Select from the following assignments tonight.
Please note that I have a link for "how to" multiply and divide negatives on the Mo'Help tab of this blog. Go there if you are already questioning what we learned in class today.
Your choices, in order of difficulty are:
*Negative Multiplication and Division Equations
*Negative Mini Ops
*Negative Ops +, x, ÷ only
*Negative Order of Ops A (all operations)
Yes, you can do more than one, but be sure that you feel prepared to to tackle the problems!

Assignment: Real Life Negatives C
We went over this in class today: you MUST write the correct equation in the order it is shown before solving. Your equation MUST be written as an addition problem and it must be solvable in the equation as you write it ... meaning parentheses are fine as long as they do not change the answer.
How you organize it to solve it and having the correct solution are the secondary parts.
Knowing how to set up an equation from verbal (written) information is super important!

Homework for Thursday, December 6
Assignment: The Other Side ...
You should have received your pre-quiz back during the CWP period today. Please do NOT worry about or correct the equations, those are simply to reference the areas that you understand and those where you need to work.
Your homework is "The Other Side..." also identified as the Discussion side.
Please answer the questions completely for full credit effort.
Do your best on the bottom section with central tendencies.
Due Friday
Sadie and Maggie, you cannot do this assignment tonight because it is connected to what we did in class today. You will take the pre-quiz when you get back, then complete the other side.
For those of you who left your pre-quiz at school, you will need to wait to do it tomorrow.

Assignment: Mystery Picture -
- Link to directions! -
I cannot upload the coordinate grid, but you can create your own on anky piece of graph paper. Make sure your "0,0" coordinate is in the center of the paper with at least 14 each direction on the x-axis and 20 each direction on the y-axis.
To read coordinate points, the first number represents the x (positive - right, or negative - left) and the y is the second number (positive - up, or negative - down).
Follow the directions. Connect points with lines and color as instructed.

Assignment: Battleship
Today you are to create your answer key for the Battleship game.
1) Plot any point using the 12 x 12 graph you received in class. Record that point.
2) Draw the diagonal lines that MUST bisect the corners of each box, meaning that they radiate from the points at 45-degree angles. These lines must be drawn straight, be accurate, and be in pencil or black pen.
3) Color the sections according to the key we will all be using: Blue = north, Green = east, Yellow = south, Red = west. You should have this key from the notes we took today.
You will be graded on the accuracy of your point, lines, and key.
Due Wednesday
*Jada, Kevin, and Cyrus: you cannot do this homework tonight without the proper paper. Just wait until you get back; this assignment is not time-consuming in and of itself.

Assignment: Real Life Negatives B - Link!
Same as last week, your task is to make sense of the problem and solve for the question. We're still not concerned with what it looks like in an equation, but we have practiced a lot of visual thinking lately. We will be seeing equations on worksheets soon ... don't rush it!
*When you get to the mean, range, and median questions (#5) use what you know about these terms to answer the question. Use the given VALUES ... . think of number lines and what the numbers represent, then what value the answer would have. Draw yourself a picture if you need to; you do have the tools to solve these, but you need to use them!
Be sure to write all of your work on the paper so I can see how you are solving them.
Calculators are not allowed; I'm hoping that goes unsaid. ;-)

Assignment: Coffee Prices Part 2 - Link!
You will notice some similarities and some differences between this worksheet and Coffee Prices Part 1. The main difference, of course, is that this table gives you the amount of the increase or decrease, NOT the price of the coffee per pound. You will have to figure out the actual price each month to graph.
*This is an accumulative total; do not go back to the original $3.10 every time, keep building on (or taking away from) the price each month.
*It is indeed safe to start your graph at $3.10. Although you will be adding and subtracting values, the price of coffee will never dip below $3.10.
*You do not "need" to draw in the mean line, but you will draw the line of best fit, The line of best fit represents how YOU think of it, not the fancy algorithmic value. You may draw in the mean line if you want to compare the two though. ;-)
Get used to thinking about those negative values and how they work in the big picture ... the concept is much easier than the equations themselves, but the better you understand how they work, the easier they will be.
PLEASE USE A RULER TO MAKE YOUR LINES.

Assignment: Real Life Negatives - A ... Link!
Welcome to the "real" world (as real as it gets in these examples) of negative integers. Today you are to focus on what you are doing not how you write it.
Mo's advice:
*Think about what the numbers represent. Draw pictures on the page or in your mind, but use your imagination to think about the story behind the question.
*Associate! These numbers all have values that go in a direction: towards zero or away from zero. So if you go down the steps at Hogwarts, all of those downward steps represent going DOWN (aka a negative number, fyi) and all of the times you go UP get you higher (a positive direction). Again, picture the story.
*HOW you solve these problems should be common sense. I'm not at all concerned how you represent it mathematically, I want to know where you end up: behind the starting point? above sea level? above zero? with less money? How can you collect the values of the numbers and use them to come up with an answer?
Think about what you know to be true and then figure out how to get to that point.
EXAMPLES: each with different answers, yet essentially the same numbers ...
A) If your horse is 7 miles away from Olympia, and runs for 5 miles towards Olympia, rests, then runs 4 more miles in the same direction, he ends up 2 miles PAST Olympia, right? Right!
B) If your horse is 7 miles away from Olympia, and begins running to Olympia for 5 miles, but realized he forgot his baby horse, so he runs backwards for 4 miles, he is now 6 miles away from (before) Olympia, right? Try drawing that scenario.
*The rest of it is up to you. I strongly, strongly recommend drawing yourself a simple scenario and figuring out what it is you want to know. Don't worry about the negatives or positives, just think about what they represent in the story. I keep saying this because it is key to your "aha" moment!
*And yes, labels are VERY important ... you MUST label your answers (either with words or a negative sign) to get full credit.
* I do have a copy of this assignment and here it is!
Due Thursday - try to enjoy it. ;-)

Homework for Tuesday, November 27
Assignment: Draw Four, Check One (the title is the link)
Draw Four: First complete the four problems using VISUAL models, probably on ANOTHER sheet of paper. We have practiced this skill, so the expectation is that you will be able to represent these stories in this way. Only after you have a visual should you apply the numbers and come up with your answer.
Ultimately you should have an answer, but its correctness is only half of the value of the points. The other half is showing me how you worked through the problems using your visual cues.
Check One: Select one of the problems to have an older sibling, neighbor, or adult solve ... essentially a non-current-NOVA person. Give them the problem (and a blank piece of paper) and encourage them to show you all of their work so you can see their thinking. Feel free to ask questions afterward if you do not understand what they did, but in general, you should be able to tell.
Then your task is to analyze their work. Did they work it out in the same way as you did or differently? Were there common elements in your work? Did they use all numbers or did they represent it visually too? Did you even get the same answer?!?! Write at least three sentences of your observations; you may write these directly on their work page.
P.S. You can give the problems out to multiple people if you want to, just to see how they will do. ;-)
Have fun!

Assignment: The Best Bargains - Link!
USE THE GRAPH on the front side of the sheet to answer the questions.
Be sure to write in the scale on the left of the graph (it is given to you in the directions).
Draw lines, use logical estimates, and be as accurate as you can be using only the graph.
DO NOT USE EQUATIONS!
For the second side, draw the lines using a ruler and the information you are given; this graph should look similar to the first side with different information, eh?
Make sure to color code your lines in the key.
Answer questions 5 - 9 using only the graph as your guide.
We will get into unit pricing later, but for now we are just using the graph.
Due Tuesday

Welcome to Kyle's world! Many of you will get frustrated with Kyle, but know that he is here to help you make sense of decimals. You may NOT use a calculator for these problems. While it might be painful, you'll be mathematically stronger because of him. ;-)
Kyle hints:
*Kyle does not live where he works.
*Kyle works a set number of hours per day, but not every day of the week.
*Kyle is an avid bike rider.
*Bus tickets are one-way only.
*Kyle changes employment often ... hence everything will change.
Take your time solving Kyle's problems. Are you using the correct operations? Is your arithmetic correct? Does your answer make sense?

Assignment: Quizlet
Complete 8 problems correctly in WRITE mode.
"Write" mode keeps track of the number you get correct; you also do not get the multiple choice and/or blank options you would in "test" mode. This is good. ;-)
The sets you may choose from are listed in order from least difficult to most complex.
Note that "Test Level" ops are the level you are expected to master by tomorrow!
*Central Tendencies
*Order of Ops - #1 basics
*Order of Ops - more basics
*Order of Ops - Test level
*Order of Ops with exponents
*Order of Ops - Challenge ops
You should work until you get 8 correct in "Write" mode.
To receive credit you have several options that we went over in class today:
1) send Mo an email that says, "I have completed 'x' Quizlet set," 2) take a screen shot and email it to me or 3) "print" the page and put it into Mo's basket (don't forget your name!), or 4) Turn in the paper where you worked the problems and identify which set you completed.
Due Thursday
*Come prepared for the test with whatever helps you relax and feel focused! Bring your confidence with you too. ;-)

Assignment: One of Two ...
Correct your pre-quiz -
Today you received your pre-quiz back. If you missed 3 or more problems, you are required to write out all of the steps and correct those that you missed.
*This is the assignment, it is not a "redone" assignment. It will be graded based upon the percentage of your redone problems that you redo correctly.
*The test looks a heckuva lot like this with different numbers ... imagine that! So make sure you understand each type of problem on this pre-quiz.
Reverse Operations - Link!
This assignment is for those who missed 2 or fewer on the pre-quiz. It is not easy and will take time in spite of their being only 6 equations. Work carefully and look for patterns ... try and try again.
*There may be MORE than one bracket per equation; insert as many as you need to reach the given solution.
(do check over any you missed on the pre-quiz to make sure you avoid those mistakes again!)
Due Tuesday
Correct your pre-quiz -
Today you received your pre-quiz back. If you missed 3 or more problems, you are required to write out all of the steps and correct those that you missed.
*This is the assignment, it is not a "redone" assignment. It will be graded based upon the percentage of your redone problems that you redo correctly.
*The test looks a heckuva lot like this with different numbers ... imagine that! So make sure you understand each type of problem on this pre-quiz.

Assignment: Slugville - Link!
Today we practiced figuring out how manipulating data can be used "accurately" to make a statement. Whether or not we agree on the inference depends on how we think about the data.
In today's assignment, ALL of the candidates are using the same data and are truthful in their accounts, but each is using it differently. Identify what they did and then answer the follow-up questions.

Note that "Test Level" ops are the level you are expected to master by test time.

Assignment: Flea Market Frequencies - Link!
On this worksheet, you will see a list of 40 sale prices for items that were sold at the imaginary flea market. They are in random chaos order, but fortunately you are not required to organize them for this assignment ... unless you decide you need to? You will, however, be responsible for tallying each of the sold items in the appropriate boxes of the given frequency table.
*Note, the first four tallies on the list have been completed by the imaginary Finn & Francis, so you do not need to count them again!
One you have them all tallied, complete the Histogram (once again, the first four are done) by shading in the appropriate boxes, then answer the questions using whichever data set is easiest for you to use.
Do also note that the numerical data in the frequency table and the histogram are organized in bundles of information ... but they are still numerical ... right?
You may use color if you would like it to look interesting, but it is not required. ACCURACY of your tallies and histogram making is what matters.

Assignment: Make the Data Fit - Link!
This is an effort based assignment. The idea is that you will attempt to solve these problems, not that you will necessarily complete them ... some of them are tough! Use the organizational skills you have learned from our in-class activities, especially the sticky-note graphs.
Please follow the directions completely before you begin because the directions give you the standards for which you are grading yourself: no distractions: no music, no television, no conversations, no help, no nothing.
*You do NOT need to work on these problems in order.
*Set a timer for 15 minutes of uninterrupted time and try your best to puzzle these out.
*When the timer goes off, grade yourself using the scale on the worksheet.
*If you feel you are distracted, your mind is drifting, you haven't tried as much as you have been frustrated and stuck, then lower your score accordingly. The grading scale on the worksheet is a guideline.
WHEN YOU ARE DONE and AFTER YOU HAVE GRADED YOURSELF, you may work on these problems more and even work with a parent or other puzzle-minded person if you’d like, but it is not required. Your grade for this assignment is based on your scoring of yourself using the above requirements, not upon completion of the assignment. This is brain math-aerobics!Due Thursday

Assignment: Sodas ws - Link!
Yes, it's another adventure in graph reading!
REAL graph reading. ;-)
Remember that the "tricky" part of this worksheet is thinking about how the bar graph represents actual DATA. We've collected random chaos, made organized lists, and figured the central tendencies from that data. Now you need to convert the graph (whether in your head or on paper) back to the collection of data in order to determine those again. Don't think like kindergartner you, think like the growing mathematical you!
*I recommend drawing clear, straight lines on the graph. Use a ruler!
*You are not required to convert the graphs back into data on paper, but you do need to think about what that data would look like as a list. hint hint hint!
*When asked to explain how you got your answer, write an answer! The key is to see how you think mathematically ... that is actually the challenge of this assignment.

Assignment: Notes - Mean, Median, and Mode
Define the words mean, median, and mode (only) on the notes paper I handed out in class. If you lost or forgot your copy, please use the link above (the title of this assignment) to print out another copy. If you'd rather, you can write it out on another piece of paper, but you will still need to transfer your work onto your notes sheet.
You should NOT rely on the internet for your definitions and examples, rather have conversations with knowledgeable people and write these in your own words. Please do not rely on your own definitions at this time either; I want you to talk about these and broaden your use of them!
We will continue to add to this worksheet in class. ;-)

Assignment: Survey 5
In this assignment, we are collecting data in search of meaningful patterns.
The question is simple: "Name a fruit juice."
Remember, this is not a brand, but a type of fruit. Think lemon, lime, apple, orange, etc. But don't give examples, just reframe the question if they give you an incorrect answer.
*Interview 5 people, one of whom is you.
*The people must not be current NOVA students or teachers unless you are related to them.
Identify each person and their answer.
That's it!

Assignment: Finding Perimeters
There is no online copy of this assignment.
Find the perimeters of these polygons. Remember that what you see is what it is unless identified otherwise. In other words, if they only list one side of a figure that looks like a square, it is a square. If they show an irregular shape that looks easily divisible into equal parts, assume they are equal parts not random decimals.
This is how Geometry operates. ;-)

Assignment: Flower Power - Link!
Use the table and proportions to organize your work.
There are only 7 questions on this page, but three of them are complex! Take your time, think about them carefully, and don't be afraid when you realize they're not simple. Work through it until you understand what you are doing.
#5 and #6: These can also be solved as two-step problems. We went over these in class ... figure out what you know, use your labels, and it's okay if you don't get the answer in one step.
#7: There is no redo option for this question. Both parts, the "yes" or "no" and the "why" or "why not" must be completely explained. I will be picky about your reasoning!

Hello beautiful people! Let me begin by saying I left ALL of the data at school from our dice rolls today. If you would like to see the data, please send me an email and I will go get it sooner rather than later. But maybe you remember enough about our rolls or you have your own theories or done some research. In any case, it's not about guessing "right," it's about having a theory at all. Think of this as the follow-up to opening our M&M bag and making an educated guess ...
We WILL talk about this tomorrow. ;-)
For tonight -

Write out what you believe is the best strategy for playing the dice rolling game we played today. Keep in mind that theory and actual results are two different things ... for a reason. So, how do you place your beans and why?
Remember to pencil sketch in an X where you will be placing your beans during class. Note that if you do not HAVE the grid I gave you, write down exactly where you place your 20 beans.
Then we'll see how the dice roll!
*Anyone without completed homework will be disqualified from tomorrow's game.
Due Thursday
We WILL talk about this tomorrow. ;-)

Homework for Tuesday, May 8
Assignments in your folder:
1) Reflections on a Life - Link!
The primary thing I want to stress to you here is to WRITE A LOT.
Be specific, let me know what you are thinking. Work to make connections between the life you were forced to "live" with the life you hope to live. Ask a parent if you are stuck; these connections are what make this unit worth living.
*Reflections may be typed or handwritten.
2) Budget Guidelines part 2
On your yellow sheet, make sure to begin subtracting your purchases from your NMI. When you get to savings & charity you should know how much you have left to spend; this is a good time to complete that worksheet as well.
All of your money must be allocated somewhere, not just hanging out in your pockets. Make sure your final total is "0" indicating that you know where all your money has been spent or saved.
3) Checklist and Mo's Grading sheet: Link!
This is your checklist of assignments, but it's also where I will list your scores for each of the assignments. Once folders are handed in on May 15, there will be no more redoing of assignments, so be sure you are happy with your work. ;-)

Meet in room #4 at 8:00 with your lunch.
Ms. Hubbard will greet you and load you onto the bus ... see you at the Finance Park!
Last Book Assignment: Lawn Care, page 21 - 22
Pay attention to the vocabulary! Fixed costs, variable costs, etc. Some of the information you need is on page 21, so do read it.
Revenue is the money you earn (#1). Later (#4) they refer to it as income, but the formula they give you to use still calls it revenue. That is how you figure out your profit in each scenario.
