Assignment: Box Plot Practice - Link!
Whoa, this was a lot of information wrapped up in one day, wasn't it?!?
Tonight you will practice what we did using two different number lists from which to build your 5-number summaries. What I really want from you is the questions that come up as you build these ... what makes sense? What does not? What do you do when the data isn't easy to manipulate? How do you decide the scale for your graph? Etc. There are a LOT of questions, so let's figure out which ones come up tonight when you are working.
By the way, if I haven't told you lately: this is my FAVORITE graph. I have my reasons. 😊
There is MORE HELP at this link for creating a 5-number summary from data and at this link for drawing your box plot. You can check the Mo'Help tab for other topics. Just a reminder.
Try your best, use your notes, and come with questions tomorrow!

Assignment: What's Yo' Problem? - Link!
All problems should involve negative numbers.
All answers to your problems and your work should be on the back of your page, all problems are on the front.
There are two options for tonight's homework:
Option 1:
a) Candy Point: create a candy point worthy problem using the format I gave you in class. Your wording must be legible and include an illustration. You may draw or paste in your illustration. You may type or handwrite your problem and tape it onto the form. I should be able to print your candy point tomorrow if I want to and have it ready to use.
b) Central Tendency problem: create a number set of 8 numbers that includes negatives. Ask one question about this set involving the mean, median or mode.
--------------------------------------
Option 2:
a) Candy Point: create a word problem that is candy point worthy, but it does not need to be in candy point form or include an illustration.
b) Central Tendency problem: create a number set of 8 numbers that include negatives. Ask one question about this set involving the mean, median or mode.
c) Real Life Problem: Include Kyle, Mr. Gacek, or Mavis and write a scenario as they are written for our Real Life Negs problems.
d) Write 3 different equations: one at each level: simple, large numbers, and decimals. These are just equations as in 4 + (-5) = ? and -4 + (-3.8) = ?

Homework for Wednesday, December 6
Assignment: Real Life Negatives C
We went over this in class today: you MUST write the correct equation in the order it is shown before solving. Your equation MUST be written as an addition problem and it must be solvable in the equation as you write it ... meaning parentheses are fine as long as they do not change the answer.
Having the correct solution is the second part.
Knowing how to set up an equation from verbal (written) information is super important!

Assignment: Negative Addition Choice
*The title of each assignment option is a link to the worksheet.
*Tell yourself a story as you work through the equations, it will help you to think about what you are doing with the numbers.
*Feel free to select a different assignment than the one you chose in class and/or do more than one worksheet if you are interested!
A) Addition Basics - Practice using negatives in simple equations!
B) Big Addition - Same skill with bigger numbers.
L) Longer Addition - Longer equations where you will need to sort your positives and negatives together before solving. If you are still number-line hopping, this worksheet is not for you.
D) Decimals - Test your ability to "do" the right thing and keep track of whether or not your answer is positive or negative.

Assignment: Real Life Negatives B - Link!
Same as last Thursday, your task is to make sense of the problem and solve for the question. We're still not concerned with what it looks like in an equation, but we did practice thinking about it today. We will be seeing equations on worksheets soon ... don't rush it!
*When you get to the mean, range, and median questions (#5) use what you know about these terms to answer the question. Use the given VALUES ... which we discussed in class today. (not absolutes!) Draw yourself a picture if you need to; you do have the tools to solve these.
Be sure to write all of your work on the paper so I can see how you are solving them.
Calculators are not allowed; I'm hoping that goes unsaid. ;-)

Assignment: Real Life Negatives - A ... Link!
Welcome to the "real" world (as real as it gets in these examples) of negative integers. Today you are to focus on what you are doing not how you write it.
Mo's advice:
*Think about what the numbers represent. Draw pictures on the page or in your mind, but use your imagination to think about the story behind the question.
*Associate! These numbers all have values that go in a direction: towards zero or away from zero. So if you go down the steps at Hogwarts, all of those downward steps represent going DOWN (aka a negative number, fyi) and all of the times you go UP get you higher (a positive direction). Again, picture the story.
*HOW you solve these problems should be common sense. I'm not at all concerned how you represent it mathematically, I want to know where you end up: behind the starting point? above sea level? above zero? with less money? How can you collect the values of the numbers and use them to come up with an answer? Think about what you know is true then figure out how to get to that point.
EXAMPLES: each with different answers, yet essentially the same numbers ...
A) If your horse is 7 miles away from Olympia, and runs for 5 miles towards Olympia, rests, then runs 4 more miles in the same direction, he ends up 2 miles PAST Olympia, right? Right!
B) If your horse is 7 miles away from Olympia, and begins running to Olympia for 5 miles, but realized he forgot his baby horse, so he runs backwards for 4 miles, he is now 6 miles away from (before) Olympia, right? Try drawing that scenario.
*The rest of it is up to you. I strongly, strongly recommend drawing yourself a simple scenario and figuring out what it is you want to know. Don't worry about the negatives or positives, just think about what they represent in the story. I keep saying this because it is key to your "aha" moment!
*And yes, labels are VERY important ... you MUST label your answers (either with words or a negative sign) to get full credit.
* I do have a copy of this assignment and here it is!
Due Friday - try to enjoy it. ;-)

Assignment: Coffee Prices Part 2 - Link!
You will notice some similarities and some differences between this worksheet and the one we did in class. The main difference, of course, is that this table gives you the amount of the increase or decrease, NOT the price of the coffee per pound. You will have to figure out the actual price each month to graph.
*This is an accumulative total; do not go back to the original $3.10 every time, keep building on (or taking away from) the price each month.
*Please start your graph at $3.10 and recognize that you will dip below the month in July when you subtract the first loss. Don't worry, you'll pop back up in August and be fine for the rest of the graph.
*You do not "need" to draw in the mean line, but you will draw the line of best fit. You may draw in the other line if you want to compare the two though. ;-)
Get used to thinking about those negative values and how they work in the big picture ... the concept is much easier than the equations themselves, but the better you understand how they work, the easier they will be.

Assignment: 3 - Definitions & Examples, 1 Summary
In this assignment you are to interview three different people regarding negative numbers. Be sure your interviewee knows what a negative number is before you begin. Dogs, significantly younger siblings, and aliens do not apply.
Write in detail!
*Only one person may be a current NOVA student OR teacher and it may not be another 6th grader or TMac, Mo, or Mr. Gacek. Note that it is not required that you have a NOVA student or teacher.
*You may conduct your interview over the phone; there is no excuse not to be able to find three different people.
*Write in the name (and relationship) of each person to you.
*3 Definitions should be written in as much detail as the person gives you. Do not worry about total accuracy at this time; your interviewee might be rusty, but it should be pretty close (see above). ;-)
*3 Examples: your three examples (one per person) must all be different. I would word the second question something like this -
"I need you to give me a real life example, other than 'in math class,' or, 'in a math equation,' where you would need to represent something as a negative number."
Push them on this a bit, okay? They can do it!
*1 Summary: This is a short, concise, easy to understand summary of what you think a negative number is. Write your summary as if you are explaining the concept of a negative number to someone who does NOT know.

USE THE GRAPH on the front side of the sheet to answer the questions.
Be sure to write in the scale on the left of the graph (it is given to you in the directions).
Draw lines, use logical estimates, and be as accurate as you can be using only the graph.
DO NOT DO QUESTION #5!!!!
For the second side, draw the lines using a ruler and the information you are given; this graph should look similar to the first side with different information, eh?
Make sure to color code your lines in the key.
Answer questions 6 - 10 using only the graph as your guide.
We will get into unit pricing later, but for now we're just using the graph.

Create a paper airplane
This is an effort based grade based upon:
*you must use a full, single sheet of 8 1/2 x 11 copy paper. It can definitely be colored, but it cannot be "construction" paper. I do have paper for you if you need, but first check on the back table of room one.
*you may cut your plane to make flaps.
*you may not add anything else to your plane, including weights.
*you may use clear Scotch tape only, but not so much that it serves as extra weight.
*you may not use any other kind of tape.
*you should decorate your plane, including your name.
*you should spend more than 4 minutes creating your plane and it should look like you did. Look on the internet, ask someone, test it out. This IS your plane for the duration of this unit, so do a good job of it.
*you should not build your plane in carpool, during class, or at break; it won't be "effortful" enough ... and I know what effort is.
When you bring your plane to school, please park your plane in your room #1 airplane hangar so that it doesn't get squished or bent in any way.
-Please do not fly them in the classroom or the hallways.
-Respect all planes; do not touch or mess with anyone else's plane.
THANKS! Fasten your seatbelts and prepare for flight.

Assignment: Fall Math Self-Reflection
Please note that this assignment is referred to as an "Online Quiz" in your TeacherEasepage, but that is only because that is the only way I have found to create an assignment that you can answer in essay form online. It is not a quiz, just to be clear. ;-)
*Go to your TeacherEase account.
*Select "Assignments" or look in the "This Week at a Glance" column on the right of your home page. This will take you to a description of the assignment.
*Note the "Fall Math Self-Reflection" assignment referred to as the "Mo'Survey"assignment and select, "Take Quiz."
Remember that until you "submit" your survey, you can close it and continue working on it later.
Your answers need to be thoughtful and thorough; I am asking you to spend at least three minutes writing about each question, but you can write as much more as you want to!
I enjoy reading your responses, so don't worry about writing tooooo much.
If you select the "hints" button that is attached to each of the individual questions, I have written some ideas if you need help starting to think about the question and how you might respond to it. There is a wide variety of ways of thinking about each one.
This assignment is worth one point per answer, so make sure what you write shares your thinking completely.
Due by midnight Saturday, but Friday at the latest.

Assignment: Fun with Measurement? - Link!
You may ask anyone for help with this worksheet and you may look up HOW to solve for the answers, but you may not “look up” the answers. No calculators may be used; show your work where needed! I repeat, you may learn HOW to do the answers, but you may not GET the answers ... that part you figure out for yourself. ;-)

Homework for Thursday, October 26
Assignment: Test Corrections
Please note that this is an assignment in itself, it does NOT change your test score.
You will be scored based upon the number of correct corrections you make. If you don't actually correct it, then it's still incorrect, eh?
*Please CIRCLE the errors in your work
*Please IDENTIFY the specific error you made in the "Reason(s) Missed" column.
*Please REWORK the problem correctly.
*Please write your NEW ANSWER in the "new answer" box.
ALL of these steps are worth points.
If you received 100% on this test and are therefore correcting my mistakes, please follow the same steps as above using the equation on the back of the test corrections sheet.
Everyone: Please indicate whether you are retaking the test with "yes" or "no."
If you ARE retaking the test, please indicate which retake option you would prefer.
*Note: the retest will have the same types of problems, but the numbers will be different.
Due Friday
*Test corrections handed in on Friday, complete with parent signatures will receive one candy point to be awarded on Monday in class. This is true whether or not you missed any on the actual test! Test corrections may certainly be handed in late, but will not receive a candy point. (except Livvy who has a planned absence) ;-)

Assignment: Write Mo a Note!
What do you need to do to prepare for the test tomorrow? You can practice a worksheet (see links from this past month), do a Quizlet set, write a Quizlet set, study with a parent, etc. Whatever you do, send Mo an email or write a note and put it into her in-box on Wednesday morning.
Notes:
*Napping and eating, while good things to do, do not count for this particular assignment.
*Whatever you do must be relevant to order of operations and/or central tendencies.
*NEW! Practice with central tendencies and questions, key included - Link!
*This assignment may NOT be turned in late. It needs to be to Mo by your math period tomorrow.
*I will not be checking email between 12:30 and 5:00, so be patient please if you have a question. ;-)

*Alert! If you are doing the worksheet, number 7 begins with "53" when in fact it should be 5 to the third power. It is correctly written through the Link below.
Assignment: Quizlet or Worksheet
*your choice!
Worksheet - Practice Ops with key - Link!
Follow the directions on the page to get full credit: solve, correct, then correct any mistakes with a correcting pen or pencil. I need to be able to see what you did incorrectly and that you know how to fix it.
Quizlet -
Complete 10 problems correctly from the choice of sets below.
Please note: you should complete your set in WRITE mode, not LEARN mode. "Write" mode will track of the number you get correct; so work until you get 10 correct.
The sets you may choose from are not in order, but they are listed by date:
*New! Challenge Ops (only select this set if you are super solid and feel 100% prepared for the test on Wednesday)
*Order of Ops - Test level (October 2016)
*Central Tendencies (October 2013)
*Order of Ops - more basics (October 2012)
*Order of Ops with exponents (October 2011)
*Order of Ops #1 (October 2011)
You should work until you get 10 correct in "Write" mode.
To receive credit, send Mo an email that says, "I have completed 'x' Quizlet set," take a screen shot or "print" the page and put it into Mo's basket (don't forget your name!), or write a note stating which set you completed and have a parent sign it.

Complete at least one set by Friday, October 20.
You may complete more than one set, but only ONE per night.
Please note: you should complete your set in WRITE mode, not LEARN as I stated in class. The Learn mode has changed and is not what I'm looking for. "Write" mode keeps track of the number you get correct; you also do not get the multiple choice and/or blank options. This is good. ;-)

Assignment: Make the Data Fit - Link!
This is an effort based assignment. The idea is that you will attempt to solve these problems, not that you will necessarily complete them ... some of them are tough! Use the organizational skills you have learned from our in-class activities, especially the sticky-note graphs.
Please follow the directions completely before you begin because the directions give you the standards for which you are grading yourself: no distractions: no music, no television, no conversations, no help, no nothing.
*You do NOT need to work on these problems in order.
*Set a timer for 15 minutes of uninterrupted time and try your best to puzzle these out.
*When the timer goes off, grade yourself using the scale on the worksheet.
*If you feel you are distracted, your mind is drifting, you haven't tried as much as you have been frustrated and stuck, then lower your score accordingly. The grading scale on the worksheet is a guideline.
WHEN YOU ARE DONE and AFTER YOU HAVE GRADED YOURSELF, you may work on these problems more and even work with a parent or other puzzle-minded person if you’d like, but it is not required. Your grade for this assignment is based on your scoring of yourself using the above requirements, not upon completion of the assignment. This is brain math-aerobics!Due Wednesday

Assignment: Order of Ops Pre-Quiz - Link!
The purpose of this worksheet is to assess (both for you and for me) your understanding of how the order of operations work in equations. This is not intended to imply that you should know everything on this worksheet, it is to give us a place to start from together. Consequently ...
This worksheet is graded only on being complete, partially complete, or incomplete.
*Complete papers show every step of your work, whether or not your answers are ultimately correct.
*Partially complete papers may have missing work and/or unanswered problems.
*Incomplete papers have no work and/or too many questions unattempted.
Please show me EVERY step that you do. I need to see what you already know, what you almost know, and what you do not know. If you have no idea what to do first, you can ask for help or just take your best guess!

Assignment: Counting Pets
*Note - there is NOT a digital copy of this assignment, so if you forgot to pick one up you will need to nab one tomorrow.
Figure out which graph to use to answer each question. They are mixed up and some are not even answerable, so think about the data you need, what the question is asking, and what is, therefore, relevant to the question.
If you believe a question cannot be answered with the given graphs, state clearly what information you would need to answer the question.

Assignment: Flea Market Frequencies - Link!
On this worksheet you will see a list of 40 sale prices for items that were sold at the imaginary flea market. They are in random chaos order, but fortunately you are not required to organize them for this assignment ... unless you decide you need to? You will, however, be responsible for tallying each of the sold items in the appropriate boxes of the given frequency table.
*Note, the tallies for the items selling between $16 - $20 has been completed by the worksheet designer, so mark those items off the list before you begin!
One you have them all tallied, complete the Histogram (once again, the $16 - $20 category is completed already) by shading in the appropriate boxes, then answer the questions using whichever data set is easiest for you to use.
Do also note that the numerical data in the frequency table and the histogram are organized in bundles of information ... but they are still numerical ... right?
You may use color if you would like it to look interesting, but it is not required. ACCURACY of your tallies and histogram making is what matters.

Assignment: Perfect 10 ws - Link
In this assignment, you have been given "10" as the answer to the question. Your job is to figure out which of the central tendencies "10" represents in each of the given number sets. Then using the central tendency that you determine is the answer, fill in the blanks for the "Fun Fact" with the corresponding letter to the problem number at the bottom of the page. The answer will be two actors that you most likely do not know, so ask your parents if your answer looks reasonable!
*Definitions for each of the central tendencies are given at the top of the worksheet; you should also have the definitions we recreated in class in your notes.
No calculators are allowed for this assignment and you need to show your work (any needed math computations) on either the front or back of the worksheet, OR on another sheet of paper that you attach to this worksheet. Be efficient! ;-)

Assignment: Sodas Consumed ws - Link!
Remember that the "tricky" part of this worksheet is thinking about how the bar graph represents actual DATA. We've collected random chaos, made organized lists, and figured the central tendencies from that data. Now you need to convert the graph (whether in your head or on paper) back to the collection of data in order to determine those again. Don't think like a first grader, think like the growing mathematical you!
*You are not required to convert the graphs back into data on paper, but you do need to think about what that data would look like as a list. hint hint hint!
*When asked to explain how you got your answer, write an answer! The key is to seeing how you think mathematically ... that is actually the challenge of this assignment.
Due Friday
*The in-class work with your numerical data and graph is NOT homework. We will get back to these on Monday. ;-)

Assignment: Numerical Survey
This time your survey is to be numerically based.
1) Come up with your question to which the answer is a number. Using the starter of, "How many ..." is a good indicator that your question is numerical.
*Make sure that it is not a "category," like "What is your favorite number?"
2) LIST the answers, do not tally them.
*Example - 0, 2, 4, 0, 1 is a list of numbers. "I have two zeroes and one four" is not.
3) Survey 20 people, not 6th graders.

Homework for Tuesday, September 12
Assignment: Mean, Median, Mode ws (link!)
This IS a longer assignment, so take your time to be accurate as it will save you more time in the future. You must turn in your work with this assignment whether it is on the front or back of the worksheet OR on another sheet of paper that you staple to the worksheet.
*First, create your ordered list.
*Count carefully the number of numbers in each set of data; you want to divide by the correct number.
*Add carefully when determining your mean, otherwise you will end up with crazy numbers as answers. Please note that crazy numbers as answers mean you did something incorrectly, so rather than divide incessantly, add the numbers up again.
*Note that the "mean" may be a decimal; you may also write it as a fraction or with a remainder if you need to. As a hint, this only applies to the "Test Scores" and "Homerun" mean categories. The only mode with a decimal answer is "Hourly Wages."
Accuracy is extremely important in math, so work carefully with no distractions. Again, you may not use calculators and all of your work must be turned in with the assignment.
