What's Up Now?

Greetings from home!  What a strange week of school it's been ... some of you I have seen every day, some of you a few of the days, and some of you not at all.  Rest assured that we will get back on track together and that I will be forgiving with the due dates.  However, you won't want to fall behind, so please do what you can do to be up to speed.  Here is where we are...

Monday, January 25:  We completed fraction questions.  Please see Monday's post for a copy of that assignment and instructions.  You can do this easily without having attended class.

Tuesday, January 26:  Pre-Quiz.  This assignment is to show me what you know and do not know about fractions.  You may review as needed and get help, but the sooner you complete it the sooner I can help guide you through this unit.  There is a copy of the pre-quiz on Tuesday's post.

Thursday, January 28:  You received your Fraction Bingo cards.  Unfortunately there are no copies of this assignment online, so you will need to pick up your card the next time you come to class.  Notes for this assignment are:
*Fraction Cards must be colored neatly.
*Your choice of what fraction to color each circle is yours, but ...
*You may color no more than two circles as wholes and ...
*All equivalent fractions for your choice must also be written next to or in your circles.
Let's make these due on Tuesday, February 2 so everyone can get a card and we can get to playing Bingo asap!

Retests:  Will be Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday of next week as planned.  You can practice your skills on Quizlet, so please practice as needed.

Volleyball:  Will have practices next Thursday and Friday with our first games on Saturday, February 6!  Teams and game schedules will be on the Mo'Sports tab this weekend.  I will also be sending out emails specifically to players this weekend.

We will be having LOTS of guests next week, including Monday, so I hope you are all feeling better and can bring your best healthy, welcoming selves to school!  I look forward to seeing you all refreshed and reenergized after this three-day weekend. We have a lot more fun things to get started on doing together.
Stay home and take care,
Mo ;-)

Homework for Tuesday, January 26

Assignment:  Fractions Pre-Quiz
You should know the drill by now!  This pre-quiz is for you to see the skills we will cover in this unit and your job is to demonstrate and discuss your knowledge of these skills.  Honesty is always the best policy.
Please complete all of the problems with help, as needed, and answer the questions about your comfort level with the different skills and terms as well as where you see yourself needing help or extra practice.

Due Thursday  (because there is not school on Wednesday)

Homework for Monday, January 25

Assignment:  Fraction Questions LINK!
If you were absent today, please make sure to go to the bottom of this blog post to find "help" you will need with question #2.
Answer the questions about fractions thoroughly and with detail and examples.  If there is anything you do not know, ASK SOMEONE.  Part of this assignment is explaining what you do know, but the other part is about finding out what you do not know so you can learn it.
Again - be thorough, be honest, give examples.
Due Tuesday

For absent people or any of you who forgot what this looked like:  Here is a picture of Ella's fraction paper she made in the first grade.

One of my questions to people was, "If you have been doing fractions for so long, why are we still doing them in math this year?  Don't you already know what they are?"  So why do you think I whipped this out and showed it off?

Homework for Thursday, January 21

Assignment:  Test Corrections
Be sure to follow the outline for making your test corrections.
You must:
-Identify your error(s) specifically
-Rework the problem completely
-End up with the correct answer as supported by your new work
Please get help if you need it!  It is important that you understand and fix your mistakes so that learning can take place.
Due Friday during Seminar (Study Skills)

*Next Monday, Math Lunch is required for anyone missing 2 or more problems on the order of operations section of the test.
*Retests will be the week of February 1 - 4 during lunch.  You should indicate on your test corrections sheet which sections, if any, you will be retaking and on which day.  You may only retake one section per lunch period.

Due Thursday

Please check for your test scores on TeacherEase tonight so you are prepared for class tomorrow where we will be reviewing questions and discussing retakes.  Overall you guys did a terrific job and I am really proud of how far you have come, but there is still room for growth ... so breathe easy and get ready to continue to move forward!

This Thursday, your Quiz Bowl #3 questions are due to me.  Please leave them in the math in-box any time you are finished.  A copy of the questions for this round are HERE.
If your questions are not turned in by Thursday, they will not be in the final Quiz Bowl round on Friday, so don't forget them!

Homework for Thursday, January 14

Assignment:  Pre-Quiz Corrections
Today you are to correct your negatives pre-quiz that you got back in class ... hopefully you noticed that it has not been corrected yet.
You are to use a "color" to correct your work; you are to write in the correct answers if they are currently incorrect.
You may correct directly on the worksheet or another piece of paper; you only need to rework the ones you missed.
Be sure to check the back too; read what you wrote (it's so interesting!) and solve the central tendency problems at the bottom of the page.
Due Friday
If you also would like practice on the order of operations in preparation for the test tomorrow, you may complete any of the previous order of operation assignments (scroll back on the blog through these two weeks) or you can complete the negative order of operations set in Quizlet.

Homework for Wednesday, January 13

Assignment:  Negs Comp Review ws
Be sure to show your work on all of these.  Numbers 2 - 6 need to have solutions on each side, not just a symbol between the expressions.
This should give you a good idea of what will be on the test, but there are no exponents here, so we'll review those together again.
Practicing Quizlet in areas you feel less confident is an awesome idea too!
Due Thursday

*Grading for the Online survey is now at -0.5 if turned in today

Tuesday, January 12, 2016

Homework for Tuesday, January 12

Assignment: Negs Ops Choice
Today you selected from four different order of operations worksheets:
*Negative Ops B - More practice with negatives in the order of operations
*Even More Ops with Negs - Order of operations with some absolute value included
*Exponents - This is the same difficult worksheet as was an option last week: practice  with exponents in various locations
*Heckuva - Longer, multi-step equations with negatives
Be sure to show your steps!  I will be handing back papers without work to redo.  :(
Due Wednesday

*As per class agreement, your online survey is due by midnight tonight or you will begin to lose 1/2 point per day.  If I reassign your survey, you have until the end of the week to resubmit it.
*If you need the instructions for this survey, scroll back through this blog and you will find the steps listed on both Monday & Friday of last week.
*All of you:  make sure you clicked "Hand in" or I cannot access your survey!

Homework for Monday, January 11

Assignment:  Real Life Negatives - E
*Note!!!!  Assume that Ground Level "0" is the median of the floors.
Have you ever wondered how "real life" these problems are?  Well, if you live in an imaginary world, they are as real as it gets.  ;-)
*Be sure to read each problem carefully and answer what it is asking you.
*Be sure to organize your work on your page so I can see what you did; in other words, show your work.
*These do not have to be written as equations tonight, but do keep in mind that you will be asked to write equations for some problems on the test.  That means an equation with an equal sign; be prepared!
Due Tuesday

*Please check to see if I have reassigned your "Survey;" it looks to me like it should magically appear back on your todo list ... but I cannot tell exactly.
I will be discussing this in depth tomorrow in class!

Homework for Thursday, January 7

Assignment:  Negative Ops Choice
Today you selected your own assignment based upon your comfort with the order of operations when negative numbers are involved.  We will continue to practice these, so build your skills carefully as they are key to your successful math future!
I have copies of the second two assignments, but not the first.  If you selected the first and "lost" it, then please do one of the other options.
30:  Next steps, from the same workbook as yesterday's page 29.
A:  Longer equations  (very similar to "30" above)
E:  Negative Operations with Exponents
Write our your steps; negatives require much more in keeping track of where you are in an equation.  Trust me.  ;-)
Due Friday

Also due:  Online Survey
2) Online Math Survey #2
This assignment is to focus on your strengths and growth goals in math for the winter trimester.
*Your answers should directly reflect my feedback on your fall report card comment.
*The choice of what to select is yours; you may highlight one point or more than one if you feel it is appropriate.
*Both questions will be listed online in TeacherEase; please use the hint button if you aren't sure what to write.
*Your report card comments should be available online now in your TeacherEase account if you do not have your paper copy and would like to use it for reference.
This assignment is worth 4 points:  1 point each for answering the questions, and 1 point each for elaborating on your selections.  Remember that elaborating does NOT mean restating your selection, but it does mean providing details about how you feel about your choices, details about how you will go about meeting your goals, etc.  (For many of you elaborating might even be a goal, so this is good practice!)
Directions for finding this assignment:
*Go to your TeacherEase account.
*Select "Assignments."
*Note this assignment is referred to as "Online Math Survey;" select "Take Quiz" even though it is NOT a quiz.
Remember that until you "submit" your survey, you can close it and continue working on it later.
Due Friday

Wednesday, January 6, 2016

Homework for Weds, January 6

Assignment:  Negs Order of Ops - Basics
Follow the order of operations carefully when finding these answers.  Practice showing your steps to help you keep track of the negatives: this is critical!  Even if it seems "easy" today, you will appreciate these good habits very soon.
We will continue to review these in class tomorrow and you will decide the next level of your Ops homework from there.
Due Thursday

Tuesday, January 5, 2016

Assignment:  Real Life Negatives D
*Complete this assignment carefully ... there may be extra information or you may be starting equations from some place other than zero.  If you don't read the problems, you may miss a detail!
*Repeat: this assignment is tricky! You can figure them out. ;-)
*The title of the assignment is a direct link to a copy.
Due Wednesday

Homework for Monday, January 4

Assignments:
1) Multiplication and Division with Negs
This assignment will give you an awareness of how fast you are at multiplication and division as well as how accurate you are under time pressure.
For this credit/no credit assignment you will follow these specific directions:
*Time yourself going down the left hand column, A-N. (14 problems)
*Write down your time.
*Correct your answers - this means you will need to mark any errors in another color AND rewrite the correct answers.
*If you would like to complete other problems on the page for credit, feel free to do so, but it is not required.
