Battleship Grid and One Question ... Link!
You are in varying degrees of completion with this assignment, so please be attentive to how this assignment applies for you:
1) Those of you who got the orange stickie note, "You are good to go!"
***Ayla, this includes you.
2) Those of you who got the orange stickie note, "Name your point!"
- both of these groups need to answer the question that was on the back of the grid handed out after class today. You do NOT need to redo your battleship game grid unless you want to. Please staple it on to the new question.
BE SURE TO ANSWER THE QUESTION THOROUGHLY.
The rest of you either did not turn in a battleship grid or did not make your lines on the diagonal, bisecting the boxes.
*Both lines need to follow this bisecting rule (and they are perpendicular ... that's vocabulary!) We went over this in class today.
*Both lines need to be straight.
*Follow the guidelines for coloring.
*Your point needs to be named.
*You will be graded this time on following directions.
You are to redo your battleship grid on the new sheet passed out at the end of class today (link above). It doesn't matter whether you use the same point or not, just be sure the directions are followed accurately! You may refer to the directions posted last week (below) if you need more detail.
BE SURE TO ANSWER THE QUESTION THOROUGHLY.

Assignment: Real Life Negatives C - Link!
We went over this in class today: you MUST write the correct equation in the order it is shown before solving. Your equation MUST be written as an addition problem and it must be solvable in the equation as you write it ... meaning parentheses may or may not be necessary, but should NOT change the solution as per the order of operations.
How you organize it to solve it and having the correct solution are the secondary parts.
Knowing how to set up an equation from verbal (written) information is super important!

Assignment: Negative Addition Choice #1
Today you get to select your assignment based on how comfortable you feel seeing negatives in addition equations.
For example, perhaps you see a red 8 and a black 5 and have no trouble thinking of that as a -8 added to a +5, or even of knowing the answer is -3.
However ...
Do you recognize that as the equation -8 + 5 = -3 ??
So here are your homework choices:
*B = Basics - Link!
These equations are pretty new to me and I am most comfortable just solving these simpler ones I can typically do in my head.
*G = Feeling Good - Link!
These equations may or may not be new to me, but I am feeling pretty good about them and want to try some equations that I may have to solve on paper. I would like some numbers over 13 to work with!
*C = Challenge - Link!
I totally get this. Let me work with decimals and more than two numbers in an equation ... this concept is well-within my wheelhouse and I am ready to go for it!
Yes, as always you can switch worksheets if you are unhappy with the choice you made in class today.

There is kind of a lot here ... please be patient and read through these directions if you are feeling stuck. Please wait and ask me tomorrow if you are still stuck ... there is always the weekend to catch back up. ;-)
#1) Battleship Game Board - Link!
Today you are to create your answer key for the Battleship game.
1) Plot any point using the 12 x 12 graph you received in class. Record that point.
2) Draw the diagonal lines that MUST bisect the corners of each box, meaning that they radiate from the points at 45-degree angles. These lines must be drawn straight, be accurate, and be in pencil or black pen.
3) Color the sections according to the key we will all be using: Blue = north, Green = east, Yellow = south, Red = west. You should have this key from the notes we took today.
You will be graded on the accuracy of your point, lines, and key.

The intention of this homework is not to “know” the answers, but to discover them. You may find this frustrating, so hang in there and think of it as a puzzle or a mystery you are trying to solve. Try it, try something else, explore!
Have a coordinate plane and use it to explore the questions … draw on it! Test your ideas!
Any graph paper will work; just draw and label the grid yourself placing (0,0) in the center.
If you do not have graph paper, you can print a copy HERE.

Assignment: Real Life Negatives B - Link!
Same as last week, your task is to make sense of the problem and solve for the question. We're still not concerned with what it looks like in an equation, but we have practiced a lot of visual thinking lately. We will be seeing equations on worksheets soon ... don't rush it!
*When you get to the mean, range, and median questions (#5) use what you know about these terms to answer the question. Use the given VALUES ... . think of number lines and what the numbers represent, then what value the answer would have. Draw yourself a picture if you need to; you do have the tools to solve these, but you need to use them!
Be sure to write all of your work on the paper so I can see how you are solving them.
Calculators are not allowed; I'm hoping that goes unsaid. ;-)

Assignment: Sodas ws - Link!
Yes, it's another adventure in graph reading!
REAL graph reading. ;-)
Remember that the "tricky" part of this worksheet is thinking about how the bar graph represents actual DATA. We've collected random chaos, made organized lists, and figured the central tendencies from that data. Now you need to convert the graph (whether in your head or on paper) back to the collection of data in order to determine those again. Don't think like the kindergartner you, think like the growing mathematical you!
*I recommend drawing clear, straight lines on the graph. Use a ruler!
*You are not required to convert the graphs back into data on paper, but you do need to think about what that data would look like as a list. hint hint hint!
*When asked to explain how you got your answer, write an answer! The key is to see how you think mathematically ... that is actually the challenge of this assignment.

Assignment: Real Life Negatives - A ... Link!
Welcome to the "real" world (as real as it gets in these examples) of negative integers. Today you are to focus on what you are doing not how you write it.
Mo's advice:
*Think about what the numbers represent. Draw pictures on the page or in your mind, but use your imagination to think about the story behind the question.
*Associate! These numbers all have values that go in a direction: towards zero or away from zero. So if you go down the steps at Hogwarts, all of those downward steps represent going DOWN (aka a negative number, fyi) and all of the times you go UP get you higher (a positive direction). Again, picture the story.
*HOW you solve these problems should be common sense. I'm not at all concerned how you represent it mathematically, I want to know where you end up: behind the starting point? above sea level? above zero? with less money? How can you collect (commute and associate) the values of the numbers and use them to come up with an answer?
Think about what you know to be true and then figure out how to get to that point.
EXAMPLES: each with different answers, yet essentially the same numbers ...
A) If your horse is 7 miles away from Olympia, and runs for 5 miles towards Olympia, rests, then runs 4 more miles in the same direction, he ends up 2 miles PAST Olympia, right? Right!
B) If your horse is 7 miles away from Olympia, and begins running to Olympia for 5 miles, but realized he forgot his baby horse, so he runs back for 4 miles, he is now 6 miles away from (before) Olympia, right? Try drawing that scenario.
*The rest of it is up to you. I strongly, strongly recommend drawing yourself a simple scenario and figuring out what it is you want to know. Don't worry about the negatives or positives, just think about what they represent in the story. I keep saying this because it is key to your "aha" moment!
*And yes, labels are VERY important ... you MUST label your answers (either with words or a negative sign) to get full credit.
Due Wednesday - try to enjoy it. ;-)

Homework for Monday, December 2
Welcome Back!
Please remember that you will see Coffee Prices Part 1 in Monday's grade slot for this trimester.
Assignment: Coffee Prices Part 2 - Link!
You will notice some similarities and some differences between this worksheet and Coffee Prices Part 1. The main difference, of course, is that this table gives you the amount of the increase or decrease, NOT the price of the coffee per pound. You will have to figure out the actual price each month to graph.
*This is an accumulative total; do not go back to the original $3.10 every time, keep building on (or taking away from) the price each month.
*It is indeed safe to start your graph at $3.10. Although you will be adding and subtracting values, the price of coffee will never dip below $3.10.
*You do not "need" to draw in the mean line, but you will draw the line of best fit, The line of best fit represents how YOU think of it, not the fancy algorithmic value. You may draw in the mean line if you want to compare the two though. ;-)
Get used to thinking about those negative values and how they work in the big picture ... the concept is much easier than the equations themselves, but the better you understand how they work, the easier they will be.
PLEASE USE A RULER TO MAKE YOUR LINES.

Homework: LAST new math assignment for the fall ...
Assignment: Coffee Prices - Link!
We talked about challenges today and this assignment might feel challenging to you. It also might feel straight-forward ... I expect both of these experiences to be real. ;-)
*You need to use the table for the information to put into the grid.
*YOU need to make the scale (how much is one box worth?) and label the graph appropriately.
Would it be easier if I gave you the scale? You betcha! But you can do it. Make it a good scale that allows you to graph the points and emphasize the trends that are happening.
- Hint: Your scale does NOT need to be in dollar or 25 cent increments ... be creative!
- Hint: A trend is something that happens for a period of time, usually an extended period of time.
*Answer the questions based upon your observations.
*Do the arithmetic when you need to!
Due Thursday
Reminder: You can, and possibly should, elaborate on your answers for the Math Survey. This assignment is not due until Friday, which I did purposefully so you wouldn't feel the need to rush through it. It is graded on giving me full answers to the questions, eh? Thank you! I do care a LOT about what you think. 😄

Assignment: Paper Airplane Questions - Link!
This is an exercise in sharing what you know based upon what you see. We did this in class even before you knew what a box plot was, so now it should eat like a piece of cake, right?
First: you must have your box plot (and scatter plot) with you to answer these questions.
*Do not use your data sheet
*Approximates are great ... in fact, that's what we are practicing using.
*Now you may also see why having clearly marked lines and points is helpful!
Second: You may hand write or type your answers, but whatever you do BE THOROUGH.
*BE CONVINCING.
*DEFEND YOUR CHOICES!
*Your grade lies with the math choices you make and how (and if) you defend them with math.
Use your notes regarding the central tendencies if you've forgotten what they are.
*Be sure to calculate your mean (using a calculator) and the median and mode and write them onto your box plot sheet.
Have any questions? Push through this! You know more than you think ... just explain yourself. ;-)
Due Thursday
*Dear Mia, Michael, and Zellaby, it will be close to impossible for you to complete this assignment at this time because not only do you not have your data with you, you were not here when we learned how to create boxplots. So rest well tonight and we can go over it quickly during an upcoming CWP.

Assignment: Order of Ops Choice
The test on the order of operations will be next Wednesday, November 13. Today you were to select a homework option that helped you to know how prepared for the test you feel ... hopefully well prepared!
Be sure to carefully write out your steps and think about how the order of operations work. There is a link on the Mo'Help tab of this blog that can help remind you if you've since forgotten ... but we will also review these over the course of the next week.
*The order of operations are a CRITICAL piece of mathematical language and you need to master them now. Mr. Jeff says that not knowing the order of operations is like trying to read without vowels ... it just doesn't make sense. So let's go!
The choices are listed below; feel free to switch assignments if you don't like the one you selected.
Order of Ops - Test Level - Link! Want to take a gander at the test with different numbers? This assignment is for you. Oh ... and the equations will vary too, but not in difficulty.

Create a paper airplane
This is an effort based grade based upon:
*you must use a full, single sheet of 8 1/2 x 11 copy paper. It can definitely be colored, but it cannot be "construction" paper.
*you may cut your plane to make flaps.
*you may not add anything else to your plane, including weights.
*you may use clear Scotch tape or glue only, but not so much that it serves as extra weight.
*you may not use any other kind of tape.
*you should decorate your plane, including your name.
*you should spend more than 4 minutes creating your plane and it should look like you did. Look on the internet, ask someone, test it out. This IS your plane for the duration of this unit, so do a good job of it.
*you should not build your plane in carpool because it won't be "effortful" enough ... and I know what effort looks like.
When you bring your plane to school, please park your plane in your room #1 airplane hangar so that it doesn't get squished or bent in any way.
-Please do not fly them in the classroom or the hallways.
-Respect all planes; do not touch or mess with anyone else's plane.
THANKS! Fasten your seatbelts and prepare for flight.

Homework for Monday, October 28
Assignment: Definitions of ...
Today you received a slip of paper with one of the measures of central tendencies written at the top: mean, median, or mode. There is also a number set on the page: 2, 2, 5, 11, and 20.
Your assignment is to -
1) Interview three people. Parents, neighbors, and friends that do not go to NOVA are all legitimate. You may not interview Mr. Gacek, T-Mac, or Mo.
2) Ask them the definition of the word on your paper and write their name and definition down on it. Do NOT correct their definitions, just write what they say. If they have an answer to the given number set, include that as well.
3) Finish with your definition of your word and what you believe the numerical answer to be from the given set.
*Be sure you have identified each of the people you interviewed and written your name on your paper!
*Reminder - you are not graded on having the correct definitions, you are scored for completing this assignment as per the directions.

Homework (?!?) for Friday, October 25
Assignment: Test Corrections
Your test correction form was attached to your test and many of you were able to make the test corrections before the end of the day. That means all you might have remaining is to get your parent/guardian signature this weekend. Cool!
All of the instructions and details are on the assignment sheet. Please read it thoroughly!
This assignment is extremely important in learning about how well you know or don't know decimals and how well or not well you prepare for math tests.
It is also about now finding your OWN mistakes and learning the material. For those of you still struggling with addition, multiplication, or any of the other operations you NEED to study and learn those skills. Please do not brush them aside because they will be in every math class you have for the rest of your schooling days ... and you need to understand what you are doing.

Task for Thursday night, October 24
Hello math students!
This is just a reminder to check your math test score in TeacherEase so it is not a surprise to you on Friday morning. I don't mean to sound ominous, but it is indeed nice to know how you did rather than be stressed all night about your results ... so go there!
Mo ;-)

Assignment: Kyle's Problem - Link!
*Write one problem that Kyle (actually, your classmates) need to solve.
*All of the directions are on the sheet and the link is listed above!
Due Tuesday
Assignment: Note to Mo ;-)
Answer these three questions on Wednesday evening, prior to Thursday's decimal test:
1) How did you prepare for the test?
(Quizlet, worksheets, old assignments, whatever!)
2) How much did you prepare for the test?
(5 minutes per night, 10 minutes for two nights, crammed for 30 minutes on Wednesday, etc!)
3) How prepared do you feel for the test?
(hopefully you feel 100% prepared, eh?)
You may type or write your responses to these questions.
Late "Notes" will NOT be accepted for credit. The purpose of this assignment is to get you thinking about the test PRIOR to the event, not afterwards.

As a summarized review:
*Go to Mo's Olympia NOVA School page in your Quizlet account.
*Alphabetize the list of sets
*Select whichever of Mo's sets beginning with "Decimal" that you feel you need the most practice in.
*Select "Write" mode to study.
*Do all of your work on scratch paper, typing only the answer into Quizlet.
*Once you have answered 8 problems correctly, you may stop! You are also welcome to continue if you want to complete the set for funzies.
To Turn this Assignment in you have 3 options:
1) Hand in your scratch sheet including the title of the set you studied and your name!
2) Send me a screen shot of your completed "8 correct" via email.
3) Have your parent indicate you have completed this homework and sign a note including your name and the name of your set on it.

Assignment: Kyle - B - Link!
We didn't have much time to go over the Kyle A worksheet handed back to you today, but please notice the notes I wrote on your papers. Was your error a misunderstanding of the question or did you make an arithmetic error?
These application problems are supposed to be more difficult, forcing you to analyze the given information and figure out what is happening for Kyle in each situation. Kyle never simply counts hamburgers on the countertop, his life is complicated!
Don't let him get you stuck, ask someone if you need help interpreting his problem. But as usual, no calculators may be used in the solving of these problems and all work must be handed in.
Due Tuesday
The link to the Quiz Bowl Questions due Friday is in the "upcoming dates" column on the right.

The object of this assignment is to self-evaluate where you are with your decimal skills: are any of these operations difficult? do you need more practice multiplying? is subtracting tricky?
The next time you select a practice decimal assignment, this will be your guide.
*No calculators!
*Show me your work!
*Take note of where/if you get stuck
*Be confident in what you know.
Due Monday
Once I get these corrected, we will set the decimal test date together. ;-)

Assignment: Kyle A - Link!
Welcome to Kyle's world! Many of you will get frustrated with Kyle, but know that he is here to help you make sense of decimals. You may NOT use a calculator for these problems. While it might be painful, you'll be mathematically stronger because of him. ;-)
Kyle hints:
*Kyle does not live where he works.
*Kyle works a set number of hours per day, but not every day of the week.
*Kyle is an avid bike rider.
*Bus tickets are one-way only.
*Kyle changes employment often ... hence everything will change.
Take your time solving Kyle's problems. Are you using the correct operations? Is your arithmetic correct? Does your answer make sense?

Assignment: The Best Bargains - Link!
This two-sided worksheet uses line graphs in a different way than the Shoe Sales and Cockroaches graphs. We went over it in class ... did you take good notes? Here are some reminders ...
*Both graphs need keys that you create.
*Both graphs need labels along the bottom and the side, with numbers indicating the scale.
*The Shampoo graph uses the prices in the top paragraph to set the points and then the lines are drawn for you. The food graph needs you to use the chart to plot the points and create the lines.
*Lines should be STRAIGHT.
*Use a ruler or straight edge to see where the intersections are. You don't need to be exact, but you should be able to be darn close.
*When finding the prices, use the graphs, NOT proportional problem solving ... that comes later.
Right now we are simply practicing creating and reading graphs accurately. Think about what makes a graph easier to read than a table and why people use graphs to represent their data. You saw what happen when someone like Mo creates a line graph that is difficult to read ... so make yours awesome!

This work is to show that you understand a) how to plot a line graph from data and b) explain what you see in that graph. Your group graph is about teamwork, but this is all you. ;-)
There is also room to talk about how teamwork is going for you, specifically your team, but here you can speak to what works and what does not work for you. So elaborate!
If you have questions, please see me in room #1 at break tomorrow or during the CWP.

Assignment: Order of Ops! (Mo's Choice)
Yes, I selected your homework tonight based upon my expert analysis of your pre-quiz. I studied the kinds of mistakes you made and read your comments ... did you need help? Were you confident? Etc.
So if you misplaced your assignment, you aren't really going to know which one I assigned you unless either a) you remember or b) you email me. However, I will be at Ella's soccer game until around 7:30, so you won't get a response until later ... just keep that in mind.
These assignments are listed in what I feel is the order of difficulty.
If you feel the assignment is too difficult, please select one from the assignments listed above yours in the list. If you feel it is too simple, you must do it anyway (it may be review, but you missed them on the pre-quiz!) then when it's your turn to choose you can try whatever you feel like.
So here they are:

Assignment: The Ups and Downs of Shopping - Link!
The directions are on this assignment, but here is my advice:
1) Draw yourself a picture
2) Think about the word clues they are giving you. They do matter.
3) Work back through your solution by reading the story again to make sure that your answer works with the information.
4) Think about reading it to another family member and showing them how your "proof" works. It's fine!
Your proof, or work on the page, is worth up to 2 points, so make it good! I need to be able to follow your thinking without you there to explain it to me.
The answer itself is worth one point if correct. There IS an answer meaning you DO have enough information to answer how many floors the department store has.

Are you confused yet? Clearly Kyle is confused and needs your help figuring out this strange monetary system.
HINT: it is NOT our monetary system and does not match up with our coins, so figure out how to organize your money and THEN solve the problems. Zoe had a great idea of creating a table, but how you organize it is up to you as you are the one who has to make "cents" of it, eh?!?

Assignment: Pre-Quiz Operations
This is not a test, I repeat, this is not a test.
This is a pre-quiz to assess how well you know your order of operations!
*Try every problem. Either guess or seek help, but do something. It is important that I see where you are in this process.
*Remark on every problem. You can say something like, "I had a lot of help with this one," to "I had no idea what to do," to "thumbs down." Future assignments will be based upon your successes on this worksheet, so it is important to acknowledge your strengths and weaknesses.
*I will grade this assignment as complete, partially complete, or incomplete ... hopefully these are self-explanatory. 😄
Due WEDNESDAY for full credit.
*Late papers will receive only partial credit.

(the titles of the various assignments are the links)
Today you have a choice of 3 assignments. Remember that you owe me one, but may do all three if you would like!
R - Division Practice - This worksheet is for those who would like more practice in long division with remainders before venturing into the world of decimals.
D - Dividing by Single & Two Digits - This worksheet is for those who would like to try converting their answers into decimals or would just appreciate practicing on possibly rusty skills.
W - Dividing by Whole Numbers - This worksheet is for those confident in their long division with decimals. Note that this worksheet contains both division that results in a decimal answer AND some begin with decimal dividends!
There is a link on the Mo'Help tab of this blog that gives further instruction in long division.

*ALL work must be shown on the worksheet or another sheet of paper as that is the point of this assignment. The important thing is that I see how you are thinking! ;-)
*Answers may be in the form of decimals, fractions, or with remainders. Your choice!
*If you are using decimals, please stop calculating after three decimal digit places.
B) Basics - Link! - this option gives you basic practice in division with dividing by single digits.
M) Mixed - Link! - this option has division with a little of both: single digit and double digits; for those wanting to venture just a bit.
T) Two Digit - Link! - this option is dividing by double digits; same steps with more challenging numbers and those with remainders, decimals ...
You must complete one of the above options, but any one will do. Thank you!

Summer ...
Greetings! I hope you are all having a fabulous summer whether relaxing, traveling, reading, river rafting, or whatever you enjoy doing. We are home, mostly gardening to get our yard back up to speed after the road construction last year and relaxing as we're able.
As my previous students know, it is always "important" to know my current chicken situation. This summer we attempted to hatch a clutch of eggs and only got one! Her name is Chilly. So we went and picked out 8 friends for her: Francis (see right), Finn, and Felix (our Frizzle chicks), Yeti and Comet (Silkies), and Doc, Sleepy, and Wolf (Polish). No idea yet which are roosters, but Doc is by far the bossiest, so we will see.
Take care!

Assignment: Math?
You are to respond to two questions today regarding our activity "producing" and "selling" colored blocks. As usual, I am looking at the depth of your thinking, so focus on sharing your thoughts not on being "right."
And hey, you can always ask the opinion of a wise elder!
1) How many workers do you think is the ideal number of workers for this activity and WHY? How many workers do you think your team should hire next time?
2) When negotiating for changes in the guidelines (costs, etc.) for this activity, what do you think the class should focus on negotiating for? WHY? What changes do you think will have the biggest impact, but also, which choices do you believe are the fairest for all parties?

Homework for Tuesday, May 28
Create a paper airplane
This is an effort based grade based upon:
*you must use a full, single sheet of 8 1/2 x 11 copy paper. It can definitely be colored, but it cannot be "construction" paper. I do have paper for you if you need, but first check on the back table of room one.
Due for Inspection: Wednesday
