Homework: Halloween Eve

Assignment:  Create a paper airplane

This is an effort based grade based upon:
*you must use a single sheet of 8 1/2 x 11 copy paper.
*you may use Scotch tape only.
*you may cut your plane to make flaps.
*you should decorate your plane, including your name.
*you should spend more than 2 minutes creating your plane TONIGHT.  Look on the internet, ask someone, test it out.  This IS your plane for the duration of this unit, so do a good job of it.
*you may not use any other kind of tape.
*you may not add anything else to your plane, including weights.
*you should not build your plane in carpool tomorrow morning; it won't be "effortful" enough ... and I know what effort is.
*you will lose a point if your plane is late - DUE THURSDAY at the beginning of the day.
When you get to school tomorrow, please come park your plane in your room #1 airplane hangar so that it doesn't get squished or bent in any way.
-Please do not fly them in the classroom or the hallways.
-Respect all planes; do not touch or mess with anyone else's plane.

Assignment:  Decimal Ordering ws
As I looked over this worksheet, I realized that it would be a good little review for everyone regardless of whether or not they'd "passed" the decimal ordering section on the pre-quiz.  Hopefully you will find it easy!
*This worksheet is kind of tightly organized; please help me out and circle your answers.  ;-)
*Think carefully about your place values ... that's the (decimal) point! haha

Homework for Monday, Oct. 29

Assignment:  Decimals #1
For this assignment, you either received practice in subtraction or an addition application worksheet.
*For the subtraction practice make sure that you set up your problems by aligning the decimals and adding zeros if necessary.
- Think money: if you have $1.00 and subtract $0.75 you need those zeros! 
- Remember: you will never, ever, ever ... forget how to subtract decimals again.
*For the addition application practice worksheet, you should add to get your answers.  
- Be sure to show all of your work somewhere on the page or on an attached sheet of paper.
- You may need to look up some definitions of the polygons and terms used in the problems, but that's just fine!  Go for it.
- Also for this worksheet:  l = length, w = width, and s = side

Assignment: 3 Interviews and 1 Teaching Moment
 The Interviews -
You are to interview 3 different people and ask them, "How do you define a decimal number?"
- You are to write down who they are along with their explanation (do not worry whether or not they are correct).
- You are not to interview other NOVA students (unless it's your sibling) or NOVA teachers.
 The Teaching Moment - 
You are to explain in your own words, using illustrations and examples as needed, why it is necessary to line up the decimal when adding.  Assume that you are teaching this skill to someone who either does not know or remember how to add decimal numbers. 
*Turn this all in on one piece of paper.  Make sure that it is organized in a way I can read it!

Assignment:  Test Corrections 
 *This is a homework assignment; these corrections do not count back towards your test points.
*If you would like help remembering all of the directions to this assignment, please click on this link where I have written it all down for you.  Seriously ... go there!
*You are responsible for correcting every problem that you missed (or that Mo missed if you got 100%).  If you showed your work, this step will be much easier for you!  If you did not show every step, you need to figure it out.  Seriously. 
*Reasons like "I forgot," "I don't know," and "I made a mistake," are NOT acceptable answers!  Pretend like you are the teacher helping you identify your mistake and learn from it.  This assignment is about that learning.
*Be sure to correct your mistake(s) correctly.  If you miss a correction, it's still incorrect.
*Retests will be held the week of October 29 - November 2 during Gruel.  You will let me know which day you would like to retest (if you want to retest) and then you will be responsible for going during that lunch period where Maestra or Ms. Funchion will have your retest there for you.  You will receive your best test score for you final grade.
Your test corrections are due with a parent signature during math class on Monday, October 22 for one candy point.  Even if you forget it on Monday, you will still need to turn it in with the parent signature for credit asap.

It's true.  We had our first test in class today and you deserve the night off from math homework.
*Test scores have been entered into TeacherEase.
*Tomorrow students will get their tests back and learn how to do test corrections.
*Retests will be the week after conferences in Gruel.  Students will have the option of retaking and receiving their best test score to represent their mastery of the order of operations.

Well, we're moving along through these at a nice pace!  Please don't panic if it seems like we're moving too quickly ... it's all within your reach and I am doing my best to make sure your assignments reflect YOUR pace. 
*This is your third individualized assignment.  It should stretch you a bit, but not too much.
*Please do your best to turn in your homework each day as that is how I determine which assignment you will receive next.  
*Today in class we talked about showing all of your work.  You should realize by now that I'm serious.  Very, very soon I will not accept papers without the work attached.  It's such an important skill (besides that it helps me help you) that I will be very insistent!

Assignment:  What Does it Mean?  worksheet
*Be careful when determining your central tendencies.  If you mess it up at the start, you will mess up the entire worksheet.
*Answer the questions like the intelligent non-2nd grade person that you are.  Use some of the fabulous vocabulary and be specific in your reasoning.  Questions 4 - 6 are worth two points each and I won't give those points easily!
*Feel free to ask your parents "what" the question is asking if you aren't sure that you understand it.  It should be apparent from the way the question is worded, but ask if you don't feel that it is.
