Homework for Tuesday, January 31

Assignment: Fraction Choice
Ideally, you will be completing a fraction set on Quizlet tonight.
*Please work until you get 10 correct in "Learn" mode.
*Please print the page, bring in your work, send me an email, or have a signed parent note.  When you forget these things it goes down as "incomplete" in TeacherEase.  Please complete the loop!
*Please choose from these sets:
-Fraction Addition
-Fraction Subtraction
-Fraction Multiplication
-Fraction Division
-Fraction Mixed Review
-Fraction Applications.
Complete the set that you most need to work on!  This is test prep, so practice what you actually need most to practice.
If you've decided you prefer a worksheet, THIS is the link to a mixed review (all operations).  You only need to do the problems in columns a, b, and c.  This assignment is graded on the number of complete answers you get out of those .

Homework for Monday, January 30

Assignment: Application Problems Choice
*assignment titles are links to the worksheets
Today you were to select one of the sets of problems that you felt you needed to work on.  Your choices were:
Add/Sub - What to "do" is easier to determine, but if you are still struggling with adding and subtracting, this one is a good choice.
Mult/Div - Solving the equations is easier, but are you reading the problem correctly?  Knowing when to multiply (you need to determine the "of" something) and when to divide (you're wondering how many of something fits into another thing or how to divide up something you know the whole of) is the really tricky part.  See, it was even tricky writing that!
All Four Operations - This is the most complex worksheet because all four operations and skills are involved.  Draw yourself a picture if needed ... what are they asking you to determine?  Will the operation you want to use give you that answer?  This worksheet is tricky, but not if you understand the question.  ;-)

Assignment: Fraction Apps Choice - add/sub
There are three possible assignments today for you to choose from.  Please select the one that best fits your needs for practice at this time.  Also, feel free to switch assignments if the one you selected at school today doesn't feel like what you need.
*I will post the links as I complete them. ;-)
B = Basics - practice adding and subtracting in application
N = Nasty Nedra - using fractions in context with more confusing information
P = Problem Solving - more practice with visual problem solving; this one includes fractions!

Assignment:  Adding Fractions Choice
Today you could select from one of three assignments,  There is currently only a link for the Basics option.
B = Basics:  addition of fractions with unlike denoinators
M = Mixed: addition of mixed numbers
X = Complex: addition of multiple mixed numbers
Be careful to add correctly, considering what your wholes are and how to make your pizza slices equal, just like we did in class today.  ;-)

Homework for Monday, January 23

Assignment: Writing Directions - Adding Fractions
Tonight you are to write directions for teaching someone how to add fractions. You will be graded on your thoroughness in completing the following:
Assume they need the very basics – although they do know what numbers are and how to use them.
*Make sure you cover what a fraction is; a picture might help. Assume this is new news.
*Explain what the top and the bottom of the fraction represent (not the vocabulary part, the actual thing). You do not have permission to use the words numerator, denominator, or factor.
*Finish with an equation that represents your example.
This must be a lesson that is freestanding. What I mean by that is that anyone should be able to pick up your directions and teach anyone to add fractions. You can imagine yourself teaching a group of first graders, younger sibling, or simply someone who does not know how to add fractions. Perhaps you are writing instructions for a textbook? Figure out a scenario and go with it.
Finally, come up with a way for your student to remember how to add fractions … what is the key to knowing the different steps when multiplying versus adding? Why are the steps so very different?
I recommend reading your directions aloud to someone who is pretending to (or actually?) learn fractions. This will test the accuracy of your words and alert you if you've left something important out.
Please write up your instructions neatly or type them up to turn in.

Assignment: Fraction Division or Multiplication Choice
Continued practice with fraction division or multiplication as your needs require.
All answers need to be in simplest terms (with no remaining common factors other than "1"); answers may be given as mixed or improper fractions.
Division - Difficult Level
(this is the only option I have available online at this time)

Homework for Tuesday, January 17

Assignment: Draw Four, Check One (the title is the link)
Draw Four:  First complete the four problems using VISUAL models on ANOTHER sheet of paper.  We have practiced this skill, so the expectation is that you will be able to represent these stories in this way.  Only after you have a visual should you apply the numbers and come up with your answer.
Ultimately you should have an answer, but its correctness is only half of the value of the points.  The other half is showing me how you worked through the problems using your visual cues.
Check One:  Select one of the problems to have an older sibling, neighbor, or adult solve ... essentially a non-NOVA person.  Give them the problem (and a piece of paper?) and encourage them to show you all of their work so you can see their thinking.  Feel free to ask questions afterwards if you do not understand what they did, but in general you should be able to tell.
Then your task is to analyze their work.  Did they work it out in the same way as you did or differently?  Were there common elements between your work?  Did they use all numbers or did they represent it visually too?  Did you even get the same answer?!?!  Write at least three sentences of your observations; you may write these directly on their work page.
P.S. You can give the problems out to multiple people if you want to, just to see how they will do.  ;-)
Have fun!

Homework for Thursday, January 12

Assignment:  Multiplication of Fractions Choice #2
Your choice of the following ... I only have one option currently available as a link.
a) worksheet 23 -  link!
    *multiplying mixed numerals, mid-level difficulty
b) worksheet 31 - (even-numbered problems only)
*multiplying larger mixed numerals with a few applications, higher-level difficulty
c) worksheet 45 -
*multiplying fractions and mixed numerals, simplest level
You may simplify before you solve the equations before or after, but make sure that all of your answers are in simplest form!  Practice both, this is the important part.  ;-)

Homework for Wednesday, January 11

Assignment: Greatest Common Factor - Link!
*For the first sets of numbers (1 - 3), list the factors in the way you know how.
*For finding the prime factorization (4 - 6), you will build a factor tree like we did in class and list the prime factorization.  (Example: 12's prime factorization is 2 x 2 x 3 or 2 squared x 3)
Next explore ... do you know what the GCF for the two given numbers are?  What do the prime factorizations of the two given numbers have in common?  Does that give you the GCF somehow?
*For problems 7 - 8, you should look for connections between GCFs and the tree problem.
*For the patterns, find the number and make your explanation short and sweet ... but accurate.  Writing the pattern as a variable equation is perfect if you want to try it out!

Homework for Tuesday, January 10

Assignment:  Quizlet - Speed Fractions
Select one set of the following fraction sets on my Quizlet page to practice in Gravity mode for 5 minutes altogether.
After you select Gravity but before you begin play you will be asked what you want to start with.  Select "definition."
-You may practice any of the following sets, but keep in mind they are not organized together unless you have created a folder specifically for them.  Options all have "fraction" in their title and include sets of:
*Simplifying
*Fractions: Renaming Mixed to Improper
*Fractions: Renaming Improper to Mixed
*Fraction Factors
-When you have completed your 5 minutes of speed practice, you may either select "print," bring a parent note, or send me an email letting me know you have completed this assignment.
-If you are one of those people who have forgotten your account name, please ask someone (including me) to scan the list for something that you might have chosen.  You can then send Quizlet an "I forgot my password" notice and get back in.  People having multiple accounts really bogs down the time it takes me to go through the list!
-This is a pass/no pass assignment, so please put solid effort into it for your own benefit.

Homework for Monday, January 9

Assignment: Multiplying Fractions and Simplifying
Today you had a choice of assignments:
1) Stay on Track deals with simple fractions - Copy of this assignment is HERE.
2) Robot Rules has whole numbers and mixed numbers included.
We also practiced simplifying in class today before OR after you solve the equation.  Try it out both ways tonight and see what you like.  We will certainly review this again in class.
Thanks for being so on task during the super quick classes today!

Homework for Thursday, January 5

Assignment: Bingo Card
Today you received your Fraction Bingo cards.  Unfortunately there are no copies of this assignment online, so you will need to pick up your card the next time you come to class.  Notes for this assignment are:
*Fraction Cards must be colored neatly.
*Your choice of what fraction to color each circle is yours, but ...
*You may color no more than two circles as wholes and ...
*All equivalent fractions for your choice, up to a denominator of 12, must also be written next to or in your circles.  Examples:  2/5 is equivalent to 4/10 (and vice versa).  1/3 is equivalent to 2/6 to 3/9 to 4/12 (all must be listed).  1/7 has no equivalent with a denominator of 12 or less.
Be sure to count the circles carefully; there are divisions from one whole to twelfths.
Due on Friday, January 6 so we can get to playing Bingo asap!

Homework for Wednesday, January 4

Assignment: Take-Home Fractions Pre-Quiz
(for those of you needing the online copy, we are only completing the first side of this worksheet at this time)
I want to repeat the most important thing about this assignment here first: this is to communicate with me your familiarity and comfort with fractions.  Ask for help, but it will be graded on your completion of the assignment, not your accuracy.  Having said that ...
*Plan to spend no more than 20 minutes on this, but it should take you at least 10, even if you know it all.  If you want to spend more because you are having fun and enjoy the work, please do ... but it is not required if you are struggling.
*You may opt to try the problems yourself using what you know or ask someone for help.  In either case, be honest about where you are in these skills.
*Ultimately you may write, "I don't know," on some of the problems, but your entire pre-quiz should not consist of that statement.  Remember, if you are spending at least 10 minutes on the entire quiz, you can put the work in to do at least some of these skills.  Picking and choosing where you put your efforts in is fine.
*This pre-quiz covers 90% of what this entire fraction unit entails.  Once you've completed it, you will know what you have left to learn this month.  This information is important for me to know too.  It won't be shared in class, it's just between us, so don't be afraid to admit what you do not know.

Homework for Tuesday, January 3

Assignment: Test Corrections
Test corrections for math may be different from your other classes ... please note below:
a) This is an assignment.  You are to identify (specifically) and correct any of your mistakes.  You will receive a grade in TeacherEase for the assignment "Test Corrections."
b) Your grade for this assignment is based on the number of corrections you make correctly.  If you have two errors and correct only one of them, your grade will be 50%.  If you have 3 errors and correct only two of them, your grade will be 67%.  If you made no errors and do not turn in this worksheet your grade for this assignment will be 0%.
c) "Reasons" for missing a problem include arithmetic errors, using the wrong operations, misplacing a decimal, etc.  "Reasons" do not include, "I made a mistake," "I did it wrong," or "I forgot how to do it."  Please be specific and identify where you made your mistake, then do that thing correctly.
d) This work does NOT affect your test score whatsoever.  The retest, should you elect to take it, affects your test score.
e) Note that I changed the numbering of the test corrections (and retest) to correctly reflect our counting system.  For whatever reason I left out #6, it is there in your imagination now.  There are 16 questions on the test - 5 in the first section, 6 in the second, and 5 in the third.
f) If you elect to retest, you may choose one, two, or all three of the sections to retest.  There is no need to retake a section you scored 100% on.  You will identify on the test corrections sheet which sections, if any, you want to retest.  Addition & subtraction are section 1, multiplication and division are section 2, and the applications with Kyle and Mavis are section 3.  Yes, if you retake a section you retake that entire section regardless of which problems you missed.
Due Wednesday
*Jonah & Eliana, if you have someone pick up your test for you then you can complete this assignment at home.  If you don't, you can do it when you come back.
