Finance Park Book -
#8) Paycheck, pages 14 - 15 (18 points)
*Page 14 gives you an example of a paycheck. There are also three questions on this page that you will most likely need to ask an adult about. Please do! Each of those is worth one point.
*Page 15 requires that you use proportions to determine the taxes (deductions) for each of the three boxes (5 points per box). Please feel free to use a calculator. You should also round to the nearest CENT ... do not use decimals beyond the hundredth place. In other words, answers should come in the form of $123.45 not $123 nor $123.456789456789...
Aim for this Thursday to have this completed.
Other notes:
Pre-Tests (hand-out) must be turned in to Mo by Monday, May 4, or a late point will be deducted. Check it off in your workbook after you turn it in so that you remember to do so.
#7) Lawn Job, pages 21 - 22, we have gone over extensively in class.
*Please use page 21 as your source for fixed costs, variable costs, etc. There are three scenarios you are working through; most of the information is on this page.
*On page 22 work down the page using the information from 21; you may use a calculator too. Question #5 does have wrong answers ... think about how profit and loss are figured.
*Income is the money that is earned. You use the income to pay wages (how much the employee earns) and costs (fixed and variable). Explain that you understand income and how it helps you to pay wages and costs ... again, the concepts of profit and loss are used here.
As always, your parents will be extremely helpful; this is a hands-on discussion workbook!
Come prepared on Monday, May 4, to start living and balancing your life!

Homework for Tuesday, April 21 (My Ella's birthday!)
Assignment #4 in Finance Park Book:
#4 Career Research pages 17 & 18
*Please note that this is completely different from the directions in the workbook. These are the directions you need to follow:
*For this assignment you will research the career that you drew for your life.
There are suggestions on page 17 for where you might find information, one of them being a website they connect you with. I went to the website myself and found it somewhat difficult to navigate, but generally you should be able to find places to get the information you need.
*You will NOT fill in the table on page 18 in the way they have you fill it out. What we are going to do is this:
*The slots for "career 1" and "career 2" are for writing your findings.
- scratch out "career 1" and write "example 1" instead. "Career 2" should become "example 2."
Example: for "Matches my interests" write the types of interests someone in that career would probably have. Like a professional athlete would most likely be interested in 1) physical fitness, and 2) sports, yes?
Then in the slot for "career 3" you mark how well YOU personally match those interests. Scratch out "career 3" and write "Matches." Then use a 1 (not) to 5 (excellent) scale to indicate how well those things actually match what YOU feel.
Example: for professional athlete you might feel a "4" (indicating you are interested in physical fitness), but "1" (because you are not interested in playing sports much) and average that to a "2.5" for how you overall match the interests for your career.
Do this for each of the categories: what abilities do you need, what values, what is the median pay scale, etc. Research the career and ASK QUESTIONS if you have them. Some of the careers have a wide range of options, but you are just generalizing the information, so don't get too stressed out about it. I do expect you to research this though, don't just guess.
In the end you should have a general summary of your given career and how well you would actually match it ... if it were indeed your "real" career.
*We will talk about this more during the specialist period on Wednesday, so look it over at least and bring your questions to class.
Due Friday
Congratulations on getting a life today! Don't worry, there will be a lot more information and tasks to follow ... just get ready to buckle down and meet the challenges as they come. It's a wild ride. ;-)

Homework for Monday, April 20
Don't get TOO excited ... there will be other math homework this week even though we won't meet reguarly as a math class during the first hours of the day. You'll see; it's all a part of the master plan. ;-)
So, today you should have marked down your first three assignments in your Finance Park book:
1) Rate Your Interests, page 4 (1 point)
2) Rate Your Abilities, page 5 (1 point)
*These assignments were theoretically corrected today by your partner!
3) What Are Taxes? Overview, pages 12 - 13 (4 points)
*Do read all of the information on these pages before doing the work. Do talk to your parents about any questions you have as you do the work. The important thing is that you learn it!
*On page 12 this is not a yes or a no answer, it is meant to be reflective. Have a conversation with someone about the advantages and disadvantages, then come up with an opinion. Your opinion is not incorrect, but you have to share it to get credit for thinking. (2 points)
*On page 13 you need to accurately identify the items in the blanks (there is more than one set of answers). Again, don't guess, find out! (2 points)
*This assignment is due Friday. What this means is that if you want a score for it, have it done by the weekend and leave your book here in your airplane hangar.
I will get the Finance Page up soon! That is where you will be able to keep track of assignments as we go.
Tomorrow you will GET A LIFE!

Possible Weekend Task
If you are wanting to bank extra math points, remember that you can interview a parent (or two) this weekend. You are to write an outline of their career path/choices beginning at age 5. Remember that this needs to cover their first thoughts, things they ultimately considered, odd jobs, career changes, education, etc. It's interesting to ask and these conversations are an important part of this Finance Park unit.
One week left until the chickens begin hatching ... be sure to get your names in on the Mo'Eggs 15 page if you want it to be considered!
Enjoy the sunshine this weekend,
Mo ;-)

Homework for Thursday, April 16
Assignment: Probability of a Simple Event
More fun with spinners!
*Use the table to create your spinner. The number next to the item/color are how the spinner is done.
*Draw yourself the possibilities for #10 and use it for #11 too.
*Do problem #12 on the back of the worksheet or another piece of paper. I want your spinner to be accurate; make it look good! (this problem is worth 4 points, so put your best effort into it)
I do not currently have a copy of this assignment as I didn't make it and don't yet see how to recreate it in Googledocs. Yes, I know I could take a picture of it and upload that, but hey, I don't have that ability at this moment. So if you did not remember to take your copy ... check back, but I'm not making any promises. ;-)

Assignment: Two Proportion Application Choices
1) MT Page 40 (aka Mid-Test, but it's not a test)
*Use proportions to solve these problems. Label everything! Show your work (no calculators).
2) The Riding Stable
*This worksheet will require you to figure out unit rates for some of these problems; on those problems you will also need to go through more than one step to reach the answers.
*Unit rates, for example, will need to be used on problem E. Figure out for one horse how much it will eat (using a proportion), then apply that to the 6 horses. Ditto for problem E.
*Use proportions to solve these problems. Label everything! Show your work (no calculators).
*This was the tougher of the two worksheets, but totally doable. ;-)

We went over these kinds of proportions in class today and you were all brilliant with them! Do not panic, you do know what to do. Labels will help you organize what you know ... besides that they are required.
*Problems MUST be set up as proportions WITH labels.
*Necessary work must be shown; no calculators may be used.

Welcome back from Spring Break!
Assignment: Proportions #2 - (More Verbal Equations)
We're swinging right back into things and this should feel like review to you. There are two things that are required beyond simply finding the answers to these:
1) You must set up and show these as proportions.
2) You may not use a calculator.
How you solve them after setting up the proportion is your call, but I need to see your work whatever it is. Obviously, if part of the equation is 5 x 6, I know you can do that part in your head. ;-)

Alphabet Probability
Sorry for not getting up yesterday's work. Basically, you have all you need now to complete our work with alphabet probability. There are three pieces to this:
1) Percents
Using the data from your 5 samples, fill in the tables.
2) Observe
Get detailed, be awesome, and share your ideas. We've talked about jumping in and taking chances, risking being wrong, and pushing through the "hard," so do so!
3) Predict
Based on the statistics you have collected, predict the number of letters you will find in one more 100 word selection of your choice. Then answer the final question and you're done!
Recommended Due Date: Friday, April 3
Okay Due Date: Monday, April 13
If you've been absent for these days, our work has been a lot about participation in class that you take home to complete these worksheets. Check with me if you have any questions about what YOU should complete. Thanks!
