Homework for Wednesday, 1/26

Trans Math:  Map Distances ws
*Be careful ... these questions are trickier than they look.  Be sure to answer the actual question, not just what you assume the question is.
*Forgive me for the typos on the worksheet too:  Tom is BRINGING a book to Ann's house and you determine the shortest route, not necessarily the order written in the question.
*If you forgot the worksheet (or if you are Rachel), you should be able to click on the link below and have it appear right in front of your eyes!
**Map Distances ws
Due: Thursday

Pre-Algebra:  pg 214, 18 - 33.
*This is the practice test in the book; trust us when we say you will need to know how to do this stuff.

Nova Basketball Games 1/22

More GREAT games this weekend!

6th grade boys and the girls teams both played well won their games.
The game between our 7th grade boys and 8th grade boys teams was close and classy!  In the end, the 7th grade boys made the clutch shots that brought them the victory; congratulations to BOTH teams.  I was proud of the sportsmanship on the court and getting to watch such a nail-biting game.  Keep it cool now; you both "deserved" the win.

We hope to see more of you at our games this coming weekend.  Then on Saturday Feb. 5, the Nova 6th grade boys play the Nova girls.  Be there!

Homework for Thursday, 1/20

Trans Math:  Fraction Addition ws
*You should have received one of three worksheets today that involves fraction addition.  Since there are different worksheets, you will need to email me for an extra copy if you have lost yours.  If you are lucky, I will be able to send you one!
*Remember HOW to add and you will be successful.  This is not about the rules ... it's about WHY you can add.
*I will provide an adding fractions link on the Mo'Help page.
*If you are still feeling rusty and you have time, visit the adding fractions option on our Quizlet page!
*Due Friday.
***Frodoland and retests in class on Friday ... come prepared!***

Pre-Alg:  pg 202, 43 - 50 AND 56 - 59
*Finding quotients with the answers expressed using only positive exponents.
*If you get stuck ...
  1) You can look in your book, pg 200-201, examples 3 and 4.
  2) You can think about what the problem looks like as a fraction/division/multiplication problem and solve it, then apply your own rules.  (think of simplifying your fractions)
*By saying you may only use positive exponents, does NOT mean that your answer won't end up as a fraction or that there won't be exponents left in the denominator.  However, if there is a negative exponent in the denominator, you need to make that part of the problem positive.
*Due Friday.
***Retests for Chapter 4 part 1 Friday, 1/21 in class***
***Test for Chapter 4 part 2 NEXT Friday, 1/28***

1) All pies must be colored.
2) ALL equivalent fractions (up to a denominator of 12) need to be written next to the pie.
3) You may not use more than 2 "whole" pies.
*Unfortunately, I cannot upload a copy of this assignment; you will need to pick up another card in class if you have lost yours.
These are due Thursday so we can play bingo on Monday.
*If you have any errors on your card, you will be correcting those in class on Monday before you get to play ... so be careful!
Special notes: Retests for the negative unit will be in class this Friday.
Frodoland groups will meet in class this Friday.

Pre-Algebra:  pg 202, 16 - 31

*Once you get the hang of it, this WILL get easier.
Due: Thursday
Note: Retests for the first half of chapter 4 will be in class this Friday.

Weekend Thoughts

You may have heard that flurries of snow are expected tonight and later this week.  While I am always excited for snow (seriously!), I wanted you to know how this might affect some of our events this week:
1) Math Tests - Math tests are scheduled as planned - Transition Math on Tuesday, 1/11 and Pre-algebra on Thursday.  If there is no school prior to the test date, the test date will be bumped that many days into the future.  If there is no school on the day of the test, it will be bumped to the day we return.
2) P.E.  - Any p.e. classes missed due to snow days will not be made up.  Sorry!  However, even if there is a late start p.e. classes regularly scheduled on those days will still be on time and for the full 2 hours.
3) Basketball practices/games - If schools are open, basketball practices will occur as usual.  If schools are closed, the gyms are closed too.  Assume there will be games on Saturday. And CONGRATULATIONS to our 3 Nova boy's teams for their basketball victories this weekend!  Although the girls lost, all 4 teams are off to a great season.
4) Quizlet - I keep forgetting to make this official, but anyone can join the Quizlet website.  Just click on the Quizlet link on the right, then send me an email letting me know the email address and user name you used.  I will send you an invitation to my Transition Math page asap; it would be handy to do this so you can study for the Negatives test using the practice problems! REMEMBER: you need to join using your parental info so that you are old enough to be a member.
5) Winterim Forms - Get your signed Winterim forms in before 8:00 a.m. on Monday in order to get the best shot at your first choices.  Forms and catalogs are available on the main Nova website (see link at right).
6) The Oregon Ducks football team playing for the Championship - will occur Monday, 1/10 at 5:00 and will likely be a source of candy/brownie/pod points to come.  Go Ducks!

Homework for Thursday, 1/6

Trans Math:  Pre-test study worksheet
*Be sure to write the rules you followed next to your work.  Things like, "I counted cowboys," and "pos x neg = neg," work just fine.
*Remember that, "I used the order of operations," is not an acceptable explanation ... especially if you are using them incorrectly!
*NOTE!  Jake says I was napping while typing some of the problems and that none of the solutions work.  If you believe that is the case, solve the problem correctly (according to you), circle your answer, and then write your rules.
*It is important to get this in tomorrow so you can have it corrected and back to study from on Monday evening.
Due Friday

Pre-Algebra:  pg 185, 29 - 37
*You may use whatever method you are comfortable with to simplify these variable expressions, but you MUST show your work.
*Be sure to write the original problem on your page too.
Due Friday
Note: We're darn close to being ready to take the mid-chapter test ... be prepared to talk about viable dates tomorrow.

Wednesday, January 5, 2011

Homework for Wednesday, 1/5

Trans Math:  3 Puzzles ws
*Have fun solving these puzzles.  The beauty of math is understanding how to use it!
*When creating your own puzzle you may choose to create an application story, much like the "Real Life Negs" problems.  Again, have fun with it!
Due: Thursday

Pre-Algebra: page 179, 12 - 30 EVEN (special shout-outs to Tessa, Jeongvin, Galen, Linnea, and Ethan!)
*Remember the 5 steps necessary for solving each problem:
1) make factor trees
2) write out the prime factorization (not simplified)
3) circle the common factors
4) rewrite as a multiplication problem and then
5) solve to determine the GCF.
*For problems 20 - 26 you must also state whether or not the numbers are relatively prime.  (guess what?  the definition is in your book if you have forgotten between school and home)
Due: Thursday

Tuesday, January 4, 2011

Homework for Tuesday, 1/4

Trans Math:  Order of Ops with Negs ws
*Write out your steps!  7th grade Tessa was quoted as saying today, "It really IS important to get this now."
*Be methodical ... skipping steps can run you into trouble very quickly.
*Forget the worksheet?  Click here: Negative Ops ws
Due: Wednesday
***The negative integers test is tentatively set for next Tuesday, 1/11***

Pre-Algebra:  pg 175, 34 - 44 even AND 48 - 55 ALL
*Use factor trees to write the prime factorization for these numbers and monomials.
*You do NOT have to write out all of the factors like we did in class.
Due: Wednesday
***Retests for Chapter 3.5 are in Gruel Wednesday through Friday.  You must select a day, let us know, and complete the section IN Gruel on THAT day***

Monday, January 3, 2011

Homework for Monday, 1/3

Welcome back!
I hope you all had a wonderful break (I certainly did!), but it's time to pick back up where we left off ...

Trans Math: Comprehensive Review ws
*Review of all operations with negatives and absolute value
*New Year's Resolution: Show all of your work!
Due: Tuesday
***We should be ready to test next week ... stay tuned!***

Pre-Algebra: pg 175, 16 - 33
*For problems 16 - 23, list ALL of the factors, including 1
*For problems 24 - 31, you may list "P" for prime and "C" for composite
*For problems 32 and 33, you may either write out the entire tree yourself (broken down the way they broke it down) OR identify the "?" by row.  For example, row 1 = 4, row 2 =  5 and 9, etc.
Due: Tuesday
