer Review.

Assignment:  Negs Comprehensive Review A
This assignment should help you know further how comfortable you are with all of these ideas combined.  Getting an assignment that is all addition or all subtraction or all multiplication is much easier than getting them all mixed together on one page.  It's like identifying the vegetables in a stew after it's been cooked and put into your bowl, eh?
What's in there?!?!?
So take each problem back apart so that you recognize it... like the veggies in your stew.  (who knew there was a banana in there?!?!?)
vegetables%20cartoon
Recognizable Veggies
*Solve each side of problems 2 - 6 and show me those answers.  This is also called, "showing your work."
*Remember that absolute value brackets are just brackets.  Solve within them first, then "free" the result from the brackets and continue.  Absolute value brackets are a step in the order of operations and why we need to think of them as grouping symbols, not parentheses.
You have all of the tools, just take your time and show your work ... and the Mo'Help tab has more hints on how to deal with the operations and absolute value if you need it.  ;-)
Due Friday
*reminder - completing my Quizlet options with negatives is not only good practice for getting this into your long term memory, it's also worth points if you complete the Learn mode and turn it in for credit.  Besides, it would also be cool to be the fastest champion in Space Race, eh?

Assignment for Wednesday, January 7

Assignment:   Negatives Subtraction Choice
We're all subtracting today!
You will be completing only one of these assignments today, but if you would like to do Quizlet also you can get additional credit (banking those points!) for the options I have listed as well.
Your choices are as follows:
B) Sub Integers pg 73
M) Sub Integers 2
L) 1.6 Practice ws  (no link)
F) Quizlet - Negative Add and Sub Basics
                            or
                 - Negative Addition and Subtraction (more difficult)
Clara, Helen, Easton, and Veer - you should all complete option B above.  If you do not understand what to do, I can fill you in tomorrow.

Homework for Tuesday, January 6

Happy Birthday to me!
*this is my excuse for this late post; we went out to dinner!

You have two assignments (of sorts) tonight.
1) Pop-Quiz Corrections
If you missed any on the quiz today you are to identify and correct your mistakes directly ON your quiz.  This is worth 2 points: complete/incomplete/not complete.
Regardless of your score you need to hand in your pop-quiz tomorrow AND indicate whether or not you want me to count your score in your grade.  Your choice!  Please write your decision beneath your name.
2) Battleship Grid
Hopefully you took home the notes you took in class today for this assignment.  If not, see if you can get the general idea from the image below ... it's not perfect, but it is a visual.  ;-)
*If you didn't get a copy of the assignment sheet, you will have to get one tomorrow.
*Make a key - blue (top), green (left), orange (right), yellow (bottom).
*Draw a game grid.  You will essentially make a large "X" on your grid and color it according to the key above.  To draw your "X"  you will make two diagonal lines.
-Each line MUST go through the middle of each box (cutting it in half), but may begin at any point and run diagonally in one direction.
-The second line goes on the other diagonal, but also must cut each box in half on its way.
-Put it anywhere you want on the grid following the directions for drawing your lines.
-When you are done, it should look like a lopsided X, colored fantastically. (ignore the white spaces on my example; you do need to color up to the line)
There really isn't anything else to do!  No points need be identified, nothing with the "A, B, C" coordinates, nothing.  Just make your "X" and color!
Due Wednesday

Monday, January 5, 2015

Assignment:  Real Life Negatives D
*Complete this assignment carefully ... there may be extra information or you may be starting equations from some place other than zero.  If you don't read the problems, you may miss a detail!
*Repeat: this assignment is tricky! You can figure them out. ;-)
*The title of the assignment is a direct link to a copy.
