October 8 - detailed directions for today's assignment in Quizlet!

Quizlet Details:
It can be tricky to navigate Quizlet until you get used to its quirkiness. Do not despair!
Here are the details reviewed as promised.

1) Make sure you are in our math class; this option is at the left as "classes."
2) Alphabetize the list of assignments in our classroom which is an option above the list.
*you can create and name folders if that's easier!
3) Scroll to the "Ns" for Negative number sets.
4) Select either Negatives Add and Sub Basics or Practice
*these are the only two options today!
5) Practice through learn, gravity, or any method you want. You may use the resource sheet if you want to while studying. This is optional, but why not feel ready before you do the assignment?
6) The Assignment: Select "Test"
    * go to Options on the bottom left
*select "Write" (only), Term, and 15 questions.
7) Complete the test without help! This is to test how you are doing, not to give you a grade for your score.
8) Complete the form in the Google Classroom including your score.
9) Submit!

Due Friday morning

Homework for October 6

 Assignment: Verbal Expressions

Just a reminder that the sheet (key) I gave you access to in class will help you as you fill out this worksheet. I have added a copy to the resources tab in case you lost access to it.

I also added some of my own verbal elaborations!

This assignment is available in our Google Classroom.

Assignment for Monday, September 28

 Monday: Mystery Picture!

This assignment helps you practice graphing coordinate points with a picture result at the end ... if you do it correctly! Be accurate. It's like shooting a basket: it only counts if you make it!

Tips:

*x is always the first number in the pair, y is always the second.

*you always begin at 0 and go to the mountain (left or right) before you climb it (up or down)

*be accurate! Put your points on the intersections and connect the points with your ruler.

*all work for this picture will be done on the single sheet of graph paper. The sets will eventually be connected ...

*color when instructed, before you know what the picture is. It makes it better. ;-) You may go back and color more when you are done.

*your picture should look like a picture ... if it does not, go back and try to figure out where you may have made mistakes.

*this assignment is marked as done in the Google Classroom (due Tuesday), then handed in physically when you pick up your next kit this coming Thursday or Friday. Don't forget it!

Enjoy,

Mo ;-)

Assignment for Tuesday, Sept. 22

Assignment: The Ups and Downs of Shopping - in our G.C.

The directions are on this assignment, but here is my advice:
1) Draw yourself a picture that is organized. If you know how to do it digitally, feel free! But you need a picture as your "proof" and that is worth up to 2 points of the assignment value, so make it good! I need to be able to follow your thinking without you there to explain it to me.
2) Think about the word clues they are giving you. They do matter.
3) Work back through your solution by reading the story again to make sure that your answer works with the information.
4) Think about reading it to another family member and showing them how your "proof" works. It's fine!
The answer itself is worth one point if correct. There IS an answer meaning you DO have enough information to answer how many floors the department store has.

 Homework: Negative Addition

There are three levels of homework tonight, your choice of challenge:

Basics - just getting used to this? Practice!

Medium - want to use larger numbers for practicing? Try these!

Big - want some big numbers and some equations to reorganize? This is it!

On my Mo'Help tab of this blog you will find some reviews for how to think about negative numbers. Visualizing what these numbers stand for will help a LOT. Seeing them in equations means that you will need to recreate the visual that works best for you: a number line? cowboys? cards?

You only need to do ONE of these assignments. Once you've completed one, you can delete the other two assignments to make my life easier. Thank you. And this! Explained in 1st period by Mino and typed up for you all here by Lilia:

"If you go to the assignment, on the side of the link to a document attached, there should be an X. If you click that, it will remove the attachment, and it will not be turned in to your teacher.

📚💻🖱

*If you accidentally delete all three assignments, please email Mo for another copy!
Due Tuesday at 8:30 a.m.

Assignment Sept. 17, Hints for thinking about "real" negatives

Assignment: Real Life Negatives - A

Welcome to the "real" world (as real as it gets in these examples) of negative integers.  Today you are to focus on what you are doing not how you write it.
Mo's advice:
*Think about what the numbers represent.  Draw pictures on the page or in your mind, but use your imagination to think about the story behind the question.
*Associate!  These numbers all have values that go in a direction:  towards zero or away from zero. So if you go down the steps at Hogwarts, all of those downward steps represent going DOWN (aka a negative number, fyi) and all of the times you go UP get you higher (a positive direction).  Again, picture the story.
*HOW you solve these problems should be common sense.  I'm not at all concerned how you represent it mathematically, I want to know where you end up: behind the starting point?  above sea level?  above zero?  with less money?  How can you collect (commute and associate) the values of the numbers and use them to come up with an answer?
Think about what you know to be true and then figure out how to get to that point.
EXAMPLES:  each with different answers, yet essentially the same numbers ...
A) If your horse is 7 miles away from Olympia, and runs for 5 miles towards Olympia, rests, then runs 4 more miles in the same direction, he ends up 2 miles PAST Olympia, right?  Right!
B) If your horse is 7 miles away from Olympia, and begins running to Olympia for 5 miles, but realized he forgot his baby horse, so he runs back for 4 miles, he is now  6 miles away from (before) Olympia, right? Try drawing that scenario.
*The rest of it is up to you.  I strongly, strongly recommend drawing yourself a simple scenario and figuring out what it is you want to know.  Don't worry about the negatives or positives, just think about what they represent in the story.  I keep saying this because it is key to your "aha" moment!
*And yes, labels are VERY important ... you MUST fill out the table and label the sets as we practiced in class.
No calculators, you can do these!
Due Friday - Enjoy!  ;-)

Welcome! Fall 2020

Welcome to the 2020 - 2021 school year, the year of the great unknown! Yes, it is finally time to begin our time together and we are going to do it in style.

On this blog you will find assignments, handy links, and resources to supplement what we are doing in our distance classroom. Its primary purpose is to assist my math students and their parents in completing homework at home, so please poke around and get an idea about what things will look like. Typically I update this blog every day, but as of this moment, I am not sure how much extra I will be putting here while distance learning, so we'll see. Primarily I wanted you to know this is a source and to know where to find it.

And if you are still reading (which you should be), it's the ultimate source for trivia I ask in class ... so look around and keep checking back!

I look forward to this school year, whatever it may bring,
Mo ;-)

Distance Update, April 26

Make sure you have checked out the new tabs I've added to my blog!
Resources will give you access to the lessons I've given in case you are having trouble finding them in your GC folder. They are worth reviewing too; we will be testing eventually. You will also find the updated Candy Point list here.
Yo'Life lists the assignments we've had so far in this unit, including the sheets containing the individual information. Again, if you don't like navigating the GC, this might be easier for you to look through.

As you know, it's been a busy week in our household with the chicks hatching! This is the best picture I can get of them ... they are not much for posing, if you know what I mean.

Names: (not in order because this picture is too tough to identify them by, so alphabetical will do it)
Alan, Barbara, Buttercup, Eggo, Hazel, Jane, JuneLin, Kit-Kat, Lucy, and Peggy.
I will include more pictures as they grow!
Mo ;-)

NOVA Distance Update, April 12

Greetings blog followers,
I have moved most of the content you need to our Google Classroom, so I will not be updating this blog until we are back in school.
However ...
I am going to start a "Resource" tab to collect all of the files we have been using in the GC for easier organization and access, including the candy point chart for this spring!
Best wishes and stay healthy,
Mo ;-)

Homework for Thursday, March 19

Assignment: Supermarket Math
The lesson and directions are all in our Google Classroom. Make sure to turn it in by filling out the worksheet in your "assignments" list and then submit it online. If you send it to me via email, then it shows up as missing in the book ... let me know if this is still unclear to you!
Due Friday

Tuesday, March 17, 2020

Homework for Wednesday, March 18

Assignment: Choice!  Proportions A or B
*Link to A (basics)
*Link to B (more difficult)
I'm going to try something new here ... I created an answer key in our Google Classroom and then submitted both worksheets, Proportions A (basics) and Proportions B (more difficult), into the folder. Then, I think, you can fill out the answer key on the assignment sheet and turn it in. If this doesn't work, there are copies of each assignment here, but you will still need to use the answer key that I am supplied there. Whew!
*You should be able to see the directions if you select the "view details" button, but I am also posting them here ...

Here are my expectations: please do the work in the way I am asking you to do, for now: multiply on the diagonal and then divide either straight up or across. The details for this are on the Mo'Help tab of my blog.*Do not use other methods of finding equivalent fractions/ratios/proportions at this time. Learn this algorithm first!*You do not need to turn in your work page, I am trusting you to do it.*Do not use a calculator, I am trusting you.

PLEASE use the "turn in" option for this assignment that is provided when you click on the assignment. Otherwise, it automatically shows up as missing and you will, I think, need to go back and submit it later to make it disappear. (?)
Due Thursday

Here we go! Tuesday, March 17

Welcome! So this is your math class for a bit and it is a new experience for all of
us. I do hope to have some videos, links, and such, but we’re starting gently
today. I plan to develop a rhythm for us that is predictable and manageable.
We will have guided practice with keys and homework without, but as always my
late and redo policies apply. Work for the usual one-day turnaround for your
math assignments and you’ll be fine. Use this blog as a resource and check our
google classroom for updates. All of that practice I had you do reading my instructions
and looking for easter eggs will hopefully pay off here! 😀

I have a lot of cool things to do in this unit, but whether or not I can transfer them
meaningfully to an online experience remains to be seen!
Please give me feedback as we go. Please send me an email if you have
questions and please know that while I will be most quickly responding during
my “office hours” of 10:30 - 12:30, but you can contact me any time.
I will reply as quickly as I can when I’m not working in the yard, cooking, taking
a walk, etc. Use your parents and siblings as resources,
but don’t be afraid to simply explore when I ask you to!

Today's links are to both the instruction sheet
(which includes the above paragraphs) and the assignment sheet itself.
If you have trouble turning them in via our google classroom, just send them
via email until we get things figured out. They should all be in our google
classroom, but my confidence in that is questionable in this moment. Ha!

Update: Monday, March 16

Greetings, students!
I have sent you all an invite to my Google Classroom, but we will see what that means over the course of these next several weeks. I do plan to continue to use my blog, somehow, which might mean linking it to the Google thing ... but that remains to be explored.
As you are patient with me in this new way of sharing math information, I will be patient and clear with you. So don't fret! We can do this together.
I will miss sharing space with you in the classroom, but look forward to when we return to school. Until then, stay tuned and take care!

Homework for Wednesday, March 11

Assignment? Nope ;-)
So, here we are in the limbo of completing the winter trimester and being unsure about when we might be doing our schooling offsite.
Fortunately (?), today was the last day to turn in late assignments, so the homework for the trimester is complete. I'm not saying that I have the backlog all graded, but I'm on it, so don't plan on completing anything else unless you were absent the past two days, as a few of you were.
As for the fractions test, if we complete it on Thursday I still may not count it for the winter trimester since the opportunity for retests in the next week is waning. We'll see, just stay tuned!
And don't let it worry you.
Mo ;-)

Homework for Tuesday, March 10

Assignment: Fraction Packet
*Liam H and Owen, your only option is to complete whichever Quizlet sets will help you prepare for the test; I do not have online copies of the packet ... sorry!
Fraction Packet Instructions -
This is YOUR packet. This packet is intended to provide you with practice in any area that you feel needs practicing. Check over your work … if your answers are incorrect, redo them so that you can see how to find the correct answer. Try the “Challenge/Exploration” problems if you are confident in your fraction accuracy.
Your Responsibilities:
*Work for 10 - 15 minutes.
*Check the answer key and correct your work. The link to the answer key is below.
*Determine if you want to practice more … you may if you want to, but it is not required!
*You do NOT need to attach a note this time.
*You may certainly add notes to your notecard if you realize more would help! Factors, multiples, and general reminders to yourself are all awesome when you are under test pressure.
Due: TURN IN THE PACKET BEFORE THE TEST ON WEDNESDAY… you will not get credit for a packet turned in AFTER the test. This is a “complete” or “incomplete” task.
Relax! You know this stuff …  Mo ;-)

Other Notes:
*Test corrections are Wednesday homework and due Thursday. Late corrections will not receive credit.
*Retests for fractions will be NEXT week. They will not necessarily be available before your conference.
*I think I'm done!!!! Please send me an email if you notice any incorrect answers as I am doing it in speed mode, and, as you know traveling with too much speed is dangerous!

Math Update for Monday, March 9

Hello everyone, I hope your weekend is going well!
I wanted to reassure everyone that due to missing school this Monday, I am moving the fractions math test to Wednesday of this coming week. Therefore we will do our in-class review and "packet" homework on Tuesday. Everything just shifts a day!
Good health and happiness to all,
Mo ;-)

Homework for Thursday, March 5

Assignment: Test Notes Notecard
Yes, I totally understand that many of you "do not need" notes for the test on Tuesday, but that isn't really the point of this assignment ... so read on.
You are to create one 3 x 5 notecard (front and back) of notes, hints, fact tables, definitions, reminders, whatever, that would be good to have available for the fractions test.
You MAY use this notecard during the test.
You will NOT be able to access any other notes during the test.
This is an effort based grade, so even if you don't plan to use the card, make the card a good one that would be useful to someone!
Due Friday
*play participants can turn theirs in on Monday if desired, but notecards will not be accepted after Tuesday.

Wednesday, March 4, 2020

Homework for Thursday, March 4

Assignment: Quizlet - (not optional)
Complete any Fraction set, 10 correct, send email verification or bring a note.
You know what you need ... so practice it!
Due Thursday

Tuesday, March 3, 2020

Homework for Tuesday, March 3

Assignment: Optional!
If you choose to do one of the optional assignments tonight (they are good practice, just not required) then you will only receive credit if it is done TONIGHT.
*Quizlet - Any Fraction set, 10 correct, send email verification or bring a note.
*Bingo Card - Complete a new bingo card! (these are not available online; you had to pick one up from me today. Bring it into class on Wednesday and put it in the inbox.
If you were one of the few absent today, your only option will consequently be Quizlet; just send me the email saying you practiced!
Due WEDNESDAY only

Monday, March 2, 2020

Homework for Monday, March 2

Assignment: Fraction Division Choice
*M - Multi-Skill practice - Link!
Not quite ready for solid division? This worksheet contains simplifying, multiplication, and division problems to practice.
*D - Division Practice - Link!
Practice, but only the basics ... you will need to be able to divide mixed numbers by the test as well.
*D+ - Division Practice - Link!
This one includes division with mixed numbers. Be sure to change TO improper fractions before you flip the second fraction and multiply.
*N - LCMs of Monomials - Link!
This is only for those of you who have been cruising along through the other variable assignments. This is NOT a good assignment to begin with.
Due Tuesday

Thursday, February 27, 2020

Homework for Thursday, February 27

Assignment: Fraction Subtraction Choice
*Feel free to switch assignment choices if you are dissatisfied with the choice you made in class.
I'm calling this first one the choice for those of you feeling "Rusty with Addition." Like it? ;-)
Subtracting Unlike Fractions - Link!
This second assignment is for those of you curious as to how adding fractions works when you have negatives ... I have confidence you will figure it out.
Negative Fractions - Link!
On this worksheet, you need to keep track of your negative "rules" along with your fractions. It looks like an addition worksheet ... but is it?
GCF of Monomials - Link!
If you have completed the prime factorization worksheet, then this is the next step to finding the greatest common factors of monomials using those numbers. If you haven't done that one, feel free to go back through the assignments from this month and print that worksheet instead ... it will count as today's assignment and you can do this one another day.
Due Friday

Wednesday, February 26, 2020

Homework for Wednesday, February 26

Assignment: Applications with Sven - Link!
Today you will use your knowledge of fractions to answer these six problems. Be sure to read the questions carefully and be certain you know what it is asking. Use the sentence cues (where the answer goes) to reinforce that you understand the question and that your answer makes sense.
This is a mixed skillset practice, so using a "draw it" strategy to help your thinking is also strongly recommended.
Due Thursday

Homework for Tuesday, February 25

Assignment: Fraction Addition Choice
*Feel free to switch assignment choices if you are dissatisfied with the choice you made in class. Seriously, you just owe me one assignment, but it's your choice all the way!
I'm calling this first one the choice for those of you feeling "Rusty with Addition." Like it? ;-)
Adding "Regular" Fractions - Link!
This second assignment is for those of you curious as to how adding fractions works when you have negatives ... I have confidence you will figure it out.
Adding Negative Fractions - Link!
Due Wednesday

Homework for Monday, February 24

Assignment: Multiplication Choice
Basics: Fraction Multiplication - Link!
Are you feeling the need to multiply fractions the regular way, making your own decisions about simplifying before or after you work the problems? This worksheet is for you! Do note though that ALL answers must be in simplest form for full credit.
Fraction Multiplication - G: Feeling Good - Link!
Feel confident in your ability to multiply fractions and want to apply cross cancelling on a deeper level? This worksheet has you simplify before you solve at least 4 times, finding either the prime factorization or simply looking for common factors and simplifying those. Either way! At this point, you must fully show me your cancellations so I can make sure you are using them correctly.  ALL answers must be in simplest form for full credit.
*this blog has the Mo'Help tab which has a link to reviewing cross-canceling if you need it.
Fraction Multiplication with Variables - Link!
This worksheet is difficult, especially if you have never simplified or multiplied variables before. Try it ... then switch if you want to, eh? ALL answers must be in simplest form for full credit.
Due Tuesday

Thursday, February 13, 2020

Homework for Thursday, February 13

Assignment: Simplifying ... Choice!
We did lots of work with simplifying today as your math future holds simplifying requirements in all realms of math, from radicals to fractions to variable equations. Yikes! And so it begins.
As always, feel free to select a different one of these assignments if you are unhappy with your earlier choice.
Today you chose from:
*Practice: Link!
Practice what we did today with fractions. Make sure that the largest factor that the numbers share is one at the end of your simplifying.
*Review: Link!
So you have simplified before and you would like to review doing that with mixed numbers and improper fractions? It's not quite explorative, just follow the same rules and use the example I gave you on this sheet. The bottom 3 problems are thus worth 2 each.
*Challenge/Explore: Link!
If you understand simplifying concepts, this shouldn't extend your brain too far. Think through what you know about numbers and variables ... think of their factors and what they have in common.
Due Friday

Wednesday, February 12, 2020

Homework for Wednesday, February 12

Assignment: Networks - Link!
This assignment is to help you think about routes, mapping, and different ways they can be represented. Explore the possibilities ... you can figure these out!
Networks are used for all sorts of things, like for costs and efficiencies.
We will be translating this work into our Frodoland mapping. Think about how using a scale may have helped you track these routes visually rather than be dependent on checking everything numerically.
We will continue to build on these ideas!
*Nodes are the letters, arcs are the lines ... but that's not the question. ;-)
Due Thursday

Monday, February 10, 2020

Homework for Monday, February 10

Assignment: Fraction Choice #1
We are just starting this unit, so begin where you are comfortable and or need review!
(Sorry this is SO late ... I just remembered!)
B = Basics - Link!
Review the basics of simplifying, equivalents, etc.
F = Factors - Link!
List the factors for each of the numbers, then the prime factors from each list.
T = Prime Factorization Trees - Link!
Factor trees bring a number down to its prime factors. Read the directions and/or ask an adult if you get stuck! There is only ONE answer to each tree, so multiply carefully.
M = Monomials - Link!
This one requires knowledge of factor trees, prime factorization, AND variables. I recommend starting with assignment "T" before this one if you are unsure.
Due Tuesday

Thursday, February 6, 2020

Homework for Thursday, February 6

Assignment:  Quizlet - Speed Fractions
Select one set of the following fraction sets on my Quizlet page to practice in Gravity mode for 5 minutes altogether. Set a timer and if you do something else for even a minute, be sure to add that minute back in. You MAY practice longer if your heart desires. ;-)
After you select Gravity but before you begin to play you will be asked what level you want to practice and that decision is yours, but I feel like "medium" is a great choice for most of you ... some of you are more than prepared for high! Be sure to remember to put the "/" (backslash) in between your numerator and denominator and as in 5 1/2 = 11/2.
-You may practice either of the following sets, but keep in mind they are not organized together unless you have created a folder specifically for them or alphabetize the list.  Both options have "fractions" in their title and the sets you may select from today include:
*Fractions: Renaming Mixed to Improper (what we did in class)
*Fractions: Renaming Improper to Mixed
-When you have completed your 5 minutes of speed practice, you may use any of the usual ways in letting me know you have completed this assignment.
-This is a pass/no pass assignment, so please put solid effort into it for your own benefit.
Due Friday

Wednesday, February 5, 2020

Homework for Wednesday, February 5

Assignment: Bingo Card
Today you received your Fraction Bingo cards.  Unfortunately, there are no copies of this assignment online so you will need to pick up your card the next time you come to class.  Notes for this assignment are:
*Fraction Cards must be colored neatly. And colored ... not in graphite.
*Your choice of what fraction to color each circle is yours, but ...
*You may color no more than two circles as wholes and ...
*All equivalent fractions for your choice, up to a denominator of 12, must also be written next to or in your circles.  Examples:  2/5 is equivalent to 4/10 (and vice versa).  1/3 is equivalent to 2/6 to 3/9 to 4/12 (all must be listed).  1/7 has no equivalent with a denominator of 12 or less.
Be sure to count the circles carefully; there are divisions from one whole to twelfths.
Due on Thursday so we can get to playing Bingo asap!

Homework for Tuesday, February 4

Assignment: Fraction Take-Home Pre-Unit - Link!
***FRONT SIDE ONLY***
This assignment is for you to wrap your head around fractions ... what is it that you remember, don't remember, never learned, and are comfortable with? This is a very self-directed unit for homework, and we will be spending our class time exploring HOW fractions are useful rather than on the basic arithmetic of them.
Anyway, this assignment is graded complete/partially complete/incomplete and it is not possible to get full credit if it is not complete by your math period on Wednesday. Make sure to answer every question, get help if you need it, but don't worry too much about "learning" it all by tomorrow or getting them all correct ... that's what this unit is for!
Due Wednesday by the beginning of the period

Assignment: Pre-Test Packet ... and note!
Please read these directions carefully:
*You do NOT need to do the entire packet or even close to it. You can pick and choose problems to check your progress. It's like a giant, printed Quizlet ... do what you need! You should put in at least 10 minutes tonight for full credit.
*You DO need to correct your work using the link to the keys below. This is for YOUR thinking, not mine. If you are missing some, practice more! If things look good, move on.
*You DO need to write me a note (handwritten or typed) that you attach to the packet you turn in tomorrow. You should indicate how much you worked, how confident you feel, any places you may have struggled, and how much you liked this type of study packet. Please let me know ... I want to know if it's worth it for me to do in other units too!
*These are the same sections that will be on the test OTHER THAN the "Find the number set" section which is NOT on the test. That section if there for your enjoyment if you like that sort of challenge or just feel prepared.
Due at the beginning of your math period on Thursday: Whatever you completed and corrected in the packet with your note stapled on.

*Key to all sections:  Link!
Please note that I made this key last night ... late last night ... and have not double-checked it. If you believe there is an error, please email me!
*Key to Exploring Equations: Link!

Assignment: Negatives Choice!
This is a pre-test choice assignment where you are to practice whatever you feel needs practicing prior to the test next week. Consequently, and obviously (?), feel free to select another assignment if you are not happy with the one you selected in class today.
Some of the options are ...

Homework for Wednesday, January 22

Assignment: Applications (test level) - Link!
This is the LAST "required" application assignment, then it's up to you to decide what you need to practice between now and the test next Thursday.
While ALL of these will not be on the test, this is the level of application questions you are responsible for, so know them well!
Try to recall what it was like BEFORE you knew negative equations ... weren't these problems easier then? Just ANSWER  the question in whatever fashion works!

Homework for Thursday, January 16

Assignment: Choice! (Sub or Ops)
As usually happens with negatives, many of those of you who are new to them are struggling to keep all of the ideas straight.
This is normal.
Be patient with yourself.
Review what you know.
If you can't remember, visit my Mo'Help tab and you will find some instructions on negatives. That's what they are there for! It's a lot to keep track of, so breathe and let it sink in.
In a nutshell ... "only" subtraction has rules that don't make "sense." You know how to add and you know how to multiply/divide because those do make sense. Remember the tricky rule of when you see two negatives together IN SUBTRACTION (and subtraction only) and that you turn them BOTH into a positive side and move on. Essentially it becomes an addition problem which, if you think about it, is a good thing! Now add your positives and negatives ... and so on.

Here are your options for tonight. PLEASE feel free to move up or down the choices to whatever makes you comfortable. The only exception comes for those of you who completed homework "A" on Monday ... you cannot do it again. ;-)
*Negative Addition and Subtraction - Link!
- This assignment was available on Monday, so if you have already completed it, please move on to the next option.
*Negatives: More Add and Sub Practice - Link!
Practice is good. Repetition creates familiarity. Build confidence!
*Add, Sub, and Ops - Link!
After some quick review of addition and subtraction, try out these order of operations.
*Order of Ops A - Link!
Feel like you have your negative skills down? Try them in the order of operations ... it's a whole new level of complexity, but you can do it!

Homework for Wednesday, January 15

Assignment: Quizlet!
If you have forgotten your user name, I believe Quizlet will send it to you if you use your email. But seriously, write it into your planner along with your password so you can refer back to it. It's not like your Quizlet name and password have private, personal information, right?
Use this opportunity to practice where you feel weak in negatives. The test will be in about 2 weeks, but many of those days between now and then will not be spent in school, so don't rest on the assumption that we will have lots of practice time in class! For many of you, just keeping track of what to do when adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing is enough for now: get GREAT at these things.

The following sets are options for this assignment.
You need to get 10 correct in Write mode to receive credit.
You may bring me a note or send me an email with the information on the set you completed and/or a screenshot of your score.
You WILL receive a confirmation email or you may assume I did not receive it.

Homework for Tuesday, January 14

Assignment: Verbal Equations #1 - Link!
Knowing how to create equations from information is key to solving more complex problems.
Assigning variables to those unknowns is part of the equation writing process.
Follow the directions on this worksheet; you are writing equations, you are NOT solving them.
In your future, you will actually graph these equations on coordinate planes in order to find all of the possible answers ... it's pretty cool, but this is the first step. Enjoy it!
Due Wednesday

*Quizlet is ONLY homework if we have NO school on a regular school day. You are always welcome to practice it, especially the negative sets right now, otherwise, let's hope we don't have to worry about it. ;-)

Homework for Monday, January 13

Assignment: Negative Subtraction Choice
Whew! Today we learned and/or reviewed how to subtract negatives in equations. It starts out as a lot, but does become manageable ... eventually, you will forget it was ever difficult at all. But for now, if you are struggling, just take your time and LEARN it. Practice helps.
S: Negative Subtraction Basics - Link!
This worksheet gives you repetition. Get used to looking at the equations until they become familiar. Rewriting them all as addition problems will help.
A: Adding and Subtracting Negatives - Link!
Throw in some addition and see the differences ... and the similarities ... in subtraction and addition equations.
O: Negative Order of Ops - Basics - Link!
These ops are the basics including only 2-step equations. If you feel ready to mix in some multiplication and division with your addition and subtraction, but not ready to take a giant leap, these ops are for you!
H: Heckuva Negative Ops Plus - Link!
Eventually, we will all get here, but some of you are ready to practice this now. Be careful, show all of your steps, and simplify as you go!
Due Tuesday
*You are welcome, as always, to change which assignment you are doing.

Homework for Thursday, January 9

Assignment: Mystery Picture -
- Link to directions! -
I cannot upload the coordinate grid, but you can create your own on any piece of graph paper. Make sure your "0,0" coordinate is in the center of the paper with at least 14 each direction on the x-axis and 20 each direction on the y-axis.
To read coordinate points, the first number represents the x (positive - right, or negative - left) and the y is the second number (positive - up, or negative - down).
Follow the directions. Connect points with lines and color as instructed.

Assignment: Real Life Negatives D - Link!
These are more complex than the usual real-life problems and some are even tricky, so be sure to read the questions carefully.
What are they asking you? Notice the wording and how it affects which information you use and what you are solving for. Does your math fit the story? Be sure!
