October 20 - Cockroach pre-run

Assignment: Cockroach pre-run

Due: Before class on Wednesday

Cockroach running is an annual tradition at NOVA, and that activity will happen in class this Wednesday. Tonight's homework asks the students to think about what this will entail and what they might learn from it. Much like the balloon-popping dog assignment, I want them to make some estimates and then share what they are curious about. In this age of having immediate answers to our questions, having time to wonder and NOT know is an experience we need more of! So let them wonder ...

And how can you help?
Let them make the guesstimates on their own. This time there was no video preview, but they know how long the experiment will last and, maybe, approximately how big a cockroach is?
But you can help them think up good questions about the three statements at the bottom of the page. Make sure they have an accurate understanding of what an "assumption" is. And talk to them ... what do they THINK will happen?!?!?
When you don't know something, there is something left to learn!
