Homework for Tuesday, January 22

Assignment:  1 Interview and Explanation
Today's assignment is to find someone who can explain to you why the given equation can or cannot be simplified.  It is also important to note that there may be different opinions out there and this is GOOD!  You can change ANY math problem in some way, but changing it to be even more complex is not necessarily a good thing.  It's why we say, "simplify" ... make it simple and/or solveable.
So ...
1) Show them this equation 1/x + 1/y = ?
2) Ask if it can be simplified or changed in a way that would lead to a solution.
3) Ask them WHY it works or would not work or would be better or would not be better, etc.
Most people who use variables in equations will know what I'm getting at.  If they do not know, feel free to ask someone else!  In other words, keep asking until you are happy with an answer.
4) Make sure that you understand what they are telling you; you need to be able to share their reasoning with your classmates.
5) Write down  who you asked, what their answer was, and their reasoning behind their answer.
This assignment is about the effort you put into exploring this question, not about being right or wrong.  Be willing to think about it!
