Homework for Monday, January 29
GCF and Factoring - Link!
Use the methods we practiced in class today to solve problems 1 - 6.
*For 1 - 3, you list all of the common factors
*For 4 - 6, you must build a factor tree and find the prime factorization.
For the remaining problems, use your smarts! Can you utilize either of the previous methods or do you have your own ideas? Go for it! The answers are singular, but the means of getting there are many.

Assignment: Quizlet - Speed Fractions
Select one set of the following fraction sets on my Quizlet page to practice in Gravity mode for 5 minutes altogether. Set a timer and if you do something else for even a minute, be sure to add that minute back in. You MAY practice longer if your heart desires. ;-)
After you select Gravity but before you begin to play you will be asked what level you want to practice and that decision is yours, but I feel like "medium" is a great choice for most of you ... some of you are more than prepared for high! Be sure to remember to put the "/" in between your numerator and denominator as in 5 1/2 = 11/2.
-You may practice either of the following sets, but keep in mind they are not organized together unless you have created a folder specifically for them or alphabetize the list. Both options have "fractions" in their title and the sets you may select from today include:
*Fractions: Renaming Mixed to Improper (what we did in class)
*Fractions: Renaming Improper to Mixed
-When you have completed your 5 minutes of speed practice, you may either select "print," bring a parent note, or send me an email letting me know you have completed this assignment.
-This is a pass/no pass assignment, so please put solid effort into it for your own benefit.

Assignment: Bingo Card
Today you received your Fraction Bingo cards. Unfortunately, there are no copies of this assignment online so you will need to pick up your card the next time you come to class. Notes for this assignment are:
*Fraction Cards must be colored neatly.
*Your choice of what fraction to color each circle is yours, but ...
*You may color no more than two circles as wholes and ...
*All equivalent fractions for your choice, up to a denominator of 12, must also be written next to or in your circles. Examples: 2/5 is equivalent to 4/10 (and vice versa). 1/3 is equivalent to 2/6 to 3/9 to 4/12 (all must be listed). 1/7 has no equivalent with a denominator of 12 or less.
Be sure to count the circles carefully; there are divisions from one whole to twelfths.
Due on Thursday, January 25 so we can get to playing Bingo asap!

Assignment: Fraction Take-Home Pre-Unit - Link!
***FRONT SIDE ONLY***
This assignment is for you to wrap your head around fractions ... what is it that you remember, don't remember, never learned, and are comfortable with? This is a very self-directed unit for homework, and we will be spending our class time exploring HOW fractions are useful rather than on the basic arithmetic of them.
Anyway, this assignment is graded complete/partially complete/incomplete and it is not possible to get full credit if it is not complete by your math period on Wednesday. Get help if you need it, but don't worry too much about "learning" it all by tomorrow ... that's what this unit is for growing.
Due Wednesday by the beginning of the period

Assignment: Test Corrections!
Correctly correct, getting help as needed, any problems that you missed on the test. Make sure that your mistake is identified by WHAT you actually did incorrectly.
Be sure also to fill out the top section making no assumptions about whether or not I will assume correctly whether or not you want to retest. I will schedule the retests once I know the numbers and sections you are interested in retaking.

Assignment: Pre-Test Quizlet
It is the intent of this assignment to allow you to practice the area(s) with negative numbers that you need the most feedback in prior to the math test tomorrow. Obviously, you can practice for hours and hours, but the requirement is to get 10 problems correct to receive credit.
I suggest:
*Negatives add and sub basics
or
*Negatives addition and subtraction.
Both of these sets obviously practice the same skills, but give you different numbers in the problem sets. The second set uses larger numbers and includes some absolute value problems.
I also strongly suggest:
*Negative order of ops.
and
*Negative Integer Review which covers all of the operations, but not the order of operations.
and
*Negatives Comprehensive Review which covers all of the operations including the order of operations and central tendencies. This is essentially the bulk of the test content next week.
There is also:
*Real Life Negatives, but there will only be a few of these on the test and clearly require the above skills to complete, so choose this if you have trouble with the wording of these kinds of problems.
Required: Complete 10 questions correctly from one of the sets above in "Write" mode prior to the math test on Friday morning, January 19. Send Mo an email, or bring a signed note or a screenshot to class. To receive credit, this assignment may not be handed in late.

Assignment: Pre-Test Choice #1
Select from the following depending on your study needs. You may, as always, do more than one assignment, but the minimum is one!
*Adding and Subtracting Negatives - Link!
Recommended mastery of these skills prior to tackling the order of operations.
*Order of Operations A - Link!
Get yourself started on the order of operations with negatives. This worksheet was an option last Thursday, so make sure you have not already done it; you cannot receive credit for the same assignment twice.
*Order of Ops with Exponents - Link!
Tricky worksheet if you don't carefully handle your exponents attached to negatives. See the Mo'Help tab if you are still wondering how to handle them.
*Heckuva Order of Ops - Link!
These are long and involve many steps, so don't lose your negatives along the way! This worksheet requires that you write your steps out in detail.
*Pretest Study - page 1 - Link!
This section includes the basic operations and (Felix's favorite) central tendencies.

Homework for the long weekend ...
Assignment: Quizlet
Think of this as your homework for Monday evening so you don't get stressed about having homework this weekend, eh? However, you can do it anytime after today. ;-)

Assignment: Negative Order of Ops choice
You have four options tonight, but please complete the one that best fits your needs, not the one your friend is doing. Yes, you may complete more than one but yes, you owe me at least one of these.
*Basics 29 - Link!
This assignment was also an option on Tuesday, so you cannot turn it in again if you have already done so. This is the basic, two-step operations to get used to how negatives work with them.
*Basics 30 - Link!
This is the immediate follow-up to Basics 29 if you are still feeling the need for some basic practice.
*Order of Ops A - Link!
If your primary challenge is keeping track of steps more than reconciling the negatives, this one is for you. You should have a solid understanding of negatives in equations before tackling it though.
*Order of Ops with Exponents - Link!
Not worried about the steps or the negatives? Then how do you work with a negative that has an exponent ... or a negative quantity that attains an exponent once it breaks free of its bracket? This assignment is not for the faint of heart.

Assignment: Comprehensive Review of Negatives - Link!
Check yourself on these skills which will all be on the test next week.
a) can you compare two numbers?
b) central tendencies?
c) arithmetic and order of operations?
d) equations absolute value?
There are helpful hints on the "Mo'help" tab of this blog listed by subject, so check them out if you are stuck! Most of the rest of the review choices will be up to you, so pay attention to where you feel dodgy. ;-)

Assignment: Negative Mult/Division Choice
There is a bit of a variety here, from the basics to 2-step order of operations to pre-algebra. Please do whatever you are comfortable with ...
*Mult/Div Basics - Link!
Pay attention to the signs here: it is NOT the same as addition and subtraction. Two positive signs or two negative signs make the answer positive. One sign of each make the answer negative. Period.
*Negative Ops pg 29 - Link!
These are two-step ops and I want you to write out both steps so you get used to how the equations look. Yes, the math can be done in your head, but I want you to write the answer and the new equation.
Example: -5 + 4 x (-2) = -5 + (-8) = -3
These will get pretty complex, so being methodical now will serve you well later.
*1.7 Worksheet - Link!
This worksheet is mini-ops with only multiplication and division. (except for the table)
Think about each step: positive x negative x negative = positive x negative (negative answer) then x the third negative = a positive answer. WRITE OUT THE TWO STEPS.
Example: 5 x (-3) x (-4) = -15 x (-4) = 60

Big: (Link!) This was the "good" worksheet; practicing subtraction with larger numbers
Decimals: (Link!) Got subtraction nailed? Try it with decimals and you'll know you're ready to move on.
*Quizlet: Any Negative set, get 10 correct in "Write" mode, bring in a signed note, a screenshot, or send an email. This is an extra option, not to be used in place the regular homework.

Assignment: Plane Boxplot
I do not have a link for this assignment because it is critical that it be to scale and that cannot be guaranteed if you print it from here. Alas, it means you will need to pick up a copy from the classroom if you lost yours. :(
What you need to know:
*Use your approved 5-number summary to create your box plot.
*First label your graph to scale beginning with zero at the bottom and identifying every meter (every four lines).
*Graph your 5 points, then draw the whiskers and the boxes NEATLY.
Many people must redo this assignment because their lines are crooked and therefore inaccurate ... don't be one of those people!
Instructions for drawing your plot from your points are on the Mo'Help tab of this blog.
*You will need to calculate the central tendencies from your TWELVE flights, not from your 5-summary points. You may definitely use a calculator.

Negative Subtraction Basics - Link!
We're all doing the same worksheet today just to get the hang of this. Once we're in, you will be selecting your assignments again, so pay attention to your comfort level with these basic skills. It's definitely a quick worksheet ... so pay attention to what the equation tells you to do: add!
*what Mo? This is a subtraction worksheet?
*Yes, it sure looks that way, doesn't it? But can you find a way to add instead? Then find the difference if needed?
*Do I have to write it out that way?
*No, most of these you should be able to solve in your head, but I want you to think about it as adding the two numbers together...
Here's a Link to Mo're help!
This has been a Mo conversation with herself, thank you. ;-)

Real Life Negatives D - Link!
Like it says on the worksheet, some of these are tricky because I changed the wording from the previous "real life" worksheets. Make sure you are solving the answer it is asking for ... and did you keep track of things correctly? It's supposed to be tricky, by the way, so don't be misled by your previous successes. ;-)
One more recommendation: draw a picture/sketch of what is going on in the problem if you are a visual thinker like I am. Honestly, I still sketch out the scenarios to make sure I'm on the right track!
