Trans Math: ws pg 78 - Evaluating Expressions with Integers
*Be sure to complete this worksheet exactly how we went over in class:
-- in the blank next to each equation, you need to rewrite the equation WITH the variable(s) replaced.
-- then rewrite if necessary and SOLVE below the line.
-- CIRCLE your answer.
-- you MAY use another sheet of paper for your equations and write the solution in the blank instead, but I MUST be able to see how you replaced those variables.
*Finish up any papers you would like to redo and missing assignments tonight so you can head into break a free person!
QUIZ BOWL tomorrow - invite your parents!

Homework Update for the even longer Thanksgiving Weekend
Dearest students ...
Fortunately, we had finished the work we needed to finish for the fall trimester before school was canceled today. The only thing some of you may be worried about are redoes and/or retests. Here is the way I am handling things:
Trans Math: You had nothing new "due."
*To guarantee assignments would be counted in the fall trimester, they had to be turned in LAST Friday, November 19. Consequently, unless you have compelling reasons for needing those extra points, I don't really have the extra time to correct and reenter these new grades. You will only see the cumulative grade on your report card.
*Please check Teacherease and determine whether or not it is important for you to negotiate getting extra time to turn in any late, redone, and/or missing assignments. Most of your grades WILL NOT change significantly at this point anyway. Again, on your report card you will only see your final grade and the new overall comment that I will enter for you.
*The grading for the paper airplane experiment (the part that we were able to finish) is complete. The grades you now see in Teacherease are yours!
Pre-Algebra: Retests will be WEDNESDAY in Gruel.
*Pre-Algebra grades should be complete EXCEPT for retests.
*However, please consider how the retest will impact your overall grade and, consequently, whether or not it is necessary to retest. It is most important that you understand your mistakes at this time, not that you make up an extra percentage point or two.
*HOWEVER ... I know that some of you are on the brink of the grade you have been working for and I certainly want you to be able to retest. Just let me know!
***Chapter 3 mid-chapter practice test is on Quizlet!***
*We will begin lesson 3.4 on Monday morning.
Happiest of Thanksgivings to all of you -
Mo ;-)

*When you have a negative outside of a parentheses (as in 5x - 8(x+2)) be sure to distribute the negative to both terms in the parentheses (as in 5x - 8x - 16) then simplify (as in -3x - 16).
*Be careful ... this should not be "in your head" stuff!

Trans Math: Order of Operations ws
*This homework has been differentiated for YOU!
*Please write down a title for your homework page ... if it goes missing, you will want to have the same worksheet again. I will also write your assignment as a "comment" in your Teacherease account for you to reference.
Due: Wednesday
Pre-Algebra: pg 74, 12 - 19 AND 28 - 35
*This is the distributive property, so distribute!
*Remember, this is not about getting the correct answer to a simple problem, it's showing me HOW you distribute and making sure you distribute correctly.
*Also remember: 6x + 10 is an answer simplified as far as it can be simplified. You cannot combine those terms to be 16x ... it's against the math law.

Trans Math: Coin Packets
*These are the many pages of data and graphs that we have collected over the past 2 weeks.
*You should have received your checklist in class today (unless you were absent). This will also be the grading sheet, so please attach it to the front of your packet.
*For another list of the pages that are due, see the homework posted for 9/23 AND add the 3 observation questions on the 5-number summary worksheet.
*Please be obvious yet thorough about your observations. The observations should compare data on the 3 box plots you have made. In other words, what can you tell me about the different collections of coins just by looking at the box plots?
*Due: Tuesday (stapled together in order)
Pre-Algebra: pg 36, 12 - 30 AND pg 37, 35 - 46 all
*1.7 subtracting negative integers
*Be sure to show your work when the equation involves a variable! Recopy the equation to reflect the integer you have replaced the variable with; then solve.

*Bring to class for Wednesday
Pre-Algebra: pg 26, 53 - 64
*Review of the value of integers (negative & positive) and absolute value.
*BE CAREFUL when you are substituting the given value for the variable: your order of operations is important!
*Remember: you do not need to write down the original expression, but you should write down the expression with the number(s) you are using for the variable BEFORE solving it.
*Tip: Do not forget that in the book, "evaluate" means more simply to "solve" the problem.

Hello again! Thank you all for a wonderful first day in math class. Hopefully you are all thrilled to do your math homework tonight ... right?
Trans Math: Magic Trick
*You will need 16 cards, 4 each of 4 different cards.
*Follow these steps:
1) Tell your story (shopping? parties?) Show your 4 groups.
2) Deal out your cards face down so that each "person" goes into one of the 4 piles.
3) Have the "people" prepare to go home by stacking the 4 piles on top of one another.
4) Have them travel home by cutting the deck many, many times.
5) Deal the cards back out, face down and HOPE that they all made it home safely.
6) Turn the piles over!
NEXT: EXPLAIN THE TRICK - the math behind the trick and why it works.
Have your parent sign your paper.
Due: Friday! You will turn it into the basket.
Pre-Algebra: pg xxv - Scavenger Hunt

Welcome!
Welcome new students and parents to my math blog. Please look around and get used to the site. Specific things you might find interesting are:
*Go to the blog archive in the right column of the blog and click on one of the months, like March. You will then be able to see examples of what the assignments look like in this blog.
*Note the links on the right. They will take you directly to many useful sites (like other teacher pages and Teacherease) immediately.
*You will also notice I like to include personal pictures; they usually change monthly, just for fun!
*This summer I practiced pasting URLs that students could follow to certain answer keys I had posted. You can find examples of these in the July section of this blog. Feel free to follow one if you would like ... these particular keys will be disappearing once the school year begins!
I look forward to working with all of you this year,
Mo ;-)

Final cumulative tests are used to determine individual weaknesses in the math skills necessary to move on to the next level of math. These tests are not graded, but rather used to give students an idea of areas they should study over the course of the summer. Students interested in reviewing specific skills should use the guidelines that follow:
Trans Math:
Tuesday - June 1: Basic applications, negative integers, order of operations, decimals.
Wednesday - June 2: Fractions, ratios, proportions, percentages, probability.
*Students interested in studying pre-algebra over the summer need to demonstrate mastery in all areas of this test.
*Pre-algebra books and study packets will be available on Friday, June 4. See me!
Pre-Algebra:
Wednesday - June 2: Evaluating expressions (order of operations & exponents), writing verbal expressions, inequalities (yuk, remember?), equation busting, and simplifying like terms using all operations.
Thursday - June 3: Prime factorization, GCFs & LCDs, multiplying and simplifying fractions with variables, applications with percents/ratios/proportions, solving for the missing side of triangles/rectangles, scale drawings (congruent sides), and MAYBE the Pythagorean Theorem (I haven't written that part yet).
*Pre-Algebra BOOKS are due this Thursday!

Homework for Monday, 5/3
Trans Math: Stock Graph, pg 33
*This is the #3 assignment in your Finance Park book.
*Please follow the directions ... you will need to make a key and accurately plot 3 stocks.
*Due Tuesday - there will be one point subtracted if this assignment is not completed by class time.
More taxes in class on Tuesday!
Pre-Algebra: ws 7.6
PLEASE NOTE: I accidently gave you the worksheet from the next lesson (applications), not noticing that 7.5 was missing from my workbook until now (3:30). In other words, apply the skills we've learned using whatever method most makes sense to you. Just do your bestest!
*So, pay attention to the directions on the worksheet, okay?
*Notice what is 100% (wholesale or original price, depending on the problem)
*Notice whether or not your price will be increasing (markup percent) or decreasing (discount price).
*Then APPLY the markup or savings ... (see example below)
*For problems 8 - 13, you must find the tax and add it to the food bill.
*Sometimes there is a tip too!
*Due Tuesday
Example: After you find the monetary value of the markup percent, you must add it to the wholesale/original price in order to find the new price. Your other option is to add 100% to the markup percent before you solve the equation ... it's all about how you decide to arrange it.

Update 12:44 p.m. Sunday
MOST of the pre-algebra retests have been entered into Teacherease. Much, much better, by the way!
Shayla, Shiori, and Hannah I do NOT have your test corrections and cannot post your scores until I do. By the way, there are two sets of test corrections without a name on the "no name wall."
I have made it through a huge stack of the redone and late papers and they have now been posted, but there is still a short stack to go. I am taking a break to work outside whilst the sun is shining, then will be back to finish.

Update for the Weekend, 4/17
Everyone,
I have two NOVA soccer games to attend today at 10:00 and noon, but after that I will be correcting papers and tests for most of my weekend hours. You can check Teacherease this evening, but don't expect it to all be complete until later Sunday. Please check for my timely updates.
Trans Math: Test on Monday!
*Percentages, Proportions, Ratios, and Probability.
*You also need to be able to convert fractions, to decimals, to percentages, and back.
*PLEASE use the Quizlet pages to practice if you need to.
Pre-Algebra: Think about those stock investments!
*On Tuesday we will begin creating your portfolios, so you may want to have an idea of what you will be investing in.
*Depending on how my weekend goes (timewise), I may try to create a list of stocks that have been "taken" and post it or make a link to it here. If nothing else, I will make a list to hang in the classroom so you can see it daily.

Spring Break update
What to do this spring break? Take a break!
However, you can look forward to ...
Trans Math: completing the ratios, proportions, and percentages unit. I plan to have the test during conference week; most likely Monday the 19th.
Feel free to take a trip to Quizlet and get some practice in ... if you are looking for something to do, that is.
Pre-Algebra: We are building towards the retest on Thursday, April 15, so I can have your new scores in by spring conferences. Be thinking about what you and your study partner will be practicing this week. We will have a few application lessons, but you will also be picking your own focus for the homework.
I am updating your grades daily, but it's going slowly ... keep checking back in!
Happy spring,
Mo ;-)
