Homework for Wednesday, May 29

Assignment: Math?
You are to respond to two questions today regarding our activity "producing" and "selling" colored blocks. As usual, I am looking at the depth of your thinking, so focus on sharing your thoughts not on being "right."
And hey, you can always ask the opinion of a wise elder!
1) How many workers do you think is the ideal number of workers for this activity and WHY? How many workers do you think your team should hire next time?
2) When negotiating for changes in the guidelines (costs, etc.)  for this activity, what do you think the class should focus on negotiating for? WHY? What changes do you think will have the biggest impact, but also, which choices do you believe are the fairest for all parties?

Homework for Tuesday, May 28

Create a paper airplane
This is an effort based grade based upon:
*you must use a full, single sheet of 8 1/2 x 11 copy paper.  It can definitely be colored, but it cannot be "construction" paper.  I do have paper for you if you need, but first check on the back table of room one.
*you may cut your plane to make flaps.
*you may not add anything else to your plane, including weights.
*you may use clear Scotch tape or glue only, but not so much that it serves as extra weight.
*you may not use any other kind of tape.
*you should decorate your plane, including your name.
*you should spend more than 4 minutes creating your plane and it should look like you did. Look on the internet, ask someone, test it out. This IS your plane for the duration of this unit, so do a good job of it.
*you should not build your plane in carpool because it won't be "effortful" enough ... and I know what effort looks like.
When you bring your plane to school, please park your plane in your room #1 airplane hangar so that it doesn't get squished or bent in any way.
-Please do not fly them in the classroom or the hallways.
-Respect all planes; do not touch or mess with anyone else's plane.
THANKS!  Fasten your seatbelts and prepare for flight.

Assignment: Quizlet!
Keep track of your work and answer 10 questions correctly.
This is for you, beautiful students, and you only short-change yourself if you don't take advantage of this simple opportunity to study for the test.
You may send me a screenshot (the fastest route), send me an email with your study set and score, or write me a note with your study set and score.
I am still working on a probability set. Please select from:
RPPP Review, Percent Conversions - decimals and fractions, Proportion Applications, Sven's Proportion problems, What-is-of Percent Problems.

Homework for Wednesday, May 15

Assignment: Probability Observations
There is no link to this assignment because you can do it on any paper.
You have the data that you must reference in your answer to #1.
There are or "right" or "wrong" answers to these questions, but you will be assessed on the depth of your responses and how well you understand probability in these instances.
You may hand write or type your answers, just be sure to attach your data too!
#1) Discuss how probability was represented in the data you collected from the game in class today. You may compare your data with your partner's data or combine the data together. You might even try adding more dice rolls to increase your sample size. Whatever you do, be clear about what you did and what you see as the relationship between theory and the actual experimental data you have collected.
#2) Discuss any game involving two or more dice and how probability fits into game play.
How is the game set up to consider the probability of dice rolls? Is it? How might you determine your own strategy knowing the probability of the different rolls? Would it help a lot or a little? Are the rewards for getting a higher probability roll big or small? For example, if rolling double sixes (a 1:36 chance) would you get a bigger pay-off in the game than rolling a 7? Or is it worse to roll those kinds of numbers as in the Snake Eyes game we played in class today.
Etc. These are just some ways you might think about the game you are examining tonight. Come up with your own observations too!!
Game Suggestions: Settlers of Catan, Risk, Yahtzee, Monopoly, Bunco, Parcheesi, Greed or 10,000.

Feel free to change levels if you are not happy with the choice you made in class. The important thing is that you are ready for the test in a week!

Homework for Monday, May 13

Assignment: Taking Chances - Link!
*Make sure you complete the table as directed, then USE it to answer the questions.
- you are listing ALL of the possible outcomes of rolling two dice ... be organized and you will end up with 6 possibilities.
*We went over how to read the questions in class, but as a refresher: P = "the probability of," and the parenthesis is the "problem" you are finding the number of outcomes for.
*Remember to write your answers as fractions 5/36 or ratios 5:36, etc.
(5 would equal the number of times it would happen out of 36 rolls)

Utilities!

Hello all,
I have had several requests for the Utilities worksheet since, apparently, I never posted it (although it is on the front assignment board ...)
In any case,  here it is, front and center and downloadable! ;-)

Homework for Thursday, May 9

Assignment: Flower Power - Link!
Use the table and proportions to organize your work.
There are only 7 questions on this page, but three of them are complex!  Take your time, think about them carefully, and don't be afraid when you realize they're not simple.  Work through it until you understand what you are doing.
#5 and #6: These can also be solved as two-step problems ... figure out what you know, use your labels, and it's okay if you don't get the answer in one step.
#7: There is no redo option for this question. Both parts, the "yes" or "no" and the "why" or "why not" must be completely explained. I will be picky about your reasoning!
Due Friday

Folders are due Monday, May 9!!!!

Homework for Wednesday, May 8

Assignment: Your Strategy
Write out what you believe is the best strategy for the "movie" trailer we watched today. Keep in mind that theory and actual results are two different things ... for a reason. So, how are you going to place your beans and why are you choosing those spots? What do you think even if you have no idea what the end of the movie is going to be ... you think something, right?
Remember to pencil sketch in an X where you will be placing your beans during class using the grid that we used in class.
Then we'll see how the dice roll!
*Anyone without completed homework (by Friday) will be disqualified from Monday's game.
Due Thursday

Homework for Tuesday, May 7

Assignment: Proportion Applications A or B
Tonight you will use the same format we use for solving verbal percent equations to solve these proportion problems. Instead of "What-is-of" though, you use labels to find the missing variable. I gave examples in class, but you can use the Mo'Help tab of this blog to find my online explanation.
*All problems should show how you set up the proportion, with labels, before you solve it.
Option A - Supermarket Math: Link!
These are straight-forward problems: set up the proportion, then solve by multiplying on the diagonal first, then divide.
Option B - The Riding Stable: Link!
Some of these are two-step equations and you will need to solve part of the problem before you can move forward ... but both steps are set up proportionally. Label carefully! You may use fractions or convert to decimals if you'd prefer.

Homework for Monday, May 6

Final Folder Assignment: Reflections on a Life - Link!
The main advice I have for you here is to be thorough in your reflections. Explain your responses and you will be good to go. I'm not judging your answers, in other words, just curious about what insights you gained from this "average American" experience.
You may handwrite or type your responses.
*These are due in your folders, next Monday
FOLDERS ARE DUE: Monday, May 13, at the beginning of your period for full credit.
