The Ups and Downs of Shopping
Due Tuesday, September 9
This assignment can be tricky! How can you help?
1) Encourage them to read it thoroughly and think about the wording. Why is it worded the way it is?
2) If this was a simple addition/subtraction problem, would it be difficult? Then why might it be trickier than your first impression?
We are working on "proving" your answers in class. Many students are used to calculating math in their heads and don't yet have experience proving their answers. This isn't a lower level explanation of, "I know that 2 + 1 is 3 because if I have 2 apples and get one more, I will have three apples."
3) Up to two points are given for drawing a proof. This is not to be an equation, it is to be a visual representation of the scenario. It will most likely require rereading the problem a few times and checking to see if the visual works. A visual that is on the right track will receive one of the two points.
4) A correct answer is worth one point.
The majority of people do not draw a working visual (they make assumptions) and miss some of the important details. It is not a trick, but it is tricky!
This assignment, as with the majority of math assignments, may be redone once. Learning from mistakes helps cement learning as students rethink their original assumptions. Once they have a plan, let them roll with it!
